AIBU to ask if anyone knows much about kidney stones?

Thought I had a UTI.
Eventually gave in and went to Urgent Care Centre tonight.
Infection: 1+
Protein: 5+
Blood in urine: 3+

Dr said I've to go to GP in morning to get referred for an urgent scan of kidneys/bladder/urethra. Something wrong with kidneys apparently. Said possibly kidney stone.

Anyone know much about them? I've never had a kidney stone.

I don’t know that much. What I do know is that I had them about 10 years ago. It hurts a lot I was vomiting a lot out of sheer pain. They gave me some strong painkillers and some meds to help pass it though. It took me about a week to feel back to normal. I know that women can pass them through but men can’t. Because of our anatomies of our urinal tract are different.

I hope you feel better soon, as it really is horrible Flowers

If you get the pain back really badly and can't dull it with painkillers, go back at once to A&E - if you happen go during normal working hours they are more likely to be able to send you for ultrasound scan easily. It has nothing to do with kidney failure so don't panic (if they suspect that they can see from a blood test how your kidney function is doing).DRINK LOTS OF WATER TO HELP FLUSH IT OUT. Did you get given antibiotics for the urine infection? If they end up having to remove the stone for you, please insist that they send it for analysis so you know what it is composed of and can then research how to avoid making them (diet) in future.
I am a kidney stone maker and have had lots of small ones through my life. They were excruciating but all passed by themselves. However, I am under annual check by a dedicated kidney stone clinic (scanned every year), because of having a single kidney (lost one NOT due to stones) and since getting really useful advice on what not to eat/drink and told to drink 3 litres of (watery) fluid a day, I have not made a single one. Before, I used to go through a busy working day on one litre or less. I just wish someone had told me years ago how to avoid them. BTW met a lady in the stone clinic who had 12 in her kidney at the time (and she wasn't an emergency), so please don't worry too much.

I would go to A&E. Take a good book for the wait. Don't fuck with your health. My DH woke in agony with these - I called an ambulance.

NotSoThinLizzy · 21/09/2019 12:32

I've had stones twice 1st time passed them with help of morphine and the 2nd time they were to large to pass. que being a week in pain then my kidneys stopped working so they had to operate to move them. Then had another op later to clear the smaller ones. I was full of them 😂

DaveMinion · 21/09/2019 22:07

Go to a&e. They can do a ct scan or refer for an ultrasound urgently.

I’ve had stones twice. The pain was horrendous. The first time I had an ultrasound the next day and a ct the day after. The second time I had a ct while I was there. I managed to pass all mine myself. I then developed hydronephrosis and found out I have slow kidneys and congenital large nephrons.

With your extra issues I wouldn’t leave anything to chance.

DaveMinion · 21/09/2019 22:08

Ps buscopan is good for the pain. You can get it over the counter.

Well update of sorts. Today I was ok. Just the urgency and frequent peeing with pain. Went to lie down about 20 mins ago and pain is back again now moreso on my left side down near groin. I know it sounds kidney related but I don't understand as I've no pain where kidneys are.
Waiting on a nurse or paramedic to call me back from 111.
Not sure what's the point of going to OOH doc again tonight if that's what they suggest.
Presumably it will cost me a fortune to get there and back, they'll take another urine sample and I won't be any better off.
Not sure what to do tbh.
My bro messaged and said to definitely go to GP on Monday as protein and blood is very high. Suggested stone or infection.

Well advice is to go to A&E

Off you go then.
At least they should scan you.
Does sound like a kidney infection or a stone on its way out or a bit of both.

Weenurse · 22/09/2019 01:25

Make sure you pee into a container like an old ice cream container. Then strain pee through a chux or similar so you can catch the stone.
This is important so it can be sent to the lab for analysis to work out what type of stone it is and what dietary or medication changes may be required.

I have had a kidney stone twice. First time I went into urine retention unable to pass anything despite trying and after 5 hours of that passed out, body started shutting down and was ambulanced into A&E and spent 10 days in hospital. The pain was off the wall but mostly my heart slowed and I went delirious. Was nearby home so my mum races to see me and was very insistent that ambulance hurried up.
Second time (20 years later) urine frequency for 18 hours was in pain crawling around on floor, recognised pain and passed stone in the 3 hours waiting for ambulance after it got desperate and as I knew what it was (you remember that pain, it's very specific). If my parents had been around/close they'd have driven me into a&e without waiting. It took a while to recover both times. I can't imagine waiting 3 weeks for a test unless it's only minor troublesome

I hope you are better soon and get the medical help you need, if you are getting into trouble with it. Some are small and pass naturally, some block your urethra and cause all sorts of shut down.

WillLokireturn · 22/09/2019 01:54

My tip would be monitor your temperature. My temperature spiked to really high both times even though I felt freezing and and clammy. I'm not sure if that's a clinical sign of a kidney stone or related to other secondary issues it can cause that makes it more urgent.

Kinneddar · 22/09/2019 02:12

I've got 3 large staghorn stones in my kidney. They're too big to pass and i frequently have infections. I've been hospitalised few times. The only painkillers that work for me are cocodamol and naproxen

I've been told by my consultant that if I have pain and excessive tenderness or a temperature then I should go straight to A&E

Jesaminecollins · 22/09/2019 05:56

@Yadid

You do know that kidney stones can block the uretha and stop you passing urine?

This is life or death - go to A & E immediately!

I have a 20 year history with kidney stones and am scanned every year.

Some are small enough to pass (with agony) but some of them are not.Your scan is mega urgent to determine what you are dealing with.
I’ve had lithotripsy to break up larger ones, and laser surgery for others, with stents and subsequent stent removal.

Retained urination can be a medical emergency. You also need better pain relief! Get yourself to A and E and stay there until you get proper care.

I hope you’ll be feeling better soon.
