To think iPhones are no longer innovative?

GabbyChalice400 · 13/09/2019 21:16

It seems like every "new" iPhone is just the same as the last, never really does anything new or different Confused

Is it just me who thinks this?

I switched this week from iPhone to google pixel 3a. I love it so far.
To the person asking about FaceTiming -never done it and never felt the need to.

dimsum123 · 14/09/2019 06:45

My phone is an Xiaomi android, £175 from John Lewis. 2 day battery life with normal usage. I love it! Great camera and very intuitive and user friendly.

Fatshedra · 14/09/2019 06:46

Yawwn...

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 14/09/2019 06:53

I remember when apple announced facetime like theyd invented the wheel... ignoring the fact video calling had been a thing for quite some time before that.

I use WhatsApp to video call my partner and son everyday when I'm at work. I used to have an iPhone but I much prefer my samsung.

Each to their own I say. But agree that they're not as "innovative" as they like to make out.

Jazzybeats · 14/09/2019 06:58

Phones generally are becoming more incremental and less revolutionary. They have to bring out something every year to hit their numbers but the reality is true innovation comes elsewhere, like the watch or the Samsung folding phone.

That said, my iPhone does the job it needs to do and does it well. However when I come to upgrade, it’s no longer a given it will be an iPhone... I just want something to feel “different” and the new ones always feel more of the same.

londonrach · 14/09/2019 07:01

Never had an iphone. One of my friends going to give me an old one one dayshe said. Happy with my samson till then. Cost around £50 and on plusnet sim only for £7.99. Unlimited phone calls, text, huge data package. I can give one month notice. Really dont understand why people lock them shelves in for two years. I like my freedom and can just leave

Autumnchill · 14/09/2019 07:02

I have an iPhone 5 because it fits in my hand. I moved temporarily to a Huawei but didn't like fingerprint was on the back not front and hated a droid interface on my car. Much prefer Apple car play

guiltynetter · 14/09/2019 07:06

I swapped from an iPhone to a Samsung s9 last year. even though the camera is so much better on it I find it very confusing and not simple at all. they don't make them easy to use which I guess is where iPhone have the advantage

londonrach · 14/09/2019 07:08

I use whatsapp when i video talk

Tonnerre · 14/09/2019 07:13

I tried a Samsung. Never again.

Tfoot75 · 14/09/2019 07:24

I switched to a Huawei last year, after consistent problems with crap battery life and shockingly bad camera on the iPhone. All of my family etc still have iPhones but we use WhatsApp instead now for group chat and video calling. Not a big deal. Previously I stuck with apple as I had iTunes music subscription but using alexa meant I needed to switch to amazon music, so no reason to keep an iPhone. Think the bubble has burst. Its great having a camera that actually works!

Tellmetruth4 · 14/09/2019 07:39

YANBU. I’ve got a 7 and it wasn’t massively better than my 5. The cost isn’t justified. If Jobs were still alive they would have brought out something really innovative by now instead of just fiddling with cameras. Don’t think I’ll bother to get a new version when my 7 dies. I’ve been weaning myself off apple products.

BertieBotts · 14/09/2019 14:38

We use Whatsapp and Duo to make video calls.

Fast you would just need a photo sharing/storage app to get that functionality back. If you can get Google Photos on an ipad, I find that really seamless and it's how I get my pictures onto the computer now.

I also dislike large phones so I specifically go looking for smaller ones. I have got the Sony Xperia ZX1 Compact at the moment and it's my favourite phone I've had in a while. Battery life is fantastic.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 14/09/2019 16:08

I’m kind of stuck with my iPhone now because I’ve now got an iPad and everything is synced between them through the cloud. Would just be too much of a hassle and a bit counter-productive to change it all again.

BarrenFieldofFucks · 14/09/2019 17:15

We use WhatsApp for that sort of thing, or messenger video. So many options other than facetime.

I have a Motorola G6, bought new for £170 something last year and still going strong.

pikapikachu · 14/09/2019 17:20

They've not been innovative for years hence why I don't upgrade to the newest iPhones any more. The features of each new iPhone are completely predictable - iPhone 11 coming in Green was probably the most surprising feature of them all 😂

It seems that foldable phones are the next big change to phones. Hopefully Samsung will nail it this time.

Rockbird · 14/09/2019 17:20

Here we go again...

Use what suits you best, be it Android or iOS. I detest Android phones with a passion, others feel the same about iPhones. Whatever. But some of these posts are silly.

BarrenFieldofFucks · 14/09/2019 17:27

I'm not sure why people get so defensive about iPhones?

Rockbird · 15/09/2019 09:34

Because people say stupid things like they're phones for the elderly or people who can't cope with anything complicated. You can't take arguments like that seriously.

I always ask on these threads what it is that you can do with Android that you can't do with iOS and I never get an answer. I've been a heavy user of iPhones for 11 years and have yet to come across anything that's been a problem. But there is still this myth that there are things you can't do.

Have a preference by all means, your phone choice doesn't affect me, but don't talk nonsense.

Oysterbabe · 15/09/2019 09:46

Take a photo of amazing quality. I'm no Apple hater, I don't give a fuck what phone people choose, but the camera is nowhere near as good as what is available as on other phones. That doesn't matter to a lot of people, it does to me though. I take a lot of photos with my phone.

donquixotedelamancha · 15/09/2019 09:55

@Rockbird

It's been years since I fiddled with an iPhone, so I am sure some of these answers are yes now, but some examples of my (entirely serious) feeling that they are frustratingly limited are:

  • can you do multiple users yet?
  • can you put an SD card in?
  • can you side load apps?
  • do they finally have file system access by usb?
  • can you change default apps?
  • is the home screen customisable?

There are advantages to apple's simplicity and uniformity, which is why I recommended one to my dad. A quick Google tells me that's a common perception amongst tech publications.

I think for most users needs they are very expensive for what you get.

BarrenFieldofFucks · 15/09/2019 10:46

iPhones are fine, I loved mine for years. But don't mistake good for 'worth the overinflated price tag'.

PettyContractor · 15/09/2019 11:40

I always ask on these threads what it is that you can do with Android that you can't do with iOS and I never get an answer.

Someone's already mentioned it, but for a huge difference between Android and Apple devices is the ability of Android devices to host multiple users.

There was another thread in which I had to agree with the OP what a nightmare it was to set up an ipad for a child when (a) it was the only ipad I had access to and (b) Apple's software absolutely required certain aspects of controlling the child account to be done from a parent account which (c) could only perform certain operation using an ipad (wherease the Android and Windows equivalents would have allowed a web interface) and (d) it is not possible to have two accounts fully installed on the same ipad at the same time.

I literally had to go back and forth installing/reinstalling parent and child accounts on the same ipad several times before it was fully set up. Nothing like the same pain was required to perform the same tasks on Windows or Android.

donquixotedelamancha · 15/09/2019 13:12

what a nightmare it was to set up an ipad for a child

That was one of the examples I'd heard although I genuinely presumed it would not still be an issue.

Fire OS from Amazon is quite frustrating and feels like using an android device from 5 years ago, but even that handles multiple accounts.

gamerwidow · 15/09/2019 13:19

None of the phones are that innovative really. We had a big jump forward at around iphone 5 and from then on it's just been tinkering around the edges. My iphone SE died recently (water damage) and I just bought a second hand iphone 6s to it replace for £90. I don't feel like any of the new phones have anything worth me paying more for.
