To not get Disney?

Fridaysgirl · 14/09/2019 15:57

I'm talking about adults here, not kids.

Why do grown men and women feel the need to wear Minnie ears, buy mugs, bags and T shirts of Disney related stuff?

And why in god's name would you pay £££££s to go and gawp and an artificial pink princess castle when you could pay far less to see something real? Or cuddle a Minnie/Mickey Mouse (or should I say a stranger dressed up)?

Please can someone explain all this to me?

OP posts:

"If you don't like it fine, but why need to question us? I'm not moaning at you for not liking it."

Why do you need to question other people's desire to critically think about things?

BenWillbondsPants · 15/09/2019 07:56

Well, it's not my cup of tea either but I'm not sure what you need to 'get' tbh.

You don't like Disney, other people do.

That's about it.

BenWillbondsPants · 15/09/2019 07:57

Why do you need to question other people's desire to critically think about things?

To be fair, we're talking about Disney. Grin

LiveInAHidingPlace · 15/09/2019 08:00

"To be fair, we're talking about Disney."

Disney, the massive corporation which owns half of the entertainment industry and dictates what parents buy for their children and pushes constant stereotypes that damage society.

Yes. We are able to apply critical thought to that.

BenWillbondsPants · 15/09/2019 08:02

@LiveInAHidingPlace

Apologies, I thought you had a sense of humour for a minute there.

Crack on love ...

LiveInAHidingPlace · 15/09/2019 08:03

"Apologies, I thought you had a sense of humour for a minute there."

Really, do you call that a sense of humour?

How odd.

BenWillbondsPants · 15/09/2019 08:05

Someone on here is behaving like a massive cunt and it's not the OP.

Found them @Mookie81. Wink

Soontobe60 · 15/09/2019 08:05

The thing that gets me is that it's just one big advertising scam. The cost of a trip to one of the parks is absolutely extortionate. Walt Disney corporation set the first one up as a means of getting more money from children, fair enough, it's a business. But it's very exploitative. The employees are also exploited hugely.
To be fair, I also hate anything that uses targeted advertising to draw children in and make their parents spend ridiculous amounts of money, such as having the latest Xbox game, iPhone, trainers, hoody. Disney is the holiday equivalent of designer handbags. I.e. You pay a shit load of money for something that's worth at best a quarter of the price so that some clever business savvy person can make themselves even more money.

LiveInAHidingPlace · 15/09/2019 08:07

"Someone on here is behaving like a massive cunt and it's not the OP.

Found them @Mookie81."

Well aren't you two just an absolute delight. So mature and pleasant yourselves to be calling someone else a cunt.

If you're going to call me a cunt, just say it directly instead of being snide about it.

redappleandaquamarinebow1987 · 15/09/2019 08:08

@LiveInAHidingPlace people are able to think critically ans still enjoy disney. If this is your only view of disney I am sorry. To me disney is about the stories and happy place. We follow the main characters remain true and strong in spite of what happens to them and yes this include the classic princess movies. They are anything but passive victims and lessons of kindness even when it is difficult is an important lesson. As an adult it is a safety space. People choose how much they buy into it. Other then the odd disney item here or there it was not that much. It was always about the stories for me.

tryingtobebetterallthetime · 15/09/2019 08:08

You are trying to make a fool of me,which is totally unacceptable. Many people could match the verbal venom you seem to hold so dear. But why? Your attack and belittle method of debate is not effective. It is hurtful and nasty. If the world degenerates into similar discourse, heaven help us.

I don't think you are limited to this style of debate. You are very persuasive. I have expressed my respect for you.

Please try to stop this here. I respect your views. You express them articulately. In fact, I have said your views have merit. Please, no more.

All the best.

LiveInAHidingPlace · 15/09/2019 08:10

"people are able to think critically ans still enjoy disney."

And where did I say otherwise?

trying please just stop. I will debate in any way that I like. Just because you don't like it doesn't give you the right to tell me how to act. If it upsets you, feel free to step away.

BenWillbondsPants · 15/09/2019 08:11

If you're going to call me a cunt, just say it directly instead of being snide about it.

Gosh @LiveInAHidingPlace, why on earth would you think that I was referring to you?

As you say, how odd.

spaniorita · 15/09/2019 08:13

I wore Minnie ears when we took ds to Disney! I guess it's because I never had the chance to go when I was a child, we were dirt poor and it was always a dream to go. The people who could afford to go would come back having had an amazing holiday. When I got the chance to go, I was all for "getting in to the spirit" of it with ds. It's a bit of escapism and a bit of fun.

Some people like going out in fancy dress at the weekends - not my bag but equally not my business either.

Different folks, different strokes. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Ihatesundays · 15/09/2019 08:15

I’m another well educated and well travelled person who loves going.

