AIBU to think that the noise isn't my problem?.

I have a guest who is staying for two nights. I live in an area that's a mixture of rural and suburban and I'm on the edge of the two. I live in a street that's directly opposite a farm. The fields are directly opposite my house. Currently the farmer is out on one of his huge machines doing farmers do. He's been doing this for most of the day. As we're opposite what seems to be his main crop field it's very loud but just what you'd expect living here.

Guest is complaining about the noise. She's not impressed that I didn't warn her and is demanding that I find out when it'll end.I refused. I appreciate it's loud but farmers have to farm.

AIBU to expect her to suck it up or leave if it's such an issue?

She obviously doesn't realise that the countryside is basically a giant outdoor factory.

Bless.

She's being ridiculous. We have a farm near us and while it can be annoying, all day and quite loud, it's one of those things and out of your control. The farmer tends to do it when they can, weather etc, so they can't exactly schedule it in.
I also cant imagine many farmers knocking on doors and warning about the noise/do you mind if I harvest my crops/move my cows.

It’s probably because I’ve lived semi-rurally my whole life but this is the most rediculous thing I’ve ever heard. Surely even most children know it’s peak harvest time.

Our village hall make extra money by allowing caravan clubs to use the land and facilities for weekend meetings. It is a real pain for the locals, they are often very noisy and run generators so they can live home from home. Living rurally you get used to farming noises and I can sleep through all night combining but not rowdy campers.
DS calls them weekend gypsies.
We always know when they are due because the local farmer arranges to muck spread in the adjacent field the day they arrive. He is my hero.

Although they did cover my car in shredded maize (sweet corn) the other day as I drove home. I now have a white car with yellow spots. It was a bloody good job I didn’t have the sun roof open!

My in laws live in the country and the noise is unreal
I’m a city girl through and through and I couldn’t believe how noisy it was
I didn’t say anything to them as my mil would only get stressy (she’s a people pleaser) and at the end of the day it’s life in the country (they don’t seem to notice it)

(Although I was very bloody tempted to strangle a stray sheep at 5am-god that thing was loud)

Around me they are working the stubble fields, and the ploughing is just getting underway. Plus silaging the grass fields for the last cut of the year. It's all go at this time of year!

I must admit I don't mind the field work, it's when the huuuuuuge great equipment comes through the village on its way to the further fields, lights blazing at 3am and makes the dog bark....

SamBeckett · 20/09/2019 23:46

This brings back happy memories of me helping bring the hay and straw in at the stables that I worked at , gruellingly hard work and until you get the knack of been able to roll the bales as you throw them its back breaking .
We grew the crops about a mile away from the barn we could of drove the tractor pulling the trailer about three quarts of the way there through the field but my boss took delight in waiting till he could hear a car speeding up the road and he would then pull out so the car had to creep along behind us for , I often sat in the trailer to ensure the bales didnt fall off wave to the grumpy car driver for a mile .

Re people being surprised by farm activity or smells:
I know if someone who bought a house next to a farm. And by ‘next to’ I mean the wall of the active cow shed was about 15 meters from his house wall and had been there for years. It was a dairy farm so obviously in use all day every day not just for overwintering cattle.
Anyway he complained to the council about farm smells! What an idiot. And he was a qualified architect too so he should have had half a clue. Shoulda gone to spec savers....

StCharlotte · 21/09/2019 11:20

When we lived next to a farm, the only noise that disturbed me at night was their dogs barking. Turned out it was one of our cats taunting them by sitting by their cage just out of reach... Blush

We had the misfortune of a neighbour with this attitude for a brief spell. They complained about everything, including visiting with a hard copy of the rules for noise, with no concept that harvesting at unsocial hours isn’t the same as building work or loud music. How we laughed.

Sma Beckett - A friend of mine's DH was killed by a tractor doing that!

Blimey OP I hope she doesn't turn up when it's muck-spreading time Envy
