To delete friend who has joined an MLM

A lady I know from work has joined an MLM selling some sort of laxative coffee.
Her FB and instagram are covered in posts for it and about her promotions/trying to get a car etc etc.
She very much fits the profile of people they poach, she’s a SAHM and it’s been a squeeze of late for her.

I think MLMs are poisonous and I hate seeing her posts flogging this nonsense.
AIBU to remove her from my friend list

I also have a friend that's been sucked in by the "Shit yourself slim" coffee, or whatever it's called.

I just ignore the posts and wait for her to move on. To be fair she created a group and put all the MLM posts in there so she hasn't been overly spamming our newsfeeds on FB. I won't unfriend her, seems a bit harsh, unless as people say the person isn't a proper friend.

CrystalShark · 17/09/2019 07:11

Well, MLM reps constantly parrot that it’s a better shopping experience being able to buy from a friend in the comfort of your/their home, avoid going into town and parking, receive a minor discount sometimes etc. They say ‘why support a faceless corporation instead of your neighbour?’ cos they’re sadly too naive to understand that they’re not independent business owners, they’re unpaid sales reps for a corporation.

Personally having been pitched to by MLM huns before I FAR prefer the anonymous, no pressure experience of browsing around the shops, not being subjected to emotional blackmail or feeling the need to buy things out of pity, you get your product there and then instead of faffing around placing an order then waiting for it to be delivered then having to see the rep again and be subjected to more sales patter just to pick it up, I could go on...

They’re totally out of touch, they know most people don’t want what they’re offering so try and spin it like buying from an acquaintance or friend is superior than just going to the shops. But deep down surely everyone understands that’s not the case.

JennyCarrots · 17/09/2019 07:12

As a previous poster suggested, there's definitely a klaxon going off somewhere calling the hunbots to the defence of dubious selling schemes.

CrystalShark · 17/09/2019 07:14

Yep the klaxon has been sounded. No way would a thread made yesterday be conveniently showing up on a random unrelated google search already. Lies upon lies.

Bring it on, I guess? MN is pretty good at calling MLM bullshitters out on their nonsense.

Mousetolioness · 17/09/2019 07:16

*@CoffeeQueenOfHerts

Wow. So if a famous person, whom u admire, bring out a drink of orange, u wouldnt try it? Have u even tried ur "friends" coffee or even asked her whats in it. Has it has clinical trials and been worked on by a healthcare professional. Are u assuming that as its weightloss it makes u poo. Maybe u should support her and allow u to put an advert on ur profile. Afterall the lady is a friend?*

IME MLM sucks the life blood out of friendships. They generate delusion in buckets and very rarely an income of any substance, except for those higher up the pyramid.

ThatCurlyGirl · 17/09/2019 07:16

@EntitledLittleBrats

I’m sure you are just shining examples for your kids not to judge anyone and to stand up to bullies 🙄 Fucking grow up and take a look in the mirror

Mousetolioness · 17/09/2019 07:17

Bold fail on my part quoting CoffeQueenofHerts...

GlacindaTheTroll · 17/09/2019 07:19

"Yet you’ll call the principle if someone is bullying your child"

If my child had been sucked in to a scheme which meant she stood to lose all her money (next to no-one makes money) and piss of her friends - some instantly because it's such a common, recognisable phenomenon; others in slower time as rapacious repetitive boredom).

Then yes, I'd be calling the principle, to get support to get my child out of that scheme and back to normal.

Mousetolioness · 17/09/2019 07:20

@CrystalShark

Yep!!! And the neighbour is merely the face of the faceless corporation.

GlacindaTheTroll · 17/09/2019 07:24

BTW to the poster who mentioned that if it worked Holland and Barrett would do a version of it; not sure about coffee they do stock slimming teas, and 'Slimmatee' (the slithery surprise poo tea) does contain a mild laxative, and can be quite popular (have seen shout outs for it on MN!)

It's £2.89 a box, but on a BOGOF at the moment. And you don't get spam in your social media if you buy it there. It's an 18+ product btw, and do not take laxatives regularly other than under medical supervision. But for a few days when you want to crash diet? Fill your boots!

OtraCosaMariposa · 17/09/2019 07:24

People are sucked into Bodyshop at home or Usborne simply because they are known names. Sales reps know they don't have to explain what the company is and what the products do because people are familiar with them already. And they can use the "trusted high street brand" stuff to try to hook people in.

I have never "got" Usborne books, we had a woman flogging them at a school fair once, everyone was looking, agreeing the books were great, and then going home to order them from the Book People for 30% of the price. Nobody is going to pay more for a product just to get it from a person rather than from a shop. Especially something generic and not handcrafted.

