AIBU Greta Thunberg?

onalongsabbatical · 22/09/2019 10:34

AIBU to ask everyone who can to get behind Greta Thunberg, even if only online, as she's now getting a lot a lot a lot of hate. She clearly threatens people - especially her polar opposites, men, rich old men, powerful men (did I mention men?). Let's all give her the lurve and support she needs.
So on FB I challenged one just now - Why are you attacking a young woman? - and he disappeared. Funny, that.

What exactly did she say?

Absolutely bloody nothing.

It is incredibly embarrassing the way adults are allowing her to lecture them in this way.

Trewser · 24/09/2019 09:32

More words. Noone has any clue how to stop climate change.

Jillyhilly · 24/09/2019 09:33

Oh @Tensixtysix I love that JP clip. Now there’s a man who understands nuance and complexity. Such an absurd, pretentious, windy balloon of a question and he punctures it with such skill!

conderellainyellakissedafella · 24/09/2019 09:34

I admire her passion but her speech to the UN was immature and embarrassing. Just like a speech a child would give. I know she is a child but when addressing world leaders it needs to leave a profound impact. Hers didn't.

conderellainyellakissedafella · 24/09/2019 09:37

Personally I don't think she is old enough or has enough life experience to address the UN. Her speech was a lot of destroying her childhood and dreams etc and then to make a complaint on the rights of the child about how France, Germany and a few others at destroying the planet was quite GrinHmm

I think the UN are making a fool of a vulnerable 16 year old girl with special
Needs.my own dc has autism too.

Bluntness100 · 24/09/2019 09:39

I also found her speech difficult to watch, and feel she should have been helped in the writing of it. We can not expect an adult level of calm, and talking in that environment would scare the shit out of most people, not least a 16 year old girl with Aspergers.

I'm honestly not sure it was a wise decision to put her up there. There were ways she could get her message across using other platforms. More one to one interviews. I'm not sure her speech helped her to be honest, which is a terrible shame.

dirtyrottenscoundrel · 24/09/2019 09:39

They can’t stop her really, but I imagine most politicians are sitting there rolling their eyes.
Can’t see China taking much notice of her.

Solitarycaddis · 24/09/2019 09:42

The point is that she has done a very good job of highlighting the urgency of these issues and galvanising support of young people across the world, but it's now up to world leaders to take up the challenge and act. Gutterre gave a very good speech which hasn't been as widely broadcast.

Jillyhilly · 24/09/2019 09:43

Do they have to invite her? It’s all a massive virtue-signalling tactic I guess. It was just so cringeworthy.

Italiangreyhound · 24/09/2019 09:45

We do know what to do to save our planet. It's just world leaders are not willing to do it and we cannot hold them to account because we are generally too lazy.

Greta may be passionate and young (good things actually) but she is also correct in her assessment. I expect she will be alive long after us, so it is out children's future being stolen.

How trendy!!

Italiangreyhound · 24/09/2019 09:46

Is it only cringe worthy because we do not people to speak truth on such situations?

conderellainyellakissedafella · 24/09/2019 09:50

My niece wanted to attend a climate change protest instead of school. Her mum and dad said no because these protests are trendy now and what good can people do by holding up pieces of cardboard in a town square and screaming at the top of their lungs?? Also as dad put it 'uni won't care why you were off school, just about your attendance. ( not a uk based family)

MarshaBradyo · 24/09/2019 09:53

She gets coverage and cut through

How many well-intentioned speeches on this topic are just background noise. People don’t even listen.

Millions have done something off the back of her initial strike. Yes aided by media. Still started by her.

So people cringe and find her uncomfortable. Too emotional. She’s getting world press though.

Others can pick up other areas she doesn’t have to do everything.

Teacher22 · 24/09/2019 09:59

Thank you, Jillyhilly. Nice to know there are some other rational people out there who are capable of thought as well as extreme emotions.

Jillyhilly · 24/09/2019 10:00

I expect she will be alive long after us

I doubt it. We only have [12 / 11 / 8 / delete as appropriate depending on level of drama required] years to save the planet, then it’s curtains for the lot of us!

Pomegranatepompom · 24/09/2019 10:00

Has she changed anything you do Marsha? Will you think twice about flying for example? About anything you buy ?

It’s a hard balance isn’t it, I love an overseas holiday but I do try and limit air travel now.

BeardedMum · 24/09/2019 10:01

The problem is that extreme emotions and actions are needed now to try to avoid extreme impact to our future generations quality of life on this earth.

MarshaBradyo · 24/09/2019 10:03

Yep Pomegranate but interestingly it’s coming from my teen. Like a pp he is asking we make changes. To the usual stuff like not flying, driving and bottles. Better than nothing. I really like his straight approach and it’s making me rethink my consumer habits,

dirtyrottenscoundrel · 24/09/2019 10:03

Greenpeace have been saying what she’s saying for as long as I can remember!
She’s not saying anything new.
Has much changed since we started ‘going green’ over 30 years ago?

MarshaBradyo · 24/09/2019 10:05

I saw in a thread on here about people realising. And I feel like the consumerism is out of control so I’m dialling it back.

There’s so many forces making us spend it takes an interruption to halt it.

MarshaBradyo · 24/09/2019 10:05

She gets wider coverage than Greenpeace. And has a bigger target audience.

The issues are now more mainstream.

StarGOLD · 24/09/2019 10:09

I am worried about her mental state and think she is not being supported appropriately by the adults around her. That speech yesterday was disturbing, not in its content but the way she delivered it..she is a young woman unravelling in the public eye. She's right about one thing, she should be in school and having fun with her friends not taking the worlds problems on her young shoulders seemingly single handed.

We are all doing our bit to help sustain our planet.

Pomegranatepompom · 24/09/2019 10:10

I absolutely agree about consumerism and I’ve also tried to stop buying - didn’t buy any clothes over summer. We took DC to the Eden project and they had good environmental theme, which really helped DC understand. That visit did more than GT lectures imo but she obviously does speak to some people !

malificent7 · 24/09/2019 10:14

We do need extremists though to push foward new 'normals'. So maybe tecbologies will xhange. I hardly use plastic bags now compared to 10 years ago. Why? Because so called 'extremists' put sad pictures of turtles on posters strangled with plastic debris and i saw Blue Planet. This stuff has an effect on consumers.
