Primark sizes

Aibu to think that they only cater for slim people.

Not to be that person but with the planet in the state it’s in, shopping at primark is up there with leaving the heat at home whacked up to 30 while you’re at work and then driving to the seaside to empty your bins straight into the ocean in terms of shitty selfish behaviour. If you have to buy that shit you can get it on Depop for cheaper and some sellers will measure the garment for you so you can make sure it will fit.

FizzyPink · 14/09/2019 09:24

The new primark sizing is a total nightmare. I’ve been wearing 8-10 knickers for years and now they only do 6-8 or 10-12 so either I now have a choice of them being too tight or worrying they’re going to fall down all day.

joblotbubble · 14/09/2019 09:24

Yep! Ds fits into the men’s t shirts and he’s 13!

That's not unusual at all though.

Sceptre86 · 14/09/2019 09:40

I find their sizing comes up big in adult sizes and their kids clothes are just right. I find h &m more on the smaller side though.

MaxNormal · 14/09/2019 09:53

@Elision I buy at Primark because I'm skint, not because I want disposable throwaway fashion. I've got Primark stuff that I've had for years.

Elision · 14/09/2019 10:03

@maxnormal you can go to charity shops or use depop AND save money. Do what you want but don’t try to excuse it.

joblotbubble · 14/09/2019 10:05

@Elision

Surely if max shops in the charity shop someone must have bought the item new at some point? No different to them buying new and keeping for a long time Confused

Moominfan · 14/09/2019 10:08

Ellison I agree fast fashion is just insidious. I buy basics from primark but eyes down avoid the rest. I know depop and charity shops aren't for anyone but we can all make little tweaks here and there to reduce the amount of crap that ends up in a landfill.

Moominfan · 14/09/2019 10:10

The amount of primark in charity shops and depop is ridiculous. People are buying and throwing away. Buying it second hand saves it from a landfill. I imagine the aim is less demand eventually less production.

I understand that. However the poster I specifically referred to stated she did not throw away her primark clothes and she shooed there because she was skint, and kept her things for many years.

I don't disagree with the sentiment at all regarding primark, but that one poster for a nippy comment saying she should use the charity shop, when actually, if you are buying to keep, new is absolutely fine, even from primark.

LolaSmiles · 14/09/2019 10:12

Not to be that person but
So totally to be that person but...

It's up there with "I'm not being rude but... No offence but..."

People shop there for a range of reasons. Some people have basics there and top up with other clothes.

People were discussing sizing. They didn't need preaching at about their lifestyle when they may well be making other decisions in other areas of their life (eg not owning a car, reducing plastic, dietary choices, holiday choices, etc).

Rocketpants50 · 14/09/2019 10:14

I brought size 10 adult jeans the other day for my 12 year old, she struggled to get them on over her ankles, the rest of it was massive on her. Has my daughter got massive ankles or is this just weird?

JagerPlease · 14/09/2019 10:14

Their sizing drives me mad. Went in the other day wearing a pair of size 12 primark jeans. Buy a pair of size 12 jeans, get them home and there is a 3 inch gap between the button and hole that I can't close. But yet their small (10-12) clothes fit me

WaterSheep · 14/09/2019 10:18

YABU OP, sorry but their sizes are huge now. Like other posters i'm usually a size 8 and now I fit into a XXS, they definitely don't just cater for slim people.

Elision · 14/09/2019 10:21

@joblotbubble it’s absolutely NOT fine to buy from Primark just because you ‘plan to wear it for a long time’. It’s not just about the article itself and whether it goes to landfill after one owner and one wear. It’s about the working conditions of who made it, the amount of water used to make it, the carcinogenic chemicals in the dying process that get pumped into local water supplies. It’s not just Primark, it’s ‘expensive’ high street fashion, as well. Not all of us can afford or even find sustainable clothes. Not all of us have the time to endlessly mend and maintain what we do have. But we can all go have a look around the bloody Oxfam before we go straight to a global planet-destroying chain store and buy something brand new. It’s literally the lowest amount of effort but still people find excuses not to bother.

LolaSmiles · 14/09/2019 10:26

Elision
You said not to be that person, but then all you've done is have a go at people.

A lot of the issues with Primark also affect many other high street stores, including ones that are more expensive.

But of course, when people have said they buy because they're struggling what they really need is a know it all pointing out what a shit person they are.

joblotbubble · 14/09/2019 10:30

@Elision

Great rant.

My deepest apologies for thinking someone who is on a very low budget should be allowed to buy themselves something new.

Maybe take up your cause with the people who treat clothes both high and low end as disposable items, rather than someone struggling to get by.

TroysMammy · 14/09/2019 10:30

Only their socks fit me perfectly. I have bought a couple of their lightweight jackets recently but that's it.

Groovee · 14/09/2019 10:31

They claim they have improved sizing. Usually need size 10 leggings but they 10 were so big and a 6 fitted me. My Dd is a 6 and I no way as slim as her. But some of their stuff is far too big for me after losing so much weight.

ChristmasFluff · 14/09/2019 10:33

They just aren't the right shape for me - everything is tight on the chest/waist, and humungous on the hips/belly/thighs

Elision · 14/09/2019 10:34

I clearly said that other high street stores including the expensive ones are just as bad. But please feel free to patronise poor people in the UK and act like they don’t have choices or agency. It’s really helpful.

BillywigSting · 14/09/2019 10:36

I tried on three of the same jacket in a size 12 in penneys a few weeks ago and only one of them fit. All supposedly exactly the same size and style.

It's not just the sizing that is all over the place, there are discrepancies within the individual sizes themselves.

cannotfindanickname · 14/09/2019 10:37

I find Primark come up big, but I only buy t-shirts and pyjamas there. Struggled recently to find pyjama bottoms that weren’t XL. Have recently lost a lot of weight, Currently size 14 and I agree about H&M. One of my targets is to lose enough weight that any of their clothes fit me!

joblotbubble · 14/09/2019 10:38

I'm not the one being patronising...

dollydaydream114 · 14/09/2019 10:42

@Elision You are possibly the worst ambassador for sustainability I’ve seen. The way you express yourself does absolutely nothing to persuade people to your way of thinking. If you want to actually change people’s behaviour and make them sympathetic to your cause, have a good old think about how you get your message across because right now your snotty attitude is doing ten times as much harm as good.