The whole business model stinks and the only winners are the people you can count on one hand at the top of the pyramids. Usually in Utah. As well as the Elle-Beau blog which is excellent there's a really good podcast called The Dream. Also one about a very extreme MLM/cult called Escaping Nxium.

SisyphusDad · 17/09/2019 07:25

@EntitledLittleBrats

3%may be a big number but it's not as big as 97%.

scaevola · 17/09/2019 07:35

Coffee is a laxative anyhow - about 30% of the population reports this (and about 2/3 of those who notice this effect are women)

Nothing like brekkie of black coffee and a fag to get things moving!

boptist · 17/09/2019 07:38

Most of the treatment towards @CoffeeQueenOfHerts on this thread has been unedifying at best, and cruel at worst.

We must remember that there is a real person reading them, with the same fears and insecurities as the rest of us.

FuckeryOmbudsman · 17/09/2019 07:47

If a real person (not a hunbot) faces an absolute barrage of criticism, perhaps that is something they need to look at. When nearly every person on a thread tells a contributor, perfectly politely (amazingly so for AIBU) , that you are wrong, then only the obtuse would not find that food for thought.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 17/09/2019 07:48

I used to have a few Younique bots on my fb but they have all vanished....has it died a death?
I am kind of missing all the cringe worthy posts and the desperate attempts to recruit others into the scam.

Woodlandwitch · 17/09/2019 07:52

I am assuming @CoffeeQueenOfHerts has posted something about this thread somewhere where other people of MLM’s are which is how @EntitledLittleBrats has stumbled across it.

I hope you are being honest that you aren’t part of one as being a sleep deprived parent of a 15month old you are their target market

CmdrCressidaDuck · 17/09/2019 07:54

I think Entitled has just posted... An actual canned rant? Because there isn't any "article and comments", and nobody could have failed to notice that. Nor has anyone been posting about the figure 3%. This must be an actual copy-paste screed that MLMers post on critical articles. Now that's an interesting insight.

Poor deluded fools regularly post on local parenting Facebook groups I am in about their amazing WFH opportunity which they are strangely reluctant to name. I get them deleted, every time.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 17/09/2019 07:57

Plus why u feel to lose weight and water u have to poo. What about eating less and moving more?

Do you need weird coffee to help with this?

Solihooley · 17/09/2019 07:58

I think I know the product as two of my acquaintances have recently been sucked in. It’s sad to see. They all know the same people locally yet they are apparently both selling out the ‘insane’ product. I think this particular company actually charge you a monthly fee for stock (much like Herbalife) so they will lose a lot of money. I CAN NOT UNDERSTAND how these things aren’t illegal. It’s infuriating. And yes it’s nearly always young SAHM or women on mat leave who are the victims.m

OtraCosaMariposa · 17/09/2019 08:03

I used to have a few Younique bots on my fb but they have all vanished....has it died a death?

I think these things all go in a cycle. Launch with a massive flourish, hype up the "amazing opportunity", suck loads of people in who flood social media and the products are everywhere, then as they slowly realise that they are participants in a mug's game they slink away and quietly move on. So the MLM declines.

But then the people at the top of the "inverted funnel" will come up with something else and the whole thing starts again.

C0untDucku1a · 17/09/2019 08:08

Im starting to think there should be warning by midwives in all antenatal classes about unscrupulous saleswomen targeting women at their most vulnerable, when they've had a baby that has changed their life perspective but have to go back to work.

Wehttam · 17/09/2019 08:10

Poonique and FL are the worst for preying on vulnerable unhappy women, many with weight or emotional issues. These billion dollar mega corporations manipulate and coerce them into alienating their friends and family by continually droning on about opportunities and living a life that is frankly unfeasible.

Hunbots are like lemmings, a tribe of followers with no direction, looking for a way to improve their lives whilst watching fellow bots fail and still foolishly thinking their attempt will work.

A real life version of this time next year we’ll be millionaires Rodders.

ALittleBitAlexis · 17/09/2019 08:16

Woman shd support each other.

There is nothing supportive about encouraging someone to lose money, and the vast majority of people involved in MLMs lose money (those paltry incomes in the disclosure statements are before expenses). Not because of a lack of belief or effort, but because the business model is designed for them to lose money - the hun is the customer.

MLMs are predators who exploit and ruin friendships for their own profit.

Woodlandwitch · 17/09/2019 08:18

@C0untDucku1a I 100% agree
