AIBU to be a little peed off with nursery (pic attached)

Had to sign an accident form tonight as my 1yo took a scratch to the face which drew blood at the top of his ear, where one of the nursery staff accidentally caught him with her nail. Her nails are really long, false and pointy. AIBU to think these are inappropriate in this job!?

Yanbu. When I worked in nurseries long nails weren't allowed.

scittlescatter · 18/09/2019 22:02

False nails, long nails, or nail polish should not be permitted for infection control reasons, so yanbu.

BenWillbondsPants · 18/09/2019 22:02

I used to be a nursery nurse - we weren't even allowed to wear nail polish, never mind have long nails. Not that I wanted them anyway.

OrgasmicScalp · 18/09/2019 22:03

I'd be very cross about that. Why are those long nails allowed? Surely nail should be short and neat due to infection control.
Def not BU op!

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 18/09/2019 22:04

YANBU. I assumed it was another child or an accident when I saw the photo but seeing it was a nursery worker...not acceptable!

Chickoletta · 18/09/2019 22:06

YANBU. Complain strongly about this for all of the reasons listed above.

Hmmmmminteresting · 18/09/2019 22:08

Thanks all. I really want to raise it as a complaint however I'm currently in the middle of another complaint regarding poor food choices and a lack of communication so I feel a bit Blush going back into the manager again, like a serial complainer. The manager signed the accident form so she is aware.
At least 2 of the girls have false nails but the one who did it has ridiculous ones. In fairness I've actually never even considered them an issue till today! (Apart from the fact I think they look horrible) Grin

YABU, for being just a little peed off, I'd be very pissed off!

Real lack of common sense allowing nails like that.

Userzzzzz · 18/09/2019 22:10

As an aside, I’d love to know who voted vabu- there always seem to be contrary posters on here voting.

Tonkerbea · 18/09/2019 22:11

I'd raise it- are you sure you're happy with them as a setting?

Userzzzzz · 18/09/2019 22:13

Hmmmmminteresting If you’re at the point of multiple complaints you need to look at another nursery. I say this as someone whose child had a bad accident at nursery and stayed. Their actions and response meant I had absolute trust that they couldn’t have done anything different and it was a genuine accident rather than bad practice on their part.

Hmmmmminteresting · 18/09/2019 22:14

Weve used them for a few years now (older dcs there too) and have been so happy till recently. I cant imagine using another setting to be honest because ds is so settled here and the staff are lovely. I think it's the manager letting things down unfortunately. Shes been there for a very long time and she hasn't changed with the times

Time for a new nursery OP?

ladyflower23 · 18/09/2019 22:14

No she shouldn't have weapons on the end if her fingers working in a nursery. Although saying that a nursery worker managed to gouge a hole in my son's face with her nail that was only slightly long and real. It is more of a risk with talons though.

TheFastandCurious · 18/09/2019 22:14

Cross post sorry

TheRLodger · 18/09/2019 22:15

I was ready to say yabu until I read that the scratch was caused by a staff member with Long false nails. Yanbu

Bookworm4 · 18/09/2019 22:17

Poor wee scone, these nails are not practical, my teenager has them and I have to do shirt buttons up for her. Can’t see how she manages handling babies.

ivegotthisyeah · 18/09/2019 22:17

My son who is at nursery isn't allowed long nails which I totally get so the staff shouldn't either!

AppleKatie · 18/09/2019 22:18

Go and visit some you might be pleasantly surprised by what’s out there.

I’m amazed (and not in a good way!) that the manager lets staff have nails like that. It’s completely inappropriate for the setting.

Girliefriendlikescake · 18/09/2019 22:20

I think if you have 3 complaints with them I'd be looking to change nursery's.

I'd go mad at that scratch.

loveskaka · 18/09/2019 22:21

I would be taking my ds out that nursery, they can't be serious about their jobs if they think they kind of pointy nails are acceptable, surly she knows there is a decent chance she's going to catch a child with the them.

itswinetime · 18/09/2019 22:21

I'm normally fully on the side of knocks and bumps will happen and they are unavoidable but this is different it's completely avoidable and down to poor choices for the workplace.

I would go back tomorrow with the photo and ask to speak to the manger. I would say how unhappy you are and ask if they are changing anything as a result of this. If the answer is yes then there maybe no need to raise a formal complaint. I would expect a good nursery manager to have already said to the staff that fake nails need to be gone as soon as possible. And generally clamp down on appropriate work wear. If they haven't I would log it as a complaint but i agree with a pp I would start looking or alternatives as there are multiple issues not being handled correctly.

Tinysarah1985 · 18/09/2019 22:23

Jesus did she have Freddie kruger nails!?! That is awful.

Span1elsRock · 18/09/2019 22:24

I'd be mortified if I'd scratched someone like that.

Any decent care worker wouldn't have them in the 1st place - and would remove them immediately after that happening if they did.

If you have to report it, shame on them.

cakeandchampagne · 18/09/2019 22:26

YANBU.
Watch for signs of infection.
