10mo 98th centile for height and weight

Hopefully you can help me stop worrying about this - my 10 month old ds is very very tall for his age, 98th centile. (There are a few six foot + men on both sides, but he’s apparently on track to be 6 foot 2 or 3.) But he’s also 98th centile for weight and I read that from age 2, if he was still on this curve he’d be considered overweight.
I was very overweight as a child and I’ve always said my children will never be allowed to get overweight, so I’m worrying about it.

I give him a very good diet so I know it’s quality food he’s getting, but I am stressing a bit. I really don’t want him to struggle with his weight like I did. Am I being ridiculous? Any advice?

As far as I understand it, if his height centipede matches there is nothing to worry about. If he’s longer he’s bound to weigh more. There’s more of him.

cardibach · 09/09/2019 18:45

Centipede? Centile

Nonagoninfinity · 09/09/2019 18:47

My daughter has always been on 98th centile since birth. She's now 12 and around 5 foot 6 and slim. He needs to weigh more if he's longer.

BikeRunSki · 09/09/2019 18:48

If his height and weight centile are the sane then he’s fine.

Also, 2 is a very long way off for him, but which time he’ll be walking (and running, climbing, jumping, and pretty much in to everything) and generally a lot more active. He may have dropped a nap, and a lot of milk too. Honestly, don’t worry, he’s fine, and within normal limits.

AllFourOfThem · 09/09/2019 18:49

I would talk to the nursery nurse who does his 12 mth review. It’s not always the type of food but also potion size and calories from drinks (I’m guessing from his age he still has a lot of milk).

How often have you had him weighed? Sometimes before a growth spurt, babies can have an inconsistent centile on their chart.

allthepeoplethatcomearound · 09/09/2019 18:49

You might find he puts in weight much slower once he’s on the move. My DD18months was 50th for both until she found her feet and has now dropped to the 25th

bridgetreilly · 09/09/2019 18:50

Stop worrying. 2 children in every hundred will be even taller and heavier than him. He'll be fine. Whatever you do, do not attempt to put him on any kind of diet now. He needs to eat when he's hungry.

MindatWork · 09/09/2019 18:52

Honestly OP I would rather have a baby who’s big - my 10 month DD is on the petite side (50th centile but still in 6-9 month clothes) and I stress so much every time I get her weighed.

Just be pleased he’s doing so well!

Plainandsimple · 09/09/2019 18:53

DS1 was 98-99th for height & weight all through his childhood and was a healthy weight, got a bit chubby around 10-11 but growth spurts in puberty slimmed him down again, now he’s adult & fine. DS2 was 95-98th for height but around 50 for weight & looked skinny, again was a little round faced pre-teen but is now a lanky & skinny 6’2” 15 yr old. I really wouldn’t worry, your DS is still only tiny and has lots of growing and changing to do, as long as his diet is healthy & balanced he’ll be fine!

Chitarra · 09/09/2019 18:55

At his age, the important thing is that his percentiles match. As you say, when they get older you need to consider height and weight together, but 2yo is a long way away and as others say his body shape will have changed a lot by then. He may well go through a fussy eating stage before then - many toddlers do.

Please try not to worry about this for the moment - mealtimes should be fun and he may pick up on your feelings of stress if you're too focused on how much he's eating. Keep giving him good healthy meals, no sweet snacks at his age, and revisit this when he's a bit older.

kilburnfrenchie · 09/09/2019 19:02

No need to worry now.- this is the age where they put on weight which then turns into height as they get older.
Some watch outs given your concerns as he gets older: contrary to common belief healthy babies/ toddlers do not need a bazillions snacks a day. Breakfast/ lunch/ dinner- maybe a small snack between brekkie/ lunch or lunch dinner depending on which are furthest apart. Outside of that nada. Except water if thirsty.
Nor do they need juice or anything to drink that isn’t milk/ water. And remember milk has calories- of course give him recommended amount - but not pints and pints.
No healthy toddler/ baby starves themselves. If they don’t eat a lot at a particular meal let it go. Do not fret and try to feed them more later. ( obviously if underweight etc different)
Lots of park time/ exercise time.
Model health eating yourself & as a family.

My son has always been 98th centile for both height and weight. I believe they are classed as under or over-weight if there are are more than two curves difference between height and weight.

AmIRightOrAMeringue · 09/09/2019 19:05

Was he born on the 98th centile and stayed there? That's fine then. They get more worried when they drop centiles. If his height and weight match then he is perfectly proportioned, it would be a but worrying if he was in the top 2pc for height but an average weight - he would then be underweight. Please stop worrying.

Thatnameistaken · 09/09/2019 19:08

My daughter (breastfed) was over the 100th centile as a baby and was a robust toddler who was bigger than children nearly a year older than her by 2. She was still tall and pysically mature for her age by 10 but from then on she slowed and her peers began to catch up. She's now 20 years old, 5'8" and 9.5st.

The 50th centile is the average. It's not petite at all and no reason to get stressed. My daughter follows the 2nd centile for height and 10th for weight and is perfectly fit and healthy ...just a short arse like me.

