a colleague says iabu. apparently it's reserved for vegan colleagues Confused

I'm neither vegan nor vegetarian.
the vegan option is usually very impressive and tasty. the chef is really creative and the food is very very good.
I want to reduce animal based foods.

sooooo aibu to eat it?

Assuming it’s not a pre ordered meal you’re taking, then it’s fair game. They’ll soon increase the amount of portions they make if they start to run low regularly

AforEffort9 · 09/09/2019 14:37

No, eat what you want.

Ponoka7 · 09/09/2019 14:37

As long as there is enough for any Vegans etc (Vegan options are also halal etc).

One of the mpst annoying things is meat eaters not ticking a vegan/vegetarian option, if asked and then eating the non meat options.

Comefromaway · 09/09/2019 14:37

Dd isn't vegan but she often chooses vegan/vegetarian options at school/college. Often it looked nicer and healthier than the alternatives.

GeePipe · 09/09/2019 14:38

Your colleague is silly. Supply and demand. The more people want it the more will be made.

Redglitter · 09/09/2019 14:38

Course you're not. Unless they ask in advance who's vegan/vegetarian and only cook a specific number they're there for anyone to try

Subeccoo · 09/09/2019 14:38

Urgh I was refused vegetarian sausages by our school dinner lady as she's seen me eat chicken before. I mean that's not the same really but thanks for making my choices for me.

yearinyearout · 09/09/2019 14:38

Your colleague is being ridiculous. Eat what you want and they will make extra vegan option in future if more people choose it.

PurpleDaisies · 09/09/2019 14:38

It’s fine, as long as you don’t specify in advance what you’re supposed to be having. It would be better if more people chose the vegetarian or vegan option. The law of supply and demand says if it’s popular they’ll make more-look how mainstream veggie/vegan stuff is now.

Littlechocola · 09/09/2019 14:39

Colleague is bonkers.
Tell them that you are vegan today.

redchocolatebutton · 09/09/2019 14:39

it's a self service
no sign saying that it's restricted.
today's pilau stuffed peppers were very tasty indeed

Of course YANBU. Hopefully the chef will realise how popular their vegan options are and just make more on following days. All the vegans I know would love it if everyone else ate no/less animal products, so they would be pretty off to then moan about people choosing to do just that, even if just for 1 meal.

scittlescatter · 09/09/2019 14:40

Yanbu

I'm vegan and want to see more people choosing vegan options. It's good for animals and the planet.

If there isn't enough vegan food then that's an issue that the colleague should take up with the canteen. It's easily rectified.

Northernsoullover · 09/09/2019 14:41

I'm not veggie but I don't eat meat unless I have cooked it myself so I always choose the vegetarian/vegan option when in university. Am I supposed to go hungry?

SallyLovesCheese · 09/09/2019 14:41

If it's the kind of canteen where the dishes are laid out and you go along and choose what you want and they serve it up for you, YANBU. You can choose what you want.

If the canteen constantly end up with lots of meat main courses left and people asking for veggie/vegan then they'll realise they need to provide more of the latter. Hopefully.

Mxyzptlk · 09/09/2019 14:42

Yanbu, as long as it's not restricted.
I am vegan, btw.

BarbaraofSeville · 09/09/2019 14:42

YANBU. Just because you eat meat sometimes, does not mean that you have to consume it for every meal.

Humans are omnivores, not carnivores, but some people are really odd about a meal not being a meal unless it has meat in it and think that people would only eat a meat free meal if they were vegetarian or vegan and their food is special weirdy food just for them, not just normal food that happens to not have meat in it.

I'm not vegetarian but have lost count of the number of times that choosing a normal meal that happens to be meat free leads to comments of the 'I didn't know you were vegetarian' variety.

Gruzinkerbell1 · 09/09/2019 14:44

Most vegans would be delighted that an “omni” enjoys the vegan options and by default is lessening their meat consumption.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 09/09/2019 14:47

Yanbu. I eat vegetarian or vegan meals 80% of the time, I also eat fish and very occasionally I fancy meat So what. Your choice, however I too was refused a vegan option in a local Fullers pub as the week before I’d had the veggie option which had mayonnaise in it. Hopefully these establishments will produce more of the vegan option if they are becoming popular.

PurpleDaisies · 09/09/2019 14:49

Your choice, however I too was refused a vegan option in a local Fullers pub as the week before I’d had the veggie option which had mayonnaise in it.

On what grounds? Had they sold out of the vegan option? How on earth did they remember what you’d ordered from the week before?

redchocolatebutton · 09/09/2019 14:53

maybe they should make the vegan option less appetising ShockWink

the chef really knows what she is doing and her cooking is very colourful and tasty.

lvsel · 09/09/2019 14:53

Shes a busy body so what if you want vegan food. You can eat what you want

PurpleDaisies · 09/09/2019 14:55

It shouldn’t even be called vegan food. It is just food.

sugarbum · 09/09/2019 14:56

Such bollocks. Unless you are required to specify in advance, and then change your mind. That's not on.
Its a canteen. You choose your meal and pay for it. End of.

littlepaddypaws · 09/09/2019 15:01

i'm in transition to going over to vegan from being veggie, so i love trying new vegan foods. i'd ignore anyone who said what your colleague said to you op, unless it was stated as reserved for a particular person.
