The NHS is falling apart

I know there are many wonderful caring staff out there working in the NHS.

But overall, it's a bit shit isn't it? It's (mostly) not the fault of the staff. It's just underfunded and can't deliver what it needs to meet demand.

We all have to pretend it's great but it's not.

The NHS is falling apart yes. If it wasn’t for staff working over their hours, through their lunch, unpaid most of the time, it would have collapsed already.

It’s deliberately underfunded AND the money they do have is also mis-managed contributing to the problem.

One example. I’m a midwife, on our postnatal ward this year they changed all the toilet seats from white to blue as a study has shown that dementia patients recognise blue toilet seats better. Would be a good use of money on most wards but the postnatal ward! How many women with dementia are likely to be all having babies?? They even changed the staff toilet, you know for all those midwives working with dementia. Absolute waste of money!

I've been in hospitals for lots of Fridays, as I am sure others have. Maybe I had the 10% that didn't disappear. There wasn't a day where I didn't see at least two of my consultants.

The only thing I like about the blue seats is they remind me to give them a quick wipe first, even when foggy from meds.

Surgeons can’t bloody operate all day and all night! When are they supposed to sleep? To employ loads of extra surgeons and all the associated nursing and support staff so they can run theatres 24/7 would cost a fortune, and there wouldn’t be enough hospital beds anyway.
And if some surgeons go home early on a Friday maybe it’s because by then they’ve probably already done 60 or more hours that week.
Personally I don’t want an exhausted surgeon that hasn’t had enough rest or sleep operating on me.
The problems in the NHS are not due to lazy staff!!

And my dh got home at 8pm last night, he started a ward round in the morning at 8am then did loads of endoscopies all day. He could only dream of having Friday afternoons off.

Yes it absolutely is falling apart

Some areas are still working fantastically but it’s few

We need to look at other healthcare systems

Most of my NHS colleagues agree

I work in community pharmacy and we do see a lot of people with a sense of entitlement (example- they want their 32 paracetamol or their kids’ teething gel on prescription because “they pay their taxes”). Mercifully this has reduced A fair bit as some items are no longer be prescribed by GPs.

Also, i’ve come across some people who openly admit to our faces that they send their prescribed medication to relatives abroad to use (dangerous in itself).
My personal experience of the NHS has been largely positive, the hospital staff (nurses, HCA, Doctors etc ) took wonderful
Care of my father (and is) when he was passing away. They knew he would not survive but they still treated him with such humanity and care. I will never forget them.

Procurement is a joke. In my dept our manager personally buys pens, paperclips, post it notes etc from her own money because it is cheaper. We need a particular stationery item that is £3 from NHS or £5 for 5 on ebay for the exact same item that i pay for from my own wages, alongside other bits and bobs (non clinical) that can be sourced elsewhere.

DaveMinion · 21/09/2019 21:47

I had an ent appointment to see about getting my tonsils out on the 13th and my surgery is on the 9th. I do work in the theatre dept but that’s that’s the usual waiting list time as my surgery last year was just as quick booking wise.

I think my trust deserves it’s outstanding rating tbh. I get great care from all I see and I see great care everyday at work from all my colleagues.

I wish I could say the same for the trust where I see my rheumatologist. I got lost for a year. I am considering asking to be referred elsewhere but it means starting at the beginning with all the mri’s etc and I can’t be arsed.

it makes me fume to see the rudeness of some , not all, of the general public who are being treated , people shouting at staff, criticising and being abusive, especially drunks, parents who've brought their 'sick ' child into a and e who seems fine, running around the unit where genuinely sick people are waiting their turn, moaning about why they are waiting etc, also witnessing morbidly obese patients telling clinical staff to 'fuck off and mind their own business' when being asked to help themselves to improve their health by taking responsibility, yes, it's definitely overstretched by being used by over entitled people who have never put a penny into the system but expect to receive first class treatment as a right. Appointments missed because people just can't be arsed to turn up or let a secretary know so someone else can use the appointment

My daughter has a job at the moment that is a zero hour contract. She has been on the way to work before and they've rang and said she's no longer needed. She has also arrived at work to do a 8-5 shift and been sent home at 2. This doesn't suit her very well as she is currently trying to get through her driving test. She has to keep cancelling lessons as she hasn't got enough money to pay for them.
I think it depends on the employer massively. As she can't pick and choose her hours like other people have said. She booked time off to go to a festival in August. They didn't give her any shifts the week before or after this time off. In her contract it also states if she has time off sick she has to get a doctors note It seems very one sided in their favour to me
