This doesn't surprise me. They've been feeding us false, misleading and downright untruthful information for three years and nobody's taken them to task for it. Of course they're going to keep doing it until the population stops acting like a bunch of hypnotised sheep.

PenelopeFlintstone · 13/09/2019 09:36

This is interesting because I’m in Australia and didn’t even know that our chicken is chlorinated until I heard about the process on here. Then I googled it.
I wondered why we don’t have all the health warnings that I read about on here, but it must be because ours is chlorinated. We do have some food warnings in summer, of course, but nothing like I read about on here. No tv ads about not washing chicken, for example.

MedSchoolRat · 13/09/2019 09:43

Food bourne disease is part of my job... I don't find chlorinated chicken at all bad, actually.

Antibiotics routinely used as growth promoters, GM food as standard, loose or no rules around hydrog fats in foods: these things I have trouble with.

Justanotherlurker · 13/09/2019 10:01

Where is all the outrage over chlorinated salads and veg?

YeOldeTrout · 13/09/2019 10:15

Lack of alliteration?

PenelopeFlintstone · 14/09/2019 03:46

And I quite like not worrying about chicken as much as the UK does, although I realise I might be misguided. Do people really snip their chicken with scissors into the frying pan, as I’ve read on here? Or not really in real life?

Greatnorthwoods · 14/09/2019 04:01

It’s a big deal over nothing, no other country has a problem with it

Polestar50 · 14/09/2019 04:18

The main issue, missed by posters above, is that chlorinating chicken carcasses means you can get away with much lower hygiene and welfare standards for the animals whilst they are alive. .

It's not just an ill informed, knee jerk concern about human health. Many people are concerned about the wider implications, particularly the impact on animal welfare.

It's about saying no to cheaper, low welfare, chlorinated chicken from other countries in order to protect our farmers who have to work to higher welfare standards. It's also about avoiding unnecessary animal suffering.

Urskeks · 14/09/2019 04:21

@46PenelopeFlintstone I used to, but now I snip it onto the chopping board because my fingers are too slow. Still beats chopping the ends off my digits though.

Pretty sure I'm going to stop eating meat again, soon. Might as well be eating processed quorn and tofu and more veg, if it's between one thing or another.

MeganTheVegan · 14/09/2019 04:22

All that stress worrying about additives, the risk of salmonella, not to mention the animal cruelty. Is it worth it?

countrygirl99 · 14/09/2019 05:59

Agree with Polestar. The chlorination is a cover for low husbandry standards and that is my concern, hence why I'm not bothered by chlorinated salads.

Bookworm4 · 14/09/2019 06:04

Just don’t eat it.

Fantababy · 14/09/2019 06:11

It’s a big deal over nothing, no other country has a problem with it

Clearly the other EU countries do.

Mummyoflittledragon · 14/09/2019 06:23

Animal welfare is already poor enough in the food industry.

rosydreams · 14/09/2019 06:26

you say dont eat it but it will bring down the cost of chicken.Put farmers out of business and then we will be forced to eat it

ZaraW · 14/09/2019 06:26

fullfact.org/europe/does-eu-say-its-safe-eat-chicken-rinsed-chlorine/

Animal welfare should be maintainedif not improved. If chlorinated chicken is allowed what other food standards will drop?

Bookworm4 · 14/09/2019 06:27

I’m a vegan and I survive without eating all this shite, it’s really not difficult to choose what you eat.

TumblingTumbleWeeds · 14/09/2019 06:32

Drinking water in the UK is chlorinated.

PenelopeFlintstone · 14/09/2019 06:35

As are swimming pools, which many Australians are in and out of all day! Is that why it didn’t matter to chlorinate chicken here?

rosydreams · 14/09/2019 06:37

i dont want to feed it to my children either .And good luck telling a fussy child we cant eat chicken. My father was vegan so i understand if thats your way of life, but i choose mine to

Wellmet · 14/09/2019 06:39

@penelpopeflintstone I'm in the UK and I don't 'worry' about chicken! Not have I ever seen an advert about not washing it. I just treat it the same as all raw meat.

I didn't know about the animal welfare implications, but I object to chlorinated chicken simply because food should not be over-processed.

rosydreams · 14/09/2019 06:40

for me its not the chlorine its the poor standard of care and hygiene. They have significantly lower standards

BillywilliamV · 14/09/2019 06:42

Well you see, a stand alone Britain won’t have the clout to stand up to the Americans. Still, this is what over half the country voted for...

YeOldeTrout · 14/09/2019 08:24

This document compares husbandry standards in USA & EU.
It's long & lacks a simple summary.
Does someone want to read & repeat here some highlights about animal welfare standards?
Otherwise I don't know what the evidence about different animal welfare standards says. A quick glance makes it seem 'six of one half dozen of the other."

tiredwardsister · 14/09/2019 08:33

Tumblingtumbleweeds Uk water UK isn’t chlorinated.
