AIBU to think that the noise isn't my problem?.

I have a guest who is staying for two nights. I live in an area that's a mixture of rural and suburban and I'm on the edge of the two. I live in a street that's directly opposite a farm. The fields are directly opposite my house. Currently the farmer is out on one of his huge machines doing farmers do. He's been doing this for most of the day. As we're opposite what seems to be his main crop field it's very loud but just what you'd expect living here.

Guest is complaining about the noise. She's not impressed that I didn't warn her and is demanding that I find out when it'll end.I refused. I appreciate it's loud but farmers have to farm.

AIBU to expect her to suck it up or leave if it's such an issue?

Will she be eating any food at all whilst she's with you?

If so, does she realise how it originally got to the shop you bought it from in the first place?

Drum2018 · 20/09/2019 20:32

Tell her to cop on or leave. If she stays set your alarm for 6am and start hoovering or using a food processor just to annoy her even more.

Wow

Of course because her needs are so very important compared to everyone elses

What a silly mare

Rainbowshine · 20/09/2019 20:33

Did your friend think it is quiet in the country Grin

MrsMozartMkII · 20/09/2019 20:35

Oh sheep! Early morning lambing sounds (and late morning and early afternoon and late afternoon and early evening and late evening and all-through-the-night lambing sounds Grin ).

TheFrendo · 20/09/2019 20:35

Make hay while the sun shines. Or silage. We have the last sunny day tomorrow, maybe the farmer is turning over his drying grass.

MrsExpo · 20/09/2019 20:37

Feed her toast for breakfast and remind her where it comes from. She’s being an idiot.

Frouby · 20/09/2019 20:37

I'd make the farmer a cuppa and a sarnie. Tell her to fuck off to bed with earplugs.

Cherrysoup · 20/09/2019 20:39

Our lot are currently baling the straw. I’d just love her to ask them when they’re gonna stop. One of them is VERY grumpy!

RosaWaiting · 20/09/2019 20:41

“but for some reason it doesn't occur to the farmer to give his neighbours a copy of scheduled farm work”

This made me lol so hard

Then “farmers gonna farm” 😂

Seriously, if the noise is bugging her that much she should leave.

DdraigGoch · 20/09/2019 20:41

but for some reason it doesn't occur to the farmer to give his neighbours a copy of scheduled farm work.
Funnily enough, farm work isn't run to a schedule. Activities like harvesting and haymaking are very weather dependent.

I know. I wasn't being literal.

It gets quite spooky at night seeing these huge machines up and down the lane with their lights on, I love to see them. She needs to learn where her food comes from. Hope she isn't a fan of quinoa, there could be a shortage, silly Adam!

onalongsabbatical · 20/09/2019 20:56

I think you need to sit her down and give her a lesson in the meaning of the word 'entitled'.

Elieza · 20/09/2019 21:00

She must be a city kid. No clue about rural life. Probably rejects wonky shaped veg in the shops as there’s something wrong with it. Reality check required Smile

ICouldBeSomebodyYouKnow · 20/09/2019 21:10

Oh, this takes me back to childhood, helping with the baling. Happy days.

Itsallpetetong · 20/09/2019 21:12

Your guest is being not only RUDE, but ridiculous. Don’t ever let them stay again.

SpartanInTartan · 20/09/2019 21:14

I don't think it's a city kid thing. I'm from a major U.K. City. She's from a small comparatively remote town.

Thankfully she's stopped grumbling for the moment. Hopefully that'll last.

She's being an eejit!
Its harvest time and they have to get the harvest in while the sun shines.
Would listen to it 1000 times over my ex neighbours Friday night parties!!

PurpleTigerLove · 20/09/2019 21:22

She’s hilarious. Can you recommend earplugs ? She’s complaining about the noise while the farmer is still working? I’m sure he’d rather be in a quiet house too . I wouldn’t invite her again if she can’t respect the countryside and those who work and live there . Bloody townies !

coffeeandbiscuittime · 20/09/2019 21:32

I must be sad, but I love watching the combine harvester working on the field , i can watch it at night from my window. we give the farmers tea, water and beer after a hard day. I love city life ( grew up a city girl) but I love semi rural life more. tell your guest to embrace it!

timshelthechoice · 20/09/2019 21:32

'No, I won't go ask him when it's over. You're being quite rude. You're free to leave if the accommodation isn't to your liking.' There, fixed it for you.

SpartanInTartan · 20/09/2019 21:32

I'm a townie! It isn't a townie thing.

Anyway, Thank you all for your responses. I appreciate it.

This reminds me of a program a few years ago where someone bought a property next to a farm because the animals are so cute but when the cows start calving at all hours they complained- such inconsiderate cows not giving birth in silence!!! They even had noise abatement from the council out!