DH and I used to talk about how we would hate to go there. We went on an all inclusive holiday once on a tropical island and hated being trapped in.

However for us Disney is like the best all inclusive in the world. You turn up, you get your magic band and all responsibility is removed.
You food is sorted, you need no cash, there is transport laid on. It’s massive and everyone is nice to you and it feels very safe.
I have only queued for a long time once.

LiveInAHidingPlace · 15/09/2019 08:15

"Gosh @LiveInAHidingPlace, why on earth would you think that I was referring to you?"

Well gosh perhaps because you made that comment directly after you started replying to me.

I assume you think you're being really cutting but you're coming across as a bit silly. It's quite cute really.

tryingtobebetterallthetime · 15/09/2019 08:16

Stopping here. Night night.

BenWillbondsPants · 15/09/2019 08:17

I guess it's because I never had the chance to go when I was a child, we were dirt poor and it was always a dream to go. The people who could afford to go would come back having had an amazing holiday.

I think this is probably true in a lot of cases @spaniorita. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. I said upthread that Disney isn't my cup of tea and although that's true, I would never try and make a fool of someone who does like it. Different folks, different strokes. Absolutely. 😊

MaryPopppins · 15/09/2019 08:20

All this "exploit their staff" what and who are you basing it on?

I'm friends with CMs in Paris, Florida and California.

All love their jobs, and certainly aren't exploited.

ERS25 · 15/09/2019 08:24

@Frangible yeah the waiting isn't always but but when just adults go you just chat and was about, have a laugh as I would if we were sat at a table somewhere 'having a beer' (I'm not a big drinker which is why it's in '', hahha). I imagine with a toddler it will be totally different but I know to expect that sometimes it will be great and sometimes I'll need to work a bit harder to entertain while in the queue. For my it's the adrenaline of the whole day, so queuing sometimes, I can deal with.

But I also agree it isn't for everyone. Someone asked me if Disney is worth visiting. I asked if they liked Disney, they said no, so I said probably not then. I'm going to Paris but if you like rides then Universal in Orlando is probably better.

redappleandaquamarinebow1987 · 15/09/2019 08:27

@LiveInAHidingPlace in your posts you seem to imply people who enjoy disney can't think critically. That people you enjoy disney can't enjoy Brontë or Shakespeare. I can enjoy both equally and do but if I am feeling down, under the weather, or need a pick up King Lear or Wuthering Heights is hardly going to be my first choice.

Also just because someone is happy clappy does not make them childish or simple.

If I misunderstood your post and wrongly took offence I apologise.

tigwig76 · 15/09/2019 08:45

I just need to point out that its DisneyWORLD in Florida (with a blue/grey castle) and DisneyLAND in Paris (with a pink castle).
Yes I'm an adult who loves both. The thought of going again fills me with excitement! I love theme parks and rides and Orlando is world class (although Universal Parks are far better imho)
I love meeting the Disney characters too and have spent hundreds on character dining. The first time I did this it was worth every penny to see the pure joy on my children's faces. I love the fireworks shows, they are truly amazing. I think it is possibly linked to being a child again myself! I did go several times throughout my childhood. It's my first choice holiday without a doubt. Just wish I had the money to go every year!

MaryPopppins · 15/09/2019 08:52

@tigwig76

If we're being pedantic then Disneyland is in California. (Also a pink Castle)

Disneyland Paris is France.

In any case I love them all. Smile

OtraCosaMariposa · 15/09/2019 08:54

Didn't take long for the "oh I'm far too intellectually superior to even entertain the thought of Disney" people to pop up. There is a large subsection of the population who really do think they are above it all, and that it's purely for the thickies who have no education at all.

Obviously they're wrong. Last time we were in Orlando the kids learned LOADS, although i wouldn't say it was an educational holiday. Epcot's world showcase gives you the chance to meet people from all over the world and when I was there they were teaching you phrases in all the languages. At Universal we got the offer of a behind hte scenes tour of the Mummy ride which was amazing - the guide walked us through the place, explained how they managed the queue, loaded the ride, how it was designed and engineered. We stood right underneath the tracks as people were whizzing past above. Awesome.

It isn't a "slog" either. The app tells you all the theme park queue times. We've also found they overestimate - tell you 30 minutes when it's actually 20. The attention to detail in part design is incredible too. I have never queued for more than about 40 minutes for anything.

And yes to Florida having so much more to offer - we had a fantastic morning last time on an airboat ride around the lakes south of Kissimmee, saw eagles, alligators, deer. And had a day at NASA too.

Mookie81 · 15/09/2019 09:08

If I called anyone a cunt directly I would have my comment removed and a warning. I know how to play the game.
If you think it's you, maybe think about why that might be.
