To think that as long as people continue to read the Daily Mail and Express, this country is doomed

Written by the rich, who pretend to be concerned for the poor. And the really sad thing is, people believe what they read.

There's no denying that daily mail does well from hatred. There aren't any unbiased newspapers in the UK. It wouldn't be a problem if they didn't hold such extreme views.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 11/09/2019 13:17

The Guardian might be right on, but at least there isn't a cynical manipulation of the truth.

Yes it is. Just in a different way.

derxa · 11/09/2019 13:23

He speaks for us Grin

The Guardian might be right on, but at least there isn't a cynical manipulation of the truth.

Oh the naivety!

Jillyhilly · 11/09/2019 13:26

The Guardian might be right on, but at least there isn't a cynical manipulation of the truth.

The Guardian is very happy to manipulate the truth about men having penises and women having vaginas.

SerenaOverjoyed · 11/09/2019 13:34

Yes it is. Just in a different way.

Bias will be inherent in any media to an extent. I'll take the Guardian's manipulation over the Mail's deliberate lies any day.

CactusAndCacti · 11/09/2019 13:55

When the Express gets a weather forecast / prediction right I will hold the rest of the paper in good stead.

CherryForFirstMinister · 11/09/2019 13:59

The Guardian seems most dangerous of all right now!

RosesAndRaindrops · 11/09/2019 14:02

What @BuzzShitBagBobbly said.
Where do you stop going down that road? One of the great things about our country is the fact there's still a free press, as in there's more than one opinion available.
Yes, they have their own political bias, always have, but I'd far rather there were both views out there for people to make their own minds up than a censored one.

Glumpty · 11/09/2019 14:55

You can't avoid bias. But you can make ownership and interests transparent and mandate this by law. Have anyone who owns media or holds an interest in it publish their finances, companies they own, location of funds, donations to political parties made public.
That can then at least make interests transparent so false statements and bias can be more easily challenged and we can teach the next generation about critical thinking and having a healthy scepticism of those who hold power or have a loud voice - whether on the right, left or otherwise.

GibbonLover · 11/09/2019 15:36

I have to admit I do enjoy the Crusader crossword in the Express but the rest of it is tosh. The Daily Mail is a dreadful publication but you are being VVVU not to mention The S*n in your OP, that is the filthiest, dirtiest rag of them all.

I'm a Guardian reader myself and yes, it is biased. Biased towards my own political leanings certainly, but still biased. They do have some great photographs though, scroll down to the bottom of the home page and there's lots of galleries to enjoy.

aliensprig · 11/09/2019 15:48

The Mail isn't fit to be used as toilet paper.

Any tabloid using sensational headlines in capital letters to sell papers and get clicks are only good for the recycling bin.

Babycham1979 · 11/09/2019 15:58

Both utter shitrags, written to excite people's most base urges. The Daily Hate (see 1984 for reference).

While I'd never say we should ban the free press, we absolutely SHOULD regulate on foreign, tax-dodging, monopoly ownership. And don't get me started on flagrant law-breaking (phone hacking, anyone?).

PS, that utter scumbag, rabble-rousing, racist misogynist Richard Littlejohn is the Country's highest paid 'journalist'!! FFS

Meadowland · 11/09/2019 16:01

Sorry, only just been able to get back to the thread.
I think a few pps have summed it up for me when they said that there is bias (acceptable), and there is lies ( not acceptable).

Gone2far · 11/09/2019 18:23

so you're happy that the only paper to publicise what happened in Rotherham, and corruption in Foreign Aid not be published?

HandsOffMyRights · 11/09/2019 18:31

The Daily Mail reported the Jess Bradley expose when Carter Ruck gagged all other outlets.

It continues to report on the rise in young girls being forced down a path of transition.

And The Sun's superb piece here: is a strong piece of journalism www.thesun.co.uk/fabulous/7362652/changing-gender-new-anorexia/

Yet The Guardian continues to treat women like crap and peddle magica thinking, buying into gender ideology. As does the BBC.

Sakura7 · 11/09/2019 18:48

Some bias is to be expected, but when you have 70%-80% of the main papers putting (often extreme) opinion pieces on their front pages and calling them news, there's a problem. There needs to be better regulation.

I think a balanced, credible paper should report the news in a factual manner, and as part of any in depth analysis on a major story they should cover a number of viewpoints. There should be some kind of newspaper 'standard' or scoring system assessed quarterly/bi-annually by an independent body, and the results should be published in a prominent part of the paper in every addition. It would score on fairness, balance, etc, and state any bias the publication was found to have. Owners and senior management would have to declare any political interests (e.g. if they're a member of a party). It wouldn't fix the problem completely but would add some transparency.

Userzzzzz · 11/09/2019 18:55

They all have biases and different editorial slants. The bbc did an excellent recap of all the front pages following Boris’ first defeat. The differences were amazing. If you only read one you’d get a very distorted view of the world and public opinion.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 11/09/2019 19:00

bias (acceptable), and there is lies ( not acceptable).

One woman's bias is another's barefaced lie.

PrettyShiningPeople · 11/09/2019 19:05

Doomed in the sense that anyone who reads the Express must be convinced we’re about to be hit by a meteor.

PrettyShiningPeople · 11/09/2019 19:10

I read the Daily Star, Daily Mail, the Express, my local paper, the Guardian, the Metro, and Telegraph articles that don't hide behind the paywall.

Hide behind a paywall? Shouldn’t journalists be paid for the work they do?
And don’t expect to be able to read the Guardian for free much longer either.

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 12/09/2019 14:12

One woman's bias is another's barefaced lie.

And this is what has brought us here - not being able to tell the difference between option and fact. We have a government that is deceitful to the core and people are not bothered.

littlepaddypaws · 12/09/2019 14:21

for mners who slate the daily mail so much there are ALWAYS threads and links to stories and articles on here. just say you hate it to follow the herd and then you won't get bullied by others.
i don't read papers as i can't be bothered.

Figmentofmyimagination · 12/09/2019 22:53

In the 6 months before the Brexit referendum, One in every five tabloid front pages concerned immigration - and they weren’t celebrating what a great thing it is...

birdandroses · 13/09/2019 01:01

From mediareform organisation

“in the UK is right wing, Britain has one of the most concentrated media environments in the world. Just three companies dominate 83% of national newspaper circulation; five companies account for 80% of national newspaper newsbrand reach; five companies command 80% of local newspaper titles; and two companies own nearly half of all commercial analogue radio stations.”
