AIBU to ask if anyone knows much about kidney stones?

Thought I had a UTI.
Eventually gave in and went to Urgent Care Centre tonight.
Infection: 1+
Protein: 5+
Blood in urine: 3+

Dr said I've to go to GP in morning to get referred for an urgent scan of kidneys/bladder/urethra. Something wrong with kidneys apparently. Said possibly kidney stone.

Anyone know much about them? I've never had a kidney stone.

Shit, just copped that tomorrow is Sunday so won't be able to go to GP tomorrow! He said only the GP can refer for scan, he couldn't. So it's going to be Monday before I get a GP.
What do I do in that case if pain gets worse? A&E I guess?

If you call 111 they can start the triage process for you.

My DH had some large kidney stones and I took him to A&E thinking he had a kidney infection. They gave him very strong pain killers and admitted him for a few days.

MrsMonkeyBear · 21/09/2019 05:50

I had kidney stones 3 years ago. Drink lots of water, pain killers and rest. Co-codamol and ibuprofen alternated. If the pain is still unbearable with those, then A&E. (My doctor told me this.)

My urgent scan took 3 weeks. By then I had passed the stone(s)

HypatiaCade · 21/09/2019 05:56

With a kidney stone the pain will get progressively worse until you pass the stone and then you're left feeling bruised and a little shakey. How much pain depends on the size of the stone. If the pain gets too unbearable you'll need to go to A & E. You will NOT be able to drive yourself.

Yadid · 21/09/2019 05:56

Ok, well if it's going to take 3 weeks for a scan, one more day won't make much difference I suppose.
Not sure what to do in the meantime though.

Yadid · 21/09/2019 05:58

Seems a bit silly that if I need an urgent scan he didn't just tell me to queue up for A&E there and then. It never dawned on me that tomorrow is Sunday.

I had kidney stones about 15 years ago and it was worse than giving birth and I have had 2 children (it took 3 days to pass them and I didn't sleep a wink!) - I need to ask the Doctor for another kidney scan because they can return unfortunately.

Jesaminecollins · 21/09/2019 06:03

@Yadid

They will do scans on a Sunday if it is urgent.

Wer2Next · 21/09/2019 06:05

Unless you're screaming in pain, septic, heavily urinating blood (and I don't mean blood tinged) UCC or A&E will not do anything but send you back to your gp.

MrsMonkeyBear · 21/09/2019 06:07

It might not take 3 weeks for you to get scanned. It depends on what type the doctor orders and where you are. I'm in
near Edinburgh and had a CT scan. But they have since built another radiography department at another hospital near me and it's now an open clinic, you get a referral from the GP and go the next day.

Yadid · 21/09/2019 06:13

Pain was pretty bad when I called 111. Has eased somewhat now (took 2 nurofen at about 3.30am). Will see how I get on over the weekend I suppose.

He said that only the GP can refer me for the scan which is obviously closed until Monday now. All a bit nonsensical TBH.

OP posts:
Yadid · 21/09/2019 06:16

I have a feeling it's related to kidney failure. Bit of crucial info which I've left out, but I just have a sense that there is something seriously wrong.

Frangible · 21/09/2019 06:17

111 told me to go to my nearest urgent care centre (London) in the middle of the night, they kept me in (well, trolley in corridor), shot me full of painkillers and scanned me in the morning. But by the point of admission, I was on my hands and knees begging for death. I’d had a baby a few months earlier, and this made labour feel like a gentle twinge.

Sympathies, OP.

meccacos2 · 21/09/2019 06:19

I had a couple of them, emergency surgery to remove the biggest one.

My urine was black. Public hospital failed to diagnose, I ended up driving myself to a private hospital and paying $$ privately.

Urine eventually backed up and started burning my kidney and started failing.

Fluid started accumulating in my face and legs.

I was told this was up there with the most pain. However, I’ve had worse.

Yadid · 21/09/2019 06:20

I'm pretty peeved TBH that knowing it was Friday night/Saturday morning, he has left me over the weekend. Surely he should have told me to go through A&E there and then.

OP posts:
meccacos2 · 21/09/2019 06:21

In hospital I was given morphine and fentanyl for the pain and lost consciousness.

Prior to this I walked around for 3 weeks dealing with the pain.

It took three separate surgeries to remove the stones and the stent.

lovemenorca · 21/09/2019 06:23

Op you were in a hospital and the doc said go to your gp and get referred

Quite clearly he doesn’t see you as an urgent case. If urgent he would have arranged for a scan for yesterday.
So see your GP and get a referral but try not to worry as it doesn’t seem critical by any stretch based on this doctors response

Yadid · 21/09/2019 06:24

That's the thing, he emphasised several times that I need the scan urgently. If it's that blooming urgent why leave me over the weekend?

OP posts:
lovemenorca · 21/09/2019 06:24

Has eased somewhat now (took 2 nurofen at about 3.30am). Will see how I get on over the weekend I suppose.

If over the counter meds are helping then it’s unlikely it is serious

When over the counter doesn’t touch the sides - that’s when alarm bells start ringing!

Yadid · 21/09/2019 06:26

He was not happy with the urine results at all. Oh well. Just grin and bear it I suppose.

OP posts:
j3mz · 21/09/2019 06:29

Never had them it but my cousin likes to send pics of big ones she bad to remove surgically Confused its grim

Yadid · 21/09/2019 06:29

Despite peeing every 5 minutes all day, I've actually not passed much urine at all. I'm genuinely quite worried. I just have a feeling my kidneys may be failing.

OP posts:
Yadid · 21/09/2019 06:33

He also said that I need to be referred to nephrology. It so happens my dbro is a nephrologist. Have messaged him but he's in a different timezone. Bro also knows the somewhat probably highly relevant piece of information/history that I'm omitting, so I'll see what he comes back with. Not much info for him to go on though with no blood results.

Bunnybigears · 21/09/2019 06:39

I had kidney stones the pain was horrendous, definitely worse than childbirth! I also passed very little water despite constant toilet visits. The stone was blocking anything coming out iyswim.

Cary2012 · 21/09/2019 11:12

I went to A&E on a Saturday morning because the pain which I had managed for a week on nurofen and co-codomol became unbearable and I was being sick and had bouts of passing out. They gave me anti sickness shot and started on morphine. The relief from morphine was wonderful. With your history, added to how things can turn for the worse with these, I'd go to A&E today if I was you. They scanned me the following morning and the stone had passed, but I was very bruised and signed off from work for two weeks. If you do decide to wait, take regular pain relief and drink as much water as you can.