StillSurviving · 09/09/2019 19:13

My fab DS now aged 10 was on the 98th. He was 60cm at birth and I won't tell you how much he weighed ! (2 weeks late). He was just long and normal weight for the length - not fat, not skinny, just average.

He is now about 3rd tallest in his class (luckily in a class with lots of other tall children, so he doesn't stand out at all with them). He's slightly on the skinny side, and eats like a horse.

I'm sure your lovely baby will be perfect too.

Incidentally, I breast fed both sides each feed, then offered him a bottle. Quickly became apparent that he didn't need the bottle after a daytime feed. But by evening he was draining 6oz or whatever a full bottle is after the breast feed. So I dropped that feed and just gave him a bottle at the end of each day. You're possibly past that. But I just never wanted him to be hungry.

ive had this since birth,he was/and still is very greedy and born big

ive never had a hv as i opted out so have never been told "off" for him being to big or not following they rules/guidelines but i used to measure and weigh him myself and from birth he was putting on 2 to 3 pounds a week and growing longer very rapidly

hes just 9 now(end of july)and is 5ft 3(yes you read that right)and 130 pounds and in size 6(adult) shoes.hes in medium bottoms large tshirts,he doesnt look fat just very solid and built like a rugby player

he still on 8-10 pints a day and has 7+fresh home ccoked adult sized meals a day(neither kids sleep so are literally awake all day and night) but we put it down to his disabilities as he doesnt know when hes full and always hungry and as we home ed and can afford it he has as much food as he wants

im 6ft, dads 5ft 6 but grandad on dad side is 6ft 11 so we think hes
following him as ive a 6ft 2 15 y old as well(he was born 8lb 26 inches)

hes was born 10lb.10oz and 27 inches long(longest baby the hospital has ever seen) and loved his milk from first bottle, he sucked dry 3 hospital bottles in 1 go and it worked out at 11oz so from there was on a 11 oz per feed and by a few weeks he was on the hungry baby milk and was going through a full 17oz(a full 11 oz bottle and a 6 oz 2nd bottle)a time

at 6 months i put him on cows milk as i was going through 3 tins of milk a week and he was eating full dinners, he was going through 8+ pint a day a 3-4 meals

hes always been way bigger that his age

i gave up on percentiles very early as he was always over the 100 mark so really there was no way to measure him

if you think about it for every average kid/baby there is always going to be ones very small or very big for their age

Ihatefootball86 · 09/09/2019 19:37

My 4 month old is the same. 98th pecentile and legs like hams 😂 I was the same as a baby. I was too fat to crawl but after I started crawling it all fell off. ..I certainly wouldnt worry about it.

EmmaJR1 · 09/09/2019 19:43

My son was 98th at birth and 27 months later is still 98th. Very tall and I can see/feel his ribs!

It more sudden drops or spikes in weight or if they are far heavier than is average for height.

MRex · 09/09/2019 19:46

Mine was the same, now at 18 months and running he's 99.6th for height but between 75th and 91st for weight. Once they start moving they stop putting on much weight, plus winter viruses can have a small impact. I don't think you need to be worrying right now, take a look again once he gets nearer to 2.

Oneborneverydecade · 09/09/2019 19:52

Mine was off the chart within weeks of being born and stayed there. He's now 12yo and 6ft 2, he's never been skinny but he doesn't look overweight. We had letters telling us he was overweight and ignored them. If he was the weight of an average 12yo he'd be emaciated

LakieLady · 09/09/2019 19:55

My daughter has always been on 98th centile since birth. She's now 12 and around 5 foot 6 and slim.

I was 5'6" and slim at 12.

I'm still 5'6" but, sadly, no longer slim. Grin

Trafalger · 09/09/2019 20:00

My daughter has always been 98th centile for height and weight. She is 2.5 and in age 3-4 and 4-5 age clothing. She has size 9.5 feet! I do not have concerns but the HV has been on and on about her being overweight looking at the nhs bmi. It gets very upsetting. We have kept a very honest food diary for her as she does eat a very varied and balanced diet but still the HV says she is overweight according to bmi. I know some people can be blind to their child being overweight but she just looks like a normal child. I can see her ribs. When she is due a growth spurt she does suddenly look very chunky but then she will shoot up in height and it all evens out again. She is bigger than all of the 3 years olds at her childcare and most of the 4 year olds.

funinthesun19 · 09/09/2019 20:08

I have a question. What if the weight and height is the same but the head circumference is higher? This is the case with my baby and I’m a bit concerned. Is this normal?

tigger001 · 09/09/2019 20:08

I can understand your worries, although mine are the reverse my son is petite and small he is 2 and in 9-12 month shorts and trousers, but there always has to be a child on the larger scale and one on the smaller.

I think if the centiles match then he's just going to be a big lad, like others on your family. Don't restrict food or drink at this point until you have spoken to a professional who can advise you what's best.

I'm sure he will be fine, our HV said its more to do with common sense if you see ,little me and my average DH walk in with my little boy then it's almost expected, and if you see big mum and big dad walk in you expect big baby to follow, try and relax (although I know easier said than done )
