To just be appalled a pregnant woman has been jailed over this ?

Yes, ammend the certificate to be factually accurate. But I am genuinely scared and appalled the CPS felt this was in the public interest to prosecute here. I mean, are they going to knock on the door of all Jeremy Kyle guests in a similar situation ? And there are many other cases where I'm just aghast a prosecution was thought to be in the public interest.

There are also women, who will protect a child by having someone else register as the father to keep a domestic abuser out if a child's life, I think we have a real, real authoratitive problem in this country as I could not trust any authorities that thought this was okay ( Daily mail story about mother jailed for naming the wrong man on birth certificate , trying to link but struggling on phone)

What's your threshold for when a pregnant woman should be jailed OP?

WhoCaresWins01 · 19/09/2019 10:53

This link gives more information into the case.

57Varieties · 19/09/2019 10:57

Given the mother is a junkie jail might be the safest place for the poor baby to be born.

x2boys · 19/09/2019 11:02

Well.they sound like a pair of model citizens don't they Hmm And neither sound particularly bright considering there was a DNA test a few weeks previously proving her ex was the father .

Tilltheendoftheline · 19/09/2019 11:06

Quite interesting that she was present via video link, from a prison
So already in prison.

And wow. He has clocked up over 100 offences. She has been in front of the court 15 times? I am guessing that she has more than 15 offences on her record.

Cant wonder why these 2 pillars of the community, have been jailed for making a simple mistake.

x2boys · 19/09/2019 11:13

Ironic really that the Op mentions ,women putting other men's name ,s on the birth certificate to protect a child from an abuser given that the man this woman fraudulently put as the father has convictions for rape and indecent assault.

WellButterMyArse · 19/09/2019 11:17

Blimey that was dim to list the wrong father after a DNA test!

Aaarrgghhh · 19/09/2019 11:27

I hate when women use being a feminist as a reason to be let off or get away with things. You do not put a name on a birth certificate if that person is not the father, it’s simple and to do so is illegal. Don’t be stupid and you won’t go to prison.

WellButterMyArse · 19/09/2019 11:50

Well, you can. Just not in these particular circumstances.

Dyrne · 19/09/2019 12:53

Well there you go - a woman, with multiple previous offences for dishonesty, got given a harsher sentence for yet again committing fraud. With a man who has multiple offences, including assault and sex offences. Colour me shocked.

And yes, biology fucking matters. A friend of mine found out about a genetic predisposition to a nasty disease, literally just as they were about to TTC. To deliberately withhold this sort of information from someone is a truly shitty thing to do.

And yes, I know plenty of situations where a Stepdad has been more loving and involved than the piece of shit biological father, it’s still important that the child knows their full history.

In the days of increasingly cheaper and more available DNA ancestry kits, it’s a stupid secret to keep anyway.

Good point. What a cracking parent she must be, to bring a piece of shit like this into her kids lives, far less pretend that this prince amongst men was the dad.

The “scared and appalled” have gone a bit quiet now, eh?

ColaFreezePop · 19/09/2019 12:59

@WhoCaresWins01 thanks.

Thymejuice · 19/09/2019 13:06

Why did she get a longer sentence than her boyfriend? They both did the crime.

x2boys · 19/09/2019 13:14

I'm guessing because she,s the actual parent so might be thought to be the instigator in this whole sorry mess Thyme ? They will both be out within weeks of each other though I bet .

Aridane · 19/09/2019 13:28

Boyfriend got an extra 8 weeks for breaching a community order. So identical length of sentences

Aridane · 19/09/2019 13:30

I'm of the view that short prison sentences tend to be an expensive luxury, in that they cost us a lot and don't work very well on a societal level. People still reoffend and there are also knock on costs when jobs are lost and children go into care. So personally I'd be quite happy to see custodial sentences in situations like this scrapped

I agree with this generally but not for cases of public fraud, perjury etc where there needs to be a clear deterrent for offences where people - like some posters - don't regard as serious and which have the potential if not detected and punished to severely warp judicial and administrative processes

GibbonLover · 19/09/2019 13:58

She deserves to go to jail for crimes against lipstick.

Spingtrolls · 19/09/2019 14:24

Two prime contenders for dumbest criminals. Grin

However. Wouldn't this now set a precedent? Wasn't there a thread not long ago about someone showing off their new BC, and no mention of an arrest? If I was these two I would appeal on the basis of that very public new BC.

Tilltheendoftheline · 19/09/2019 14:41

Which thread was that one and was there fraud or did they take advantage of allowances legally allowed?

Sootyandsweep2019 · 19/09/2019 17:14

Riiiiggghhhttttt....so nobody genuinely understands why I'm uncomfortable that witholdjng information about a child's paternity has now become a criminal matter ? And if it is legal to register your husband as the father, ( even if you both know this isn't true), aren't we essentially creating one law for middle class married's and one law for the rest ?

OP posts:
57Varieties · 19/09/2019 17:20

She wasn’t simply withholding info. She claimed that another man was the father on an official record.

There has been a long standing presumption in law that a woman’s husband is the father of her child. Lobby your MP to get it changed if you don’t like it. It’s got nothing to do with being “middle class”.

x2boys · 19/09/2019 17:22

How so Op you do realise that it's not only the middle class that get married don't you ?It's Criminal.residents fraud ,wether you personally agree with it is irrelevant ,however in your op.you were more concerned about the fact that a pregnant mother was sent to prison , I think that she probably wouldn't have been had she not been a persistent offender ,she would probably have got a non custodial sentence .

x2boys · 19/09/2019 17:25

A criminal matter because *

YouLikeTheBadOnesToo · 19/09/2019 17:46

Sootyandsweep2019 but she didn’t withhold information, she lied. Withholding would have meant leaving it blank, not making up who you wish the father was.

She herself has 10 previous convictions, and was already in prison during the trial -she appeared via video link. It’s fair to assume that she was given a custodial sentence based on more than just this incident.

itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted · 19/09/2019 17:50

I think it's perfectly acceptable she's been jailed

A few of the posters on MN who are pregnant by other men and haven't told their husbands should take note!
