Aibu to think that they only cater for slim people.

I have clothes from Primark ranging from an 8-16, they are just very inconsistent

My theory is all the clothes are about a size 10. Previously I have tried on trousers that are slightly too small in a 10, tried the 12 - slightly too small, 14- slightly too small, 8- slightly too small. I couldn't get the trousers to got because the waist size wasn't changing. I think I went up to an 18 before the waist fit, I am normally a 10.

Of you are smaller than a 10 you probably feel their clothes are too big, if you are bigger than a 10 they are too small. Because they are all the same size really. If you are a 10 you are probably okay!

Yes, but you're still telling people that they are crap people for not doing what you say and going to charity shops whilst showing sod all empathy.

Option 1 in my area:
Get a bus to the local big town, go somewhere on the high street and pick up work new underwear and baby grows at an affordable price. Whilst there get something for the kids to wear until they grow out of and then the clothes get passed down to friends with kids.

Option 2 - go to smaller town, very few high street clothing shops due to high street decline, lots of charity shops which may or may not have items for the kids that you need, have to hope the market has a baby stall on for underwear and baby grows by they only run 3 days a week. End up with nothing and have to do a second trip.

It's a special kind of inconsiderate know it all who'd decide to have a pop at the person doing option 1.
But please feel free to patronise poor people in the UK and act like they don’t have choices or agency. It’s really helpful.
Oh give me a break. It's not about patronising poor people. It's about not being an arse to people for their choices in one area of their life whilst knowing nothing about the choices they've made in other areas of their life.

People who say "not to be that person... But I'm going to have a go" are just like people who say "no offence but..." And go on to be unkind. They probably also think they're just telling it like it is too

LolaSmiles · 14/09/2019 10:46

your snotty attitude is doing ten times as much harm as good.
Put much more bluntly that I did, but I agree.

SomeoneInTheLaaaaaounge · 14/09/2019 12:29

I’m so relieved, I always thought I was ballooning, esp when buying trousers from primarni...

When did they update their sizes please?

To be honest I have gotten a bit bigger every year, but have noticed how my sizing stays the same, so I can definitely see the vanity sizing.

Lucindainthesky · 14/09/2019 12:41

I think @Elision is on a different planet going on about Depop. I just looked on the website mistakenly thinking perhaps this was affordable fashion I'd not heard of. The very first item was a £250 skirt. Hahaha. I have clothes from Primark that I bought 10 years ago and are still going strong, tell me how there's anything wrong with that

LolaSmiles · 14/09/2019 12:45

Lucindainthesky
What's wrong is you're a terrible unethical person for even owning your clothes regardless of any other environmental choices you make.
Don't you know it's do simple to find exactly what you need when you need it in every charity shop

99problemsandjust1appt · 14/09/2019 12:45

Why is it shops can charge for kids clothes on a sliding scale for size but for adults it’s the same price whether you get a size 8 or a size 20 that’s literally double the material?

WrongKindOfFace · 14/09/2019 12:52

I find primark clothes are cut more for very straight up and down women - presumably because they are cheaper to manufacture that way.

There are always zillions on size 4 and 6 left on the shelves. Perhaps they could cut down on waste my making fewer teeny sizes and more midrange sizes?

Mummyoflittledragon · 14/09/2019 12:55

My 11 yo dd has some joggers from 4 months ago in an XS that obvs still fit and I recently bought some others in an M. She fitted the S but wanted the baggy fit. Yes, deffo inconsistent sizing.

@99problemsandjust1appt
Because there would be an uproar about fat shaming. Children otoh are supposed to have bigger sizes as they’re supposed to grow. Besides the majority of the outlay on clothing isn’t on the actual fabric. It’s pennies more expensive for and 8 to an 18. Some plus sizes are extra to the normal range clothes, or at least I think.

