Expecting a sofa company to care that my daughter choked on a faulty sofa button?

Over a week ago, I had to forcibly retrieve a faulty sofa button from my 18 month old daughter’s mouth. The sofa is 4/5 years old (from Sofology) and a button had fallen out of the side cushion through no fault of ours. The button was not pulled or broken and simply became unattached to the button on the other side. Fortunately I was close to my daughter and noticed she was panicked and unable to breathe so was able to act.
Shortly after this happened, I called Sofology who despite repeatedly promising to call me, never bothered. I had to chase through email, Twitter and finally again by phone. Through a DM on Twitter, I was informed that due to the sofa being 4/5 years old and not being able to know how the button came loose, they would take no action. After calling them and expressing my concern that no one from Sofology seemed concerned enough about by situation to bother picking up the phone and calling a distressed mother, they offered to send someone to my home to fix the button.
I really don’t want this sofa - that represents a very clear danger to my child as it has 38 other buttons on it - in my home.
AIBU to expect Sofology to take this more seriously and do more than send someone out to fix the button?

Why would repeatedly harassing the sofa company be your main priority?
YABY, if was brand new you may have a fair point but not now.

Your incompetence to ensure your child is safe is on you, no one else is responsible for the items you bring into your home especially after half a decade has passed

Well that's BS. Surely Trading Standards standards are there to make sure that items we bring in to our homes are fit for purpose and don't pose a danger for the items lifetime

Tilltheendoftheline · 21/09/2019 20:36

Trading standards cant guarantee somethings safety for lifetime.

Because no one monitors how much something is used or how ist used in our homes.

You are advised to keep checking items you use for safety.

I have a nutri ninja. If it becomes battered in years to come and the wires become bare, I use it and get a shock. Trading standards will not look at it and say that Nutri ninja are responsible when it's been in my care for 5 years. I should check it and if I notice something wrong, not use it.

A sofa that’s 5yrs old isn’t the responsibility of the shop this far down the line. Sorry but people sitting on it day in and day out of course things become lose. If you’re that worried it’s best to replace it. Sorry but they won’t be offering you a new sofa. They can phone you and sympathise but I suspect you want more than that? Horrible thing to happen. If I was so worried about it happening again I’d be getting rid of the sofa

SheChoseDown sorry to derail, but is your name a Labyrinth reference?

OP, sometimes when something scary happens, we look to appoint blame. Often it’s to assuage guilt.

What would you like Sofology to do?

I’m very glad your little girl is ok. 18 months is such a difficult age, you need eyes on the back of your head with them.

If you don't feel safe with it around your daughter, buy a new sofa without buttons! Put it on Gumtree and sell it to someone without children. As PP have said, at 4-5 years old it will be showing signs of wear & tear and yes, clearly buttons are not structural, or indestructible. What do you do for a living? Imagine it was something that could pose a very theoretical, loose threat (building ponds, for example). If someone's child was injured would you expect to be held responsible? Even though they asked you to build the pond? Presumably you chose the sofa with the buttons and asked them to deliver it to your house. It was fit for purpose for 4 years + and needs maintenance and risk assessment the same as anything else in your house I'm afraid. Unless Sofology are coming to your home to regularly inspect it for wear & tear? No - because that's your job as the owner and a parent.

The sofa is 5 years old fgs. It's called wear and tear. Accidents happen but your DD is ok,which is the main thing. Be grateful for that and stop trying it on, you're being ridiculous.
