A colleague said this to me today, she wasn’t being unkind. I took it as a compliment but the more I think about it the less sure I am! AIBU to think this is something to be proud of?

Not really. To me, it means you're impatient and lacking compassion.

Jimdandy · 10/09/2019 18:40

I think it’s a compliment, means you don’t tolerate other people’s nonsense!!

ChangeOfTides · 10/09/2019 18:40

It’s not a compliment, is it? It means you’re impatient and rude basically.

Saddler · 10/09/2019 18:41

It's a complement imo

coconuttelegraph · 10/09/2019 18:42

Depends on the context but in general I don't think it's used as a compliment

73Sunglasslover · 10/09/2019 18:42

It can be a strength to be clear thinking but sharing your thoughts about others in a judgemental way is not a good thing. Do you think she meant this?

Depends on the mindset of the person giving the compliment!

ShirleyPhallus · 10/09/2019 18:43

I think it’s a nice way of telling someone they’re too bolshy and abrupt

Sparklesocks · 10/09/2019 18:43

I think it could go either way depending on who said it

Aikaterina · 10/09/2019 18:43

Not a compliment. To me it means that you are intolerant to those who don’t meet a certain level of intelligence

MrsTWH · 10/09/2019 18:44

Who does suffer fools gladly though?!

KeeperofthePeace · 10/09/2019 18:45

It's a compliment, it means that you see through people's nonsense and aren't easily fooled.

SlimGin · 10/09/2019 18:45

I've always viewed it as a compliment but not thought about to too much. To me it means you don't put up with people messing you about.

Chitarra · 10/09/2019 18:45

I think it could be said either as a criticism or in admiration depending on the tone.

Nuttyfellalovesnutella · 10/09/2019 18:46

I would take it as a compliment but it does mean than your tolerance levels are low. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. We are all different and we are who we are.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 10/09/2019 18:46

People who say this are the people who believe they also have this 'quality'. They think it's a compliment; it's not.

From my understanding it means that you are not happily able to manage/deal with the people around you.

It's from the same School of Bollocks as pride in "shooting from the hip".

31RueCambon75001 · 10/09/2019 18:47

Not a compliment!
Code for condescending unpleasant and impatient

WindsorDuchess · 10/09/2019 18:50

I got told this at an appraisal when I asked her to elaborate she said 'your eager to help others but if you don't feel like they're not pulling their weight you call them out on it'

So I decided to take it as a compliment

ShirleyPhallus · 10/09/2019 18:53

@LyingWitchInTheWardrobe is that the same school of bollocks that teaches “telling it like it is”?

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 10/09/2019 18:55

Yes, ShirleyPhallus, that was the other one I was thinking of and couldn't, thank you.

WarmSausageTea · 10/09/2019 18:55

I think it could go either way depending on who said it.

I agree; depending on context, it could be positive or negative. For me, not suffering fools gladly (in a business context) is a good thing, but a lot hinges on how the ‘fools’ are handled. As long as it’s done professionally, it’s not a problem.

Ounce · 10/09/2019 18:57

It's a compliment. The person who says it might not mean it as a compliment, but chances are they're a fool anyway, so who cares what they think? Grin

ChicCroissant · 10/09/2019 18:58

Not a compliment, I would take that as the speaker thinking you were noticeably rude to people you didn't like. They've said it because they've noticed.
