AIBU to expect people to RTFT before posting?

Seriously - why would you put a comment on a thread before reading to the end? I’ve waded through a few threads lately where posters have written stuff that has already been addressed by the OP in subsequent comments, because they haven’t RTFT. At the very least, scroll through at read updates by the OP before posting. Life is too short to wade through the drivel.

OP posts:
IfIWasTheMan · 21/09/2019 11:16

Haven’t RTFT but YABU.

Such a non-issue. If you were that upset you’d leave mumsnet. Wink

Hopesorfears · 21/09/2019 11:16

Well I think you've answered your own question in your last sentence!

Likethebattle · 21/09/2019 11:18

Trap pretty irrelevant stuff or usually answered in the op ‘we have been married 5 years and have 2 children, a bright spark then says ‘are you married?’ YES it’s in the OP!

00100001 · 21/09/2019 11:18

Cancel the cheque

MrsMaiselsMuff · 21/09/2019 11:19

Life is too short to wade through the drivel.

Erm...

ariamontgomery · 21/09/2019 11:20

YABU. I can’t be bothered to read pages and pages but sometimes I fancy having my say because I’m nosey and interfering 🤷‍♀️

bridgetreilly · 21/09/2019 11:20

Life is too short to wade through the drivel.

Well, that's why.

Likethebattle · 21/09/2019 11:35

Highjlight the ops posts then you can skim through them .

Toastymash · 21/09/2019 11:36

YABU

MrsFogi · 21/09/2019 11:38

YABU - life is too short to RTFT.

donquixotedelamancha · 21/09/2019 11:39

NRTFT, but has anyone mentioned that if you were really bothered you would leave MN?

Also you can highlight OPs posts in settings.

MrsFogi · 21/09/2019 11:39

I think MN needs to sort out the functionality of the site so that posts on the thread by the OP come up in an entirely different colour so that it is easy for people to scroll through and read all the OP's posts (that would be particularly great on some of the threads that end up becoming absolute classics).

TheMustressMhor · 21/09/2019 11:40

Life is definitely too short to RTFT when it's reached 687 messages.

GoFiguire · 21/09/2019 11:41

Haven’t RTFT so I have no idea what you’re talking about, but didn’t want to read and go.

TheMustressMhor · 21/09/2019 11:41

MrsFogi do you live in a parallel universe or something?

The OP's posts are in a different colour.

C0untDucku1a · 21/09/2019 11:42

What annoys me more is the patronising, ‘i can’t understand a word you are saying’ or ‘this is so badly written, I cannot work it out.’

I always thought the general population was quite educated: No text speak abbreviations, few spelling errors, good use of punctuation etc. Mumsnetters pride themselves on not being the huns. Yet when someone posts who is clearly very emotional and just writing what they are thinking, there is always some ignorant jackass who says they just cannot possibly understand the posts due to the lack of paragraphs. Do those people not realise that makes them look like a dick and also a bit thick, and it does not make them look smarter than the op, which is what they were clearly trying to do.

SmellbowSmellbow123 · 21/09/2019 11:43

When there’s 28/29/30 pages of comments, people do not have time to RTFT because it’s long winded!

SuitedandBooted · 21/09/2019 11:46

I agree with you about reading the OP's updates.

It's really tedious when people constantly raise points the OP has already addressed, sometimes in the opening post!

Leftielefterson · 21/09/2019 11:50

Because I don’t always have the time to read 998 posts?!

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 21/09/2019 11:54

There have been a number of threads over the years where fairly minor sounding health problems have been diagnosed as something much more serious during the course of the thread.

You still get the “haven’t RTFT but stop being a snowflake and take some vit C posts” a page after the OP has posted they are on the cancer diagnosis pathway.

You can highlight the OP’s posts - at least read those

donquixotedelamancha · 21/09/2019 12:02

‘i can’t understand a word you are saying’ or ‘this is so badly written, I cannot work it out.’

Sometimes this is just rudeness about someone who is a bit of a poor writer or upset.

Sometimes OPs posts are fucking impenetrable because they are narcissistic windbags who don't use paragraphs or punctuation.

donquixotedelamancha · 21/09/2019 12:04

MrsFogi do you live in a parallel universe or something? The OP's posts are in a different colour.

I think, given the question the OP is asking, that post is ironic.

Topseyt · 21/09/2019 12:16

I do have the posts of the OP set to come up in a specific colour so that I can skim through, but even so, some threads are still pages and pages long so it can be very time consuming.

It is the threads where the very first few posters have not even read the OP that really annoy me. For example, if someone begins by saying "DD is four. We have XYZ problems. Any advice?" and within minutes someone had responded with "How old is DD?"

You do have the ability to set your own and the OP's posts to appear in certain colours. That does help a lot, but I think too that the option to "contract" the thread to see just the OP's posts would also be useful, especially if a thread is extremely long, and I've seen plenty run up to 30 plus pages.

Vulpine · 21/09/2019 12:19

Can i see your badge please officer?

JinglingHellsBells · 21/09/2019 12:20

@Bessica1970 Sadly MNHQ have not set an intelligence or English comprehension test to weed out the posters who cannot grasp the issues or read updates.

Look, this forum is a bit of fun in the main. There is life, full of reading, family, nature, and loads of great stuff to do if you can bear to step away from the keyboard. Being on a forum is not mandatory and life may be more fun if you step away a bit more.
