Parking and Blocking Driveways

I am so angry about vehicles being parked in such a way that I can not get out. There are other driveways on my side of the street but no one else seems to have cars parking over their driveways.
I have heard that previous people in this house had multiple cars which is why there is a parking place on one side of the front garden and a driveway leading to the garage at the other side.
I got so fed up with being blocked in that I asked Police to assist. I sent them photos and some officers have called and seen the blockages. They did not do anything about the recent spate of parking. They may have spoken to one repeat blocker. I have to be able to go out when I need or want. I work and I have a child. I dont think I should be blocked in like this so often.
Do you think Police should have helped me to be able to go in and out of my property whenever I want.

Well where are they parking?

Shewhomustgowithoutname · 12/09/2019 02:20

Over the garage driveway and the parking place. Not often at the same time. There is no way to get from the driveway on one side to the parking space on the other side

Do they both have the correct road markings?

We have one neighbour who gets irate about his "driveway" getting blocked, but he's been told repeatedly that the previous owners didn't get permission for the work or dropping the kerb. There are no lines on the road therefore it's unenforceable.

TheSerenDipitY · 12/09/2019 02:52

so like in this picture? do you have dropped curbs on both the drive way and parking space? or do you drive over the gutter and footpath to get on your driveway and parking space?

Could you put a sign up? Is it always the same people?

Actionhasmagic · 12/09/2019 04:12

Contact the council and get the line painters in

TokenGinger · 12/09/2019 04:17

That's untrue. My kerb is dropped, as is every other driveway on my street but we have no lines, but the police do act if driveways are blocked and somebody is on it.

If your car is on the driveway and you cannot get out, the police with assist. They will not assist if you are not on the driveway.

RebootYourEngine · 12/09/2019 04:25

Do they both have dropped kerbs? It is not a legal driveway without dropped kerbs.

MarieG10 · 12/09/2019 04:34

If the area being blocked is serviced by a dropped kerb then you have a right of way and the driver of the offending vehicle has committed an unnecessary obstruction of the highway. The police can issue warnings, fixed penalty tickets or in extreme circs they can be prosecuted at court.

If the kerb isn't dropped then not much you can do as you have no right of way

You have a dropped kerb. Said person does not so it’s like any normal road.

LucieFurr · 12/09/2019 05:50

Maybe leave a polite notice on the windshield or have a chat to them instead of involving the police who have much more important issues to deal with. It would annoy me, but it wouldn’t enter my mind to call the police

flumpybear · 12/09/2019 06:11

As PP have said, leave a note on the windscreen
I'd also put up a no parking sign

Troels · 12/09/2019 07:57

Have you spoken to the PCSO our local one had words with a neighbour who parked on a blind corner all the time, he stopped after visit. Then a year later started again so she came back and spoke again. Now he uses his drive.

Jay0109 · 12/09/2019 21:04

Hi I know how you feel, i live around the corner from a train station and people always seem to park outside my house. Making it really difficult to get in and out of my drive. Police or council didnt want to know. So i bought a sign and fitted to wall nobody parks outside any more.

Sickoffamilydrama · 13/09/2019 18:01

Not sure how true this is you see we applied for a legal dropped kerb and driveway/parking in the front of the garden the highway people usually come and do the lines as soon as you get permission but every time they came people were parked on that section. So no lines for us!

I assume next they redo them all in our street they will sort us now it's a dropped kerb.

WarshipWarrior · 13/09/2019 18:04

Is it the same people? Are they neighbours? I'd park over your own drives for a while instead of on your drives see if that puts them off and they get the message.

WarshipWarrior · 13/09/2019 18:05

And 2 big "block this drive and you will be towed" signs may help

haveuheard · 13/09/2019 18:06

Police don't care about people blocking driveways in my area, even if they are blocked for days at a time. They say all civil traffic enforcement is the responsibility of the council. The council say it is the police.

lyingwanker · 13/09/2019 18:10

We had to call the police a couple of times when our car was blocked in on our driveway on a night. I was heavily pregnant and worried I wouldn't be able to get to hospital if I needed to.

We called 101 with the offending cars registration etc and the police got the drivers details and tried calling them and asking them to move. If this was unsuccessful they called a car removal truck to tow it away.

1stmonkey · 13/09/2019 18:33

NOT a police matter.
Council, landlords, get some cones, put up a sign.
The police have more important things to deal with.

Genderfree · 13/09/2019 18:50

If your car is on your drive and they are blocking you in, they are blocking the highway which I believe is a criminal offence.

Shewhomustgowithoutname · 13/09/2019 19:32

I have asked Police politely if they would ensure that I am not blocked in at the front and I dont think they actually spoke to those blocking me at the front.
There is an old base of a garage at the back of the property with the old gates still in place. Many times that was blocked. Police claimed to have spoken to the owner of the vehicle. It stopped for a while but tonight the back gates are blocked again by the same vehicle as before.
I would not have thought that ignoring police was a good idea.
I think this looks like anyone can park over any exit at my house and police will do nothing at all.
I do wonder if I have offended in some way. I feel a bit bullied and victimised. Maybe I am the only target as I am the only woman alone around here. Would they do this to a 6 foot all in wrestler?

OP posts:
Barneythedinosaur · 13/09/2019 19:36

You haven't answered if you have a drop kerb or not op
Also, I'd say it's unlikely it's because you're a weak and feeble woman Hmm

karenbokaren · 13/09/2019 19:39

Do you have a a drop curb? @Shewhomustgowithoutname

Templetonstunafish · 13/09/2019 19:49

So you have three parking places? Do you use them all consistently?
