WIBU- washing dishes under running hot tap

Just a heated discussion between dh and I now. Who fills their sink with hot water to wash the dishes and/or who washes each item under the running hot tap? I've been told that no one does it my way and he's gone off in a huff. Just curious!

Very rarely wash up by hand but when I do then running hot water every time. I don’t like the thought of dirty water and thinking about it I’ve never seen any wash up in a bowl or in a sink full of water- everyone I know, including at uni where we didn’t have dishwashers in halls, does the running hot water method.

Mumofboth · 11/09/2019 21:57

I use running water too. I think it’s cleaner. I’m not about to feel guilty about the waste either, I’m careful in lots of ways but I’m not washing my dishes with dirty water.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 11/09/2019 21:59

How can dishes get clean all in the same bowl of water/ come to think of it how do you feel the soap off- run the tap!

flyingspaghettimonster · 11/09/2019 22:06

I put the plug in and some washing liquid, then wash plates and cutlery etc in the running tap and when sink is full of water put pans etc into soak. I don't have a second sink to rinse in so it wouldn't feel clean to uave just washed in the basin.

PointlessUsername · 11/09/2019 22:10

Running water.

The other way gives me the heebie jeebies

SteelRiver · 11/09/2019 22:15

I wash them under a running tap. Not the best use of water, I know, but I think it's kind of gross to do it the other way.

ColaFreezePop · 11/09/2019 22:19

As long as your rinse who cares.

Also you can wash under running water without being wasteful but as water is not scarce in this country, people tend to be lazy and wasteful.

Snowy111 · 11/09/2019 22:25

I really wish I didn’t read threads like this. How can people in all conscience be so incredibly wasteful Sad

I don't use a washing up bowl. I fill the sink with only an inch or two of very hot water and washing up liquid, wash a sink full of cleaner things, then rinse them under the running hot tap and put on the drainer. So by now the sink is half full. Wash the next sink full. Rinse under running tap and repeat. By the end, when you want to wash saucepans and oven trays, the sink is full of water. Rinse those last things over the half sink bit. I absolutely wouldn't keep the hot tap running for a whole session of washing up but I do insist on rinsing everything.

Yes, this is the right way to do it.

notso · 11/09/2019 22:33

Running tap with a dishmatic. I wet under the running water, turn water off, scrub, turn water back on to rinse.

DH used to go on about it being wasteful so one day I put the plug in and it didn't even fill the sink so no more wasteful than his way.

We have a dishwasher though so only a few things get hand washed.

CoodleMoodle · 11/09/2019 22:33

I fill a washing up bowl with cold water (usually the first bit of water from the hot tap and then topped up with some cold), and put it next to the sink. Then I rinse any really dirty stuff (e.g. plates with sauce on) under the hot tap whilst it's still warming up, then fill the sink and wash in the water. If the water starts to get really grubby then I drain it and get more hot water, usually continuing to wash under the tap as it fills up.

We used to live in a house with two full sized sinks, and when we moved here I missed my 'rinsing sink', but the washing up bowl is a good enough alternative! (At DM's I rinse in her half sink but it's so tiny and I find it more difficult.)

Malvinaa81 · 11/09/2019 22:35

Not that I make a point of watching people washing up, but I have never seen anyone wash up under a running hot tap.

If washing up by hand I would use a bowl of hot water and washing up liquid for "dirty" and "greasy" items, and a fresh bowl of water etc for more delicate items, and yet another for glasses.

So I use a dish washer- which I am told, but don't really know if true, uses a fraction of the water of hand washing up.

SachaStark · 11/09/2019 22:40

I boil the kettle a couple of times, so that the water is properly, properly hot. This is first thing in the morning, so we start the day with a dish bowl full of hot, soapy water. The “cleanest” things after breakfast go straight in.

When the water has cooled enough to put hands in, I wash the “cleanest” dishes, then chuck all the really dirty ones into it to soak for a while.

Remove the now soaked dishes, refill the dish bowl with hot soapy water, and wash them properly.

Rinse and repeat!

QuestionableMouse · 11/09/2019 22:42

Fill sink halfway, wash then rinse replacing the water as needed.

You can't get pots clean in a sink of manky water!

CaptainPovey · 11/09/2019 22:45

Dishwasher. Running hot water is wrong

FrauHaribo · 11/09/2019 22:47

Running hot water to rinse, water fills the bowl where the dirty dishes are being washed.

How would you rinse if not in running water?

It's very rare I don't have a dishwasher, solve so many problems.

I agree with above, arguing because you think your method is the best is pointless. If my DH was criticising my way, he would be given the dishes to wash for a year before I accept to wash even a spoon.

danadas · 11/09/2019 22:49

Both. I fill the bowl with piping hot soapy water, come back to it about 30mins later and wash in the bowl with the tap running and rinse under the tap.

CassianAndor · 11/09/2019 22:54

I never rinse, I do t think there’s any need. I use either unscented washin up liquid or something like Ecover. I rinse food off before I stick it in the washing up bowl, though.

stayathomer · 11/09/2019 22:56

Fill basin and wash that way but at times I've rinsed too. Over the years have watched how other people do it and find it so dodgy that some people seem to think leaving dishes with bubbles still on is okay. Although either way most dishwashers now use tons less after than washing up

goldopals · 11/09/2019 23:30

In Aus, we're taught from an early age about water conservation which includes not running taps unnecessarily. I remember educational video about not running taps while brushing teeth. As the tap ran, the pond visible in the window was drained and all the fishies slowly died

Rubyupbeat · 12/09/2019 00:58

Under running hot water. Saves the rinsing, as all done in one.

JudgyPantsAndAMartyrBra · 12/09/2019 01:00

Those who say a dishwasher is less wasteful, wouldn't the increase in electricity to run it offset any environmental benefit from using less water?

We are trying to reduce to waste we produce at the minute and are making more and more changes. I'd seriously look into buying a dishwasher if the are better for the environment and reduce waste.

SunshineAngel · 12/09/2019 01:09

I always fill the sink, unless perhaps there is one specific item I need, then I'll put it under the hot tap with a spot of Fairy on it.

DS thinks it's acceptable to rinse plates under COLD water with NO liquid, and then call them washed, which I think is disgusting. Obviously it's easy to spot he's done it "the lazy way" with some things, as there's literally just still the food on it, but other times if he does the dishes when I'm not around, and perhaps we've had something less messy, he does it his way.. so I always hate using the plates he's washed that I haven't supervised lol. I am a clean freak, but I do think that's vile.

managedmis · 12/09/2019 01:12

When people say 'running tap' do they mean that the water is running continuously?!

What a total waste of water! Just use a bowl?

Purpleartichoke · 12/09/2019 01:19

Running hot tap.
