a colleague says iabu. apparently it's reserved for vegan colleagues Confused

I'm neither vegan nor vegetarian.
the vegan option is usually very impressive and tasty. the chef is really creative and the food is very very good.
I want to reduce animal based foods.

sooooo aibu to eat it?

Tumbling

Why on earth do you not say anything? It's not really the same situation, a small family group, as a canteen.

You can ask your family not to touch the only vegetarian pizza until your DS and you have had enough.

If they don't agree to that, next time you tell them to order a better mix of pizzas and repeat that you are being short changed.

If none of that works, the next step is to hit them with the pizza cutter.

Veggie (trying to be vegan) here, if veggie and vegan options run out it means it's getting popular and it will become more mainstream. I think that's a good thing, so I wouldn't mind, and if it's tasty encourage others to try it!

Valanice1989 · 09/09/2019 19:51

If someone is planning to eat a plant-based meal, and a vegan tells them to eat animal products instead, said vegan has just cancelled out their own veganism! Own goal.

Butchyrestingface · 09/09/2019 20:11

Can you imagine 'sorry sir, there's no meat on the menu today, it's not popular enough to justify anymore.' grin

That would make sense if most people are making a beeline for the measless options. No business is gonna keep serving something that doesn't get eaten, surely?

Uniformuniformuniform · 09/09/2019 20:17

People who eat meat don't have to eat meat every day. Your colleague is crackers

where my husband works all events are catered for with entirely vegan and gluten free food. he works as a civil engineer so not some trendy hipster outfit.

Teddybear45 · 18/09/2019 11:57

At my workplace the vegan / veggie option is not displayed so you have to ask for it. This is fairer because once a vegan / veggie option is gone a carnivore can still have lunch but the vegan / vegetarian then can’t and that may mean going hungry depending on the location.

redchocolatebutton · 18/09/2019 12:06

so far the vegan option has not run out.
today will be vegetable curry - looking forward to it

Vilanelle · 18/09/2019 12:21

I often choose vegetarian and vegan options. I am not veggie though.

I think if you took the last vegan option then a vegan had nothing to eat it would be unfair. But what you need to remember is veganism is a lifestyle choice, not a medical condition (prepares to be flamed lol)

Teddybear45 · 18/09/2019 12:27

@Vilanelle - the vegan option is what a lot of lactose intolerant people ask for at work when they want to keep their condition quiet.

If it never runs out, what's her issue? Like I said before the more people eat the veggie options, the more veggie options they will have, it's a good thing for veggies/vegans

MuminMama · 18/09/2019 13:24

YANBU. That is mad. The less meat people eat the better, and you can choose to be vegan for one day or one meal.

Purplejay · 18/09/2019 13:28

Your colleague is bonkers. Choose the vegan option. If demand increases they will make more!

redchocolatebutton · 19/09/2019 12:59

pumpkin & leek curry today
sounds weird but was very nice indeed

IHaveBrilloHair · 19/09/2019 15:29

It sounds good to me, Id try it.

Di11y · 19/09/2019 15:48

surely they just make more if it starts getting popular. yanbu

verticality · 19/09/2019 15:52

YANBU, and I don't know a single vegetarian or vegan who would disagree! Most of us want people to reduce the meat they consume. Smile And the more people eat it, the more they will order in, surely?

Chouetted · 19/09/2019 15:58

I'm lactose intolerant, so I often choose the vegan option as it's the only guaranteed safe option... but if I eat meat and mayonnaise sometimes, that doesn't negate the lactose intolerance.

Not sure what I'd do in a situation where vegan food was restricted to vegans. Not eat?

AreWeAnywhereNear · 19/09/2019 19:31

YANBU at all.

I'm a meat eater but trying to reduce my intake of meat, today's been a pescatarian day for me. When I go out I'm tending to lean towards the vegetarian/vegan options as I think they're more creative and then try to recreate them at home.

Surely we should be encouraging people to chose the vegan/veggie choices. Your colleague is bonkers Wink

TriJo · 19/09/2019 19:37

I'm veggie, I love seeing non-existent veggies try meat free options. Good for the environment and increased demand means more options in future.
