Mums of baby boys (Autumn wardrobe)

Basil90 · 22/09/2019 15:07

Am I being unreasonable to think that baby boys' clothes everywhere are dark and drab? I've looked over the weekend in Next, Matalan and some supermarkets and have been left feeling so uninspired. The new season Autumnal clothes in particular all seem to be navy, grey or dark green and a lot of them are ruined further by garish slogans.

Granted I'm very fussy but girls' clothes in comparison are so lovely and colourful and look as though time and thought have been put into their design.

If anyone is able and willing to point me in the direction of some classic baby boy outfits (preferably with a splash of colour) please point me in their direction!

Thanks Smile

My son is dressed exclusively in white, grey and navy as I cannot seem to find anything else. The colourful things either had stupid pictures of diggers and dinosaurs or awful babyish sayings like 'big boy/I'm cute/I love cars/here comes trouble' Envy

I find primark and River island really good for boys clothes, normal plain designs with nice prints and they are smart. I'm really not a fan of childish/babyish clothes, much rather trousers and a shirt with brogues.

FASDE1517 · 22/09/2019 17:39

Another vote for sainsburys.

Catra · 22/09/2019 17:40

Duns, Frugi, Little Green Radicals, Tootsa MacGinty.

Spam88 · 22/09/2019 17:44

Boots normally have some colourful stuff as well.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 22/09/2019 17:50

H&M and Sainsbury's for non brown colours.

I've always found boys clothes to be dull. I have two older boys and was excited for clothes when I had my daughter!

I try to get bits by Little Bird, Little Green Radicals, Frugi, Maxomorra, Duns, Pyret o Polarn, Lollidays, or Boden.
H&M and Zara are good too. John Lewis and M&S. If you hunt TK Maxx sometimes you'll find some good bits.

99problemsandjust1appt · 22/09/2019 17:51

I just buy some girls bits but BEWARE the girls sizes despite saying the same size are about a size SMALLER ! I had to send so much back and get it in the size up

99problemsandjust1appt · 22/09/2019 17:52

We love bright leggings Asda do lots but in boys trousers he’s currently 12-18 moths in girls leggings we have to buy 2-3 years (tried 1.5-2 and too small !!!)

Stickybeaksid · 22/09/2019 17:53

Zara have lovely stuff at the moment. All bright colours

Stickybeaksid · 22/09/2019 17:53

Also try the website we are kidly. They do great leggings and tops

WhyBirdStop · 22/09/2019 17:55

I'm fussy too OP, it's not just the drab colours I can't stand slogans or TV characters , and I don't see why my son has to wear trucks/cars all of the time, dinosaurs are prolific too but at least he actually likes dinosaurs (favourite toy). JoJo have got some nice bits, frugi, Kite I've been buying winter things in the summer sales.
A lot of the time I also look in the girls' section, I don't see why my son can't wear bright yellow or rainbow stripes. I actually got some nice leggings in Tesco the other day, one mustard pair with a white stripe and a navy pair with white lightning bolts. I find it's bits from here and there rather than being able to walk into one or two shops and get everything. H&M online have a much wider range than in store and the returns are easy.

theluckiest · 22/09/2019 17:56

If you think the little boy stuff is boring and drab, wait until they get a bit older!!

My two are in a hideous limbo of nearly teen- not quite adult. Clothes are all without question, sludge coloured and even worse, there's practically nothing for age 12 - 16.

Apart from sports wear, not quite sure where young teen boys are meant to shop until they're big enough for adult clothing.

I think someone's missing a trick here Grin

WhyBirdStop · 22/09/2019 17:56

I got some nice bright, pain colour body suits in John Lewis that can brighten outfits up a bit too, vertbaudet and la Redoute are good too

Neveam · 22/09/2019 18:13

Polarn o Pyret*
I find it hard to find boys clothes without cars, dinosaurs, diggers or monsters on.
But in the girls section there's always unicorns, fairies or tacky glitter.
I stay away from all that!
Many tops are ruined with stupid slogans like "rad like dad" or "here comes trouble". Girls get "little sweetie" or "perfect princess". Not to my taste at all! However there are dinosaurs on dresses now so there's a start.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 22/09/2019 18:56

I've bought some nice bits for DS from Sainsbury's recently. I also like their clothes for DD (5) as it's one of the few places where the girls clothing isle isn't just a sea of pink.

BertieBotts · 22/09/2019 18:59

What age/size? I love children's clothes shopping! Bright boys stuff which isn't bank breaking like frugi is my special trick...

WineIsMyCarb · 22/09/2019 19:09

I have girls but often look in the boys' dept for good quality basics. So consider looking in girls section for long sleeve t shirts in pastel colours. Also google search 'Spanish boys clothing' and you'll find lovely traditional stuff. Also maybe search for some specific items that will make up your lovely LB's 'winter wardrobe' like a really nice cable knit jumper, some polo shirts, etc.
If they are babies/toddlers then leggings are on aren't they? Buy the 'girls' navy leggings (we have about 500 pairs) and cover any lacy bit at the bottom with socks, or turn them up slightly (even my sewing skills extend to that!).
Mothercare has lovely baby boys stuff too IME.

Basil90 · 22/09/2019 21:18

Thanks all so much for your replies, very much appreciated.

Baby's in bed (he's 3 1/2 months for those asking), so I've settled down with a glass of wine to peruse your suggestions. There are a number of sites mentioned that I haven't come across before so will take a look at these as a starting point.

I also love the suggestion of looking in girls' clothing sections for some colourful basics - no idea why I haven't thought of this myself!

As some have said, there definitely does appear to be a gap in the market when it comes to boys' clothing. Perhaps we could all club together and set up our own mumsnet boys brand and make our millions Wink

Tesco, h&m, debenhams, Mark's and Spencer's although my 19 mo is just going into age 3-4 clothes so no baby clothes for us anymore. Next have some nice clothes in the boys section rather than the baby section, sizes start from about 3 months I think

user1471592953 · 22/09/2019 22:28

Another one is Newbie (also Scandinavia).

BertieBotts · 22/09/2019 22:30

Oh, I saw some lovely boys' things in Sainsbury's the other day and I was gutted they were too small for my 1yo :o

This set looks dull on site but the colours are gorgeous in real life. I got the sleepsuit set instead but I wish I'd seen the pyjamas.

Ooops Blush That didn't seem like so many while I was making it.

Actaea · 22/09/2019 22:33

I buy cheap basics from H&M and Next then add bits from Scandi brands and Etsy. For example instagram.com/raisinglittlewilf is the style of clothes I aim for.

Nelly325 · 22/09/2019 22:36

I really like nutmeg at Morrisons :) lots of cheerful but not shouty boys clothes

user1493494961 · 22/09/2019 22:41

I thought it was a Mumsnet rule that you have to dress your child in babygros until they're one.
