To say that Merlin are money-grabbing slags?

I know this is a first-world problem and IBU for even setting foot in Legoland..but the kids love it. However I think we have to stop going.

They have been sending me emails saying they are having a big sale and free entry to the park on the 2nd day, with a deadline of the 15th September. So I booked a 1 night stay just before the deadline, then this week I see that they have dropped the price by £70 and still includes the 2nd day entry into the park.

Because this feels as if I was misled, I called to ask if they can refund the difference, NO.

Can they cancel (under distance selling regs) and I will rebook, NO.

(I checked and looks as if DSR doesn't apply to package hols according to gov.uk)

It was clear they didn't give 2 shiny shits that I was a regular customer or they would lose our custom.

I have noticed over the years that they are getting grabbier and grabbier but this takes the biscuit. I cannot stand someone thinking they can put their hand in my pocket but when they play on the fact it's for your kids it makes steam come out of my ears.

I know I am not BU to say they're money grabbing slags, AIBU to try to take this further, maybe on social media or CEO letter? Or should I just give up now, but never go ever again??

Ignore the Pearl clutches above

Not pearl clutching - just assumed we had moved on from the 1970s

MustardScreams · 19/09/2019 16:54

Also the definition in the dictionary is literally ‘a woman who has many casual sexual relationships or encounters’.

ScreamingValenta · 19/09/2019 16:54

MustardScreams Aren't you familiar with the idea of words having more than one meaning or application? E.g. if someone said they played cricket using a bat, would you be reporting them to the RSPCA?

JassyRadlett · 19/09/2019 16:55

Just because you are primarily familiar with the word being used about women, that doesn't mean everyone else has the same associations - not everyone moves in your circles and lives in your area.

Which is where objective sources come in handy. Most dictionaries support the idea that in this usage it describes a woman who sleeps around.

Merlin ARE money grabbing

what else is new?

They have no issue with feeling their parks to full capacity knowing full well it will mean hours of queue and people having a real poor experience. They don't care, they just come with a scheme: pay to reduce your queuing time - and even that it's not that great and doesn't guarantee you to do much.

As long as people queue to go in, they can absolutely get away with it. The day they run out of customers, they will have to change. People are happy to pay though

JassyRadlett · 19/09/2019 16:57

Anyway back to the OP. OP, you must bloody hate the Christmas sales.

MustardScreams · 19/09/2019 16:57

@ScreamingValenta I’m pretty sure the op wasn’t describing Merlin as stony waste matter separated during smelting.

Shoxfordian · 19/09/2019 16:57

I think most of us have @bee222
Just not everyone on this thread

Slag also means

Slagis the glass-likeby-productleft over after a desired metal has been separated (i.e.,smelted) from its rawore

Not that this is what the op probably means
Or the usual meaning

ScreamingValenta · 19/09/2019 16:58

Also the definition in the dictionary is literally ‘a woman who has many casual sexual relationships or encounters’.

Look further down the list and you will see an alternative meaning of 'a worthless and contemptible person'.

If Merlin's management were primarily female, I'd think you had a point, Mustard - but their head honchos are male, so how can the OP be using the insult in its 'female' sense?

Witchend · 19/09/2019 16:58

Simple, don't go then. That'll show them.

ThistlyPerf · 19/09/2019 16:58

What other meaning does the word ‘slag’ have?

MustardScreams · 19/09/2019 17:00

Ok @ScreamingValenta find me some sources of men being called slags in a derogatory fashion, ie to belittle and put them down. In famous films, or literature. And as often as women are called it. Then I may see your point.

Bezalelle · 19/09/2019 17:00

It never ceases to amaze me when people are surprised that businesses aren't in it for altruistic purposes. This is capitalism, alas.

ScreamingValenta · 19/09/2019 17:00

From Collins Dictionary:

  1. the fused refuse or dross separated from a metal in the process of smelting
lava resembling this
  1. Chiefly British, Slang
a. a worthless, contemptible person b. a sexually promiscuous woman

verb transitive
Word forms: slagged or ˈslagging

to form into slag
  1. Chiefly British, Slang
to criticize, disparage, or insult often with off verb intransitive
to form into slag
360eyes · 19/09/2019 17:02

It's annoying but you were just unlucky. It's just part for the course.

They tried to attract people with an offer, very few took it, so they knocked it down again.

360eyes · 19/09/2019 17:02

*par, bloody hate this photo e!

360eyes · 19/09/2019 17:03

*phone!!! Argh.

ScreamingValenta · 19/09/2019 17:03

find me some sources of men being called slags in a derogatory fashion, ie to belittle and put them down

If you can bear to sit through some episodes of The Sweeney, you'll hear plenty of examples.

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 19/09/2019 17:03

Its all getting a bit Guy Richie, this thread is.

JassyRadlett · 19/09/2019 17:04

Interesting, which dictionary was it?

MustardScreams · 19/09/2019 17:06

So you’re basing your opinion off of one television programme?

I’m basing mine off of years and years of it being directed at women as a way to undermine them.

JassyRadlett · 19/09/2019 17:06

If you can bear to sit through some episodes of The Sweeney, you'll hear plenty of examples.

Yes, it’s entirely possible that the OP is living in the 70s and using the vernacular. Grin

ScreamingValenta · 19/09/2019 17:06

The meaning of 'worthless and contemptible' person is the only one that makes sense in the OP's title - why can no one see this?

  • Merlin's management is male
  • Their sexual habits can have no bearing on the money grabbing to which the OP objects.
ScreamingValenta · 19/09/2019 17:08

So you’re basing your opinion off of one television programme?

I cited that TV programme as an example. Are you not familiar with the concept of an example?

MustardScreams · 19/09/2019 17:09

Because no one uses the word slag as ‘meaningless and contemptible’! Slag is known by pretty much everyone to mean a women that has sex with many people. Which is not a bloody problem because women can have sex with whoever they bloody well like.

Or as slag in industry terms. That is quite common.

When was the last time you called someone a slag because they were meaningless? Never I’m sure.
