AIBU to expect people to RTFT before posting?

Seriously - why would you put a comment on a thread before reading to the end? I’ve waded through a few threads lately where posters have written stuff that has already been addressed by the OP in subsequent comments, because they haven’t RTFT. At the very least, scroll through at read updates by the OP before posting. Life is too short to wade through the drivel.

YABU
So what.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 21/09/2019 12:31

“Haven’t RTFT but why don’t you {insert obvious piece of advice which has been suggested dozens of times since the first page of comments}?”

YANBU

StillCoughingandLaughing · 21/09/2019 12:39

Life is definitely too short to RTFT when it's reached 687 messages.

Then why add message 688? You can’t possibly be saying anything that hasn’t already been said - and if you’re too busy to read 687 posts, surely everyone else will be too; therefore you’re wasting your time.

SudowoodoVoodoo · 21/09/2019 12:48

I tend to read p1, jump to the end then read back on a longer thread. Usually it's enough to reveal a change of direction on the thread.

OP's posts are in a different colour, but they might update on p5, then p9 of a 12 page thread which is a lot of skimming for little content.

The check the end strategy is also good for checking if it's descended into a 2 poster irrelevant bun fight that's not worth engaging with.

Bessica1970 · 21/09/2019 13:00

I agree that when a post has reached hundreds of messages there’s no time to read them all, but at least read the OP’s updates so you’re not adding something useless!

How can you read just the OP posts?

Some threads are sooooo long

Bessica1970 · 21/09/2019 13:03

For posters suggesting I leave MN - I have considered it, but I have had a few LOL giggles on here recently ( thread about house sitting for daughter, etc) so when threads are good, they’re great.

Octoberlovers - on my phone the OP posts are in a green box. I guess it’s something you need to activate, because this doesn’t happen on my laptop.

Yanbu. It also details threads.

You get it where a poster, 2 or 3 posts in has misinterpreted ops post, or just added details they have made up. Then posters keep turning up believing the incorrect post.

There was one about the ops husband changing their holiday. A post a few posts in said 'how dare he tell you it was his money that paid for it so he will do as he wishes'

It was a long thread and posters kept turning up with 'I cant believe he said it was his money. Thats a red flag. Go on holiday without him and then leave him'

So people would point out he didnt actually say that and that they havent read any of the posts as to why he moved it....then later someone would start the cycle over.

Theres one now talking about finances. The opiate has said several times that her and her husband live day to day and have financial room to manoeuvre.

A poster came along 'I cant see where the op said money is tight.'

So people tell them to read the thread they will insist they have but missed the key point. The key point being the ops family is skint.

SunshineAngel · 21/09/2019 13:05

I was once called a "stupid, lazy cunt" for not reading through a 12 page thread.

I think you should be able to see JUST OP's updates (not just in a different colour, I mean change the settings so none of the others can be seen) to make it easier, but until that happens, you can be sure I'll carry on posting my opinion without reading through every single post.

At least my posts are topical. The post calling me a stupid lazy cunt didn't even address the OP, and still took up space in the thread, lol.

hiphopchick · 21/09/2019 13:09

@Bessica1970

YANBU, and it is annoying. However, I don't think most people can be arsed to read through the full thread, when there is more than 10 pages. (So like 250-260 messages or more..)

If a thread is more than 10 pages in, I don't usually join in and post on it, because I know what I have got to say has probably already been said.

Mysterian · 21/09/2019 13:09

Forums are about posting, not reading.

Hydrogenbeatsoxygen · 21/09/2019 13:11

I don’t RTFT as I need to get my excellent advice onto the thread ASAP.

MyNewBearTotoro · 21/09/2019 13:13

I rarely RTFT unless it’s in its infancy but I agree that before posting people should at least try to read all of the OP’s posts as often the thread can evolve dramatically as they add updates (or drip feeds!).

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 21/09/2019 13:13

I have always see threads as a dialogue. Not just a place to offer my wisdom no matter what.

x2boys · 21/09/2019 13:47

@TheMustressMhor only my posts appear in a different colour not the Op,s but yeah it's because people can't be bothered reading 35 page of posts .

DontLettuceBrexitLettuceRemain · 21/09/2019 14:14

@MrsFogi assume you're being sarcastic?

QueenoftheBiscuitTin · 21/09/2019 14:31

If you can be bothered to click on a thread, you can at least read the OP's posts. Why take the time to comment otherwise?

GrapefruitGin · 21/09/2019 14:33

YABU - if it’s a 10 page thread, I won’t read all comments however I would read OP’s updates.

EggysMom · 21/09/2019 14:35

OP, havent RTFT but have you considered simply knocking on the door and talking to your neighbours?

Grin
HaveeeeYouMetTed · 21/09/2019 14:37

Haven't RTFT 🙄
But Also you can highlight OPs posts in settings. - How?? This would be so handy. I've had a look at settings & apart from username change, I can't really see any other settings.

SteelRiver · 21/09/2019 14:39

YABU - some threads are 15 pages long before I read them. If it's short, I will read it, like 1 page!

chomalungma · 21/09/2019 14:40

If you come along a thread and don't bother to read it properly or read any updates from the OP, then your comments can be pretty annoying and irrelevant.

rookiemere · 21/09/2019 14:43

Amazing how people don't have time to read a thread, but do have the time to type out their nuggets of wisdom based on the opening post or sometimes just the thread title, which then of course prove to be totally redundant due to updates.

If you don't have time to read the thread or at least look out the OPs updates - and yes there is a chance they may name change as there is no rule against it - then don't bother posting.

EmeraldShamrock · 21/09/2019 15:41

Yabu sort of. Some people wade on having only read the OP. I generally read the first few and the last page before I comment. If it is very interesting I'll work my backwards.