BarkandCheese · 14/09/2019 12:56

The name Primark has become a dog whistle for people who want to use environmental causes to bash others over the head, the same way Macdonalds was ten or fifteen years ago. If the OP had been about Tu, H and M, New Look, Boohoo, George, Peacocks, ASOS or any other lower cost clothing retailer I bet smuggy mc smugpants wouldn’t have posted.

WindsweptEgret · 14/09/2019 12:57

I don't have much from Primark, but they come up similar to other vanity sized shops like FatFace and M&S for me, they don't run small.

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 14/09/2019 12:58

Yes! I took dd in to buy a few bits for holiday. She's usually size 6-8. We gave up and went elsewhere when she couldn't do up a pair of size 14 shorts.

WaterSheep · 14/09/2019 13:02

She's usually size 6-8. We gave up and went elsewhere when she couldn't do up a pair of size 14 shorts.

This really surprises me. Like I said above i'm a size 8 and have to buy 2XS, which Primark describe as UK 4-6.

marshmallowkittycat · 14/09/2019 13:04

Yeah, the sizes are pretty inconsistent. Apparently they normally only get one Size 20 in each batch of clothes they sell, which might account for not being able to find this size. Anyone work in Primark and can confirm this as true?

IndigoHexagon · 14/09/2019 13:05

I think it’s more of a shape thing than a size thing.
For example - everything they sell clings to my belly - the biggest bit of me - but is baggy everywhere else - and that was true when I was an 18 and true now at 12/14!

amusedbush · 14/09/2019 13:08

I’ve picked up three pairs of the same Primark jeans in different colours, all in the same size, and only one fitted me. When I held them against each other there was about a 2” difference between the waistbands even though they both had size 16 tags on, were sitting on the same shelf and had the same name (‘high waist super skinny’ or whatever).

GabsAlot · 14/09/2019 13:11

theyre leggins now go up to 24 but their other clothes are 20 for some reason i got a nightshirt that was a 22 in their xxl range shame all their stuff doesnt go bigger

WindsweptEgret · 14/09/2019 13:12

She's usually size 6-8. We gave up and went elsewhere when she couldn't do up a pair of size 14 shorts. Could they have been children's? Though I find a girls' 14 is more like an 8-10 in most shops.

Oysterbabe · 14/09/2019 13:19

I find their sizes really big Confused I'm a 12-14 and their size 12s on me are usually big whereas my Boden size 14s fit perfectly.

I agree with those saying the clothes are shit though and I don't buy them anymore. Faded, misshapen and bobbled within a few washes.

SmudgeButt · 14/09/2019 13:24

It's cheap disposable clothing made by what is essentially slave labour. Better to buy ethically made quality clothing that will last so you don't clog up land fill. If you can't afford it from the high street stores then a charity shop might be a good alternative.

OK rant over....

Frankly I have never found anything at primark that will fit me other than socks. And I don't know any other shop that regularly has decently made affordable clothing anywhere in this country. it's as if larger women are all meant to wear horrid non fashionable polyester items - I hate clothes shopping!!!

transformandriseup · 14/09/2019 13:33

I find primark jeans are more for straight up figures. When I was a size almost everywhere primark size 10 shorts wouldn’t even go over my knees.

transformandriseup · 14/09/2019 13:33

Size 10 almost everywhere

Spaceprincess · 14/09/2019 13:41

Primark is so random. I once owned the same dress, different colours in a 10 and a 14, the 10 was marginally bigger...me and my sister once bought coloured jeans 10 years ago and neither of us could get our size 3 and 4 feet through the leg holes lol

Shelby30 · 14/09/2019 13:48

I find the stuff big in Primark. I wear mainly a size 8 sometimes a 6. I have a couple of size 4 things from Primark and actually I've been wearing them while 5/6 months pregnant. They do have quite a range of sizes though sure I saw a size 20/22.

doublebarrellednurse · 14/09/2019 14:02

My local store (Nottingham) has a really good selection of plus sizes and they are generous too, I was in a 22 when I was a 26 elsewhere. Now I'm a 12 when 14 elsewhere.
