AIBU to ask them to play anything but jazz?

Light-hearted. I'm in an airport lounge. It's a newly opened one. Not very busy, only 4-5 other tables being used.

They are piping music into the place and it's proper squealing jazz, with wailing out of time saxophones and pianos that sound like they're being played by a toddler and a chimp simultaneously. It's utter noise!

Shall I ask them to change the record? 😂

I went to the loos after 45 and thought I'd get respite. Nope it's piped into there too, I can't even have a piss in peace.

How does anyone enjoy jazz? It's lost on me.

I'm kind of the same with disco music. A lot of it really is brilliant but when it's played all night it sooner or later drives me up the wall. A couple of times in my relative youth I went to Flares with friends and eventually just had to get out because I couldn't stand it any longer. I've no idea why.

The problem is that most jazz really does not work as background music. It needs attention . I find it quite tiring to listen to and very very very distracting and intrusive as background music. I imagine it is wonderful to play in a talented, improvisational jazz band but you need to get through a barrier to enjoy listening to it I think. I have never really enjoyed most jazz. Light jazz that you can dance to is fine but most of the other stuff I am not keen on listening to. It makes me feel on edge.

I was once stuck overnight in a Jetblue airport lounge and they played jazz. I actually tweeted them begging them to stop.

I love jazz, including the squeaky discordant frenetic kind. And even I agree it is not suitable as piped Muzak.

@21Shakennotshook Luton.

So, I did end up mentioning it to the staff in the end, I joked to the girl "Do you have to listen to this awful music all day, or do head office let you play something else?!" She replied that they had to play jazz and she too hated it, but had zoned it out... until I mentioned it. 😂

She said she would turn it down for me, she kindly turned it right down too. Was bloody lovely!

To PPs saying you can't hate a whole genre of music. I think you can. Although I do concede that I like Ella Fitzgerald, Amy Winehouse, Billie Holliday etc. But I don't know what sub-genres of jazz they're classed as, hence just putting jazz in my OP. It's the mental squealing saxophone / trumpets and out of tune piano jazz where you can't tell where one song ends and another starts that I can't bear.

Anyway, we made it to the Algarve. Not a jazz club in site. Woo hoo.
