WIBU- washing dishes under running hot tap

Just a heated discussion between dh and I now. Who fills their sink with hot water to wash the dishes and/or who washes each item under the running hot tap? I've been told that no one does it my way and he's gone off in a huff. Just curious!

@DontFeedTheCatCake no I don't put a squirt on every single plate. That's whst sponges are for. Most of my daily living is environmentally friendly but we can't be angels all the time

Gwenhwyfar · 12/09/2019 20:19

I wash under running tap because I don't have a double sink for rinsing.

Gwenhwyfar · 12/09/2019 20:20

"Do you put a squirt of washing up liquid on every single item? "

No, like the pp above, I use a sponge.

Gentleness · 12/09/2019 20:23

Why would you put a squirt on each item? A small squirt of fairy platinum on a wet sponge will do 5 cups, 5 bowls and 5 plates because it's not being diluted constantly in and out of water. Then rinse the lot over each other - takes less than a second per item, maybe 10 seconds.

Gentleness · 12/09/2019 20:27

And there'll still be soapiness left for half the cutlery or the pans. Which have collected the rinsing water and are quicker now to clean.

There seems to be a misconception that the tap is left running for about 15 minutes, full tilt, hottest setting.

RedPanda2 · 12/09/2019 20:28

For those handing wringing about 'the environment' how many DC do you have? Do you have more than a 1 litre car? Do you fly? Yes? Well I'll keep using running water then

DontFeedTheCatCake · 12/09/2019 20:32

Am genuinely curious , not being arsey, it seems that people are saying that using a running tap is cleaner. But the sponge is going from dirty item to dirty item multiple times without being 'diluted' by cleaning it in water inbetween. It's that right? I've never known anyone wash up under a running tap so am a bit puzzled, can you tell Grin

PumpkinP · 12/09/2019 20:36

Running hot tap, I’ve never actually heard of anyone doing it the other way!

RedPanda2 · 12/09/2019 20:38

@DontFeedTheCatCake honestly I personally don't think about it, it's just how I was brought up to do it. I normally soak the pots then clean them so there isn't much left on them by the time they're being washed via sponge. Someone I know piles all the pots up on the side and does them on Sunday. Not what I'd do but if she's happy then who cares Grin

DontFeedTheCatCake · 12/09/2019 20:59

1DC, car over 1 litre but was the most economic model in range (more so than the 1000cc model), and we rarely fly, we usually use the ferry. Hope that's ok Grin By the way, it isn't hand wringing, we are facing environmental disaster in case you hadn't noticed. Whilst the bit my family does isn't much in the grand scheme of things, that's no reason not to try.

Wash under tap, can’t stand putting my hands in a sink full of water, I do it quickly though

ineedaholidaynow · 12/09/2019 21:18

If you can’t face putting your hands in sink of water why don’t you wear washing up gloves?

I assume most of the people wasting water by washing under a running tap also have children, drive a car and fly.

wrcm · 12/09/2019 21:26

I fill the sink with hot water, partner washes under hot running water and it infuriates me but he's doing the dishes so i keep quiet Confused

MerryDeath · 12/09/2019 21:52

i absolutely shower my dishes, i do not approve of bathing them.. if i was bathing them i'd be rinsing them anyway so why bother. bathers who do not rinse, or worse, bathers who do not even rid them of superficial suds are the scourge of modern society and should be exiled.

MerryDeath · 12/09/2019 21:57

IF i was needing to conserve water i would do boat washing which is when you soap and scrub a sink load with nothing but a splash and a wet soapy sponge then your showering is purely a rinsing not a washing and rinsing in 1. this is one of many reasons why i don't like boats.

CookPassBabtridge · 13/09/2019 10:42

I used to fill the sink with hot bubbly water and not rinse, now I wash each item under a warm tap.

GladAllOver · 13/09/2019 14:28

Southern Water are advertising :

Never wash up again - modern dishwashers use less water than washing up by hand, as long as it's full up before you switch it on.

NailsNeedDoing · 13/09/2019 14:42

I suppose whether you see it as wasteful or not depends on whether you think things can only be cleaned by using clean water or not. I try not to be wasteful but I don't see it as wasteful when I run the tap to wash things because they need to be washed.

Washing up bowls and rinsing in still water seems to me to be a British thing.

ineedaholidaynow · 13/09/2019 14:55

How do clothes get clean in a washing machine when they are all washed in the same water?

DrVonPatak · 13/09/2019 15:00

A quick query by public health nurses discovered that tub washing is 10x more common in food poisoning cases. I'll just leave that with you.

I'm a dishwasher user, as, due to DH recovering from leukaemia, anything else is out of the question.

CassianAndor · 13/09/2019 15:34

Dr I'd like considerably more info than just accepting that "statistic" from you. By itself it's completely meaningless.

stayathomer · 13/09/2019 15:43

Dr I'd assume that's people who don't rinse properly after?

CassianAndor · 13/09/2019 15:56

I would assume it's people who don't wash up properly, or have sponges or clothes not cleaned regularly.

that's what I mean - completely meaningless.

Gwenhwyfar · 15/09/2019 09:16

"I assume most of the people wasting water by washing under a running tap also have children, drive a car and fly."

I don't have DC or a car and don't fly every year. I think the rinsing tap method is more favoured by singles actually. I would assume it would make more sense for families to have a dishwasher. At least if there are two working adults, many of you can afford a place with a double sink, which I can't hence the need to rinse as I go.

Gwenhwyfar · 15/09/2019 09:18

"But the sponge is going from dirty item to dirty item multiple times without being 'diluted' by cleaning it in water inbetween. It's that right?"

The sponge is under the tap the whole time.
