I've just got a kitten after not having pets for years, it's gorgeous obviously but I'm very conscious of my house smelling anyway and now it's been here 24 hours I can definitely detect a faint smell when I come into the room it's in 😩

I usually use scented candles but there's no where high up to put them and I'm worried he'll get at them, I use plug ins but really don't like potent ones, but I want the room to actually smell like them if you know what I mean, I'm not really a big fan of sprays, they really get up my nose and I am sensitive to them sometimes get migraines from them

I don't want anything too expensive but am willing to pay a bit more if it's going to work, so what do people recommend? Plug ins, Melts, oils, defusers? I like musky vanillary sort of smells in the interest of being thorough I hate lavender and flowery smells! 💃🏻 thanks :)

Reed diffusers are my favourite. Is it the litter tray causing the smell though? I’ve always had cats and I’ve never noticed an odour from them, even at the kitten stage. My DM would be sure to point it out if there had been a smell Grin

Trafalger · 08/09/2019 19:44

Opening a window. Its free and will make everything smell clean.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 08/09/2019 19:49

Incense.

Open windows.

Put cotton wool balls soaked in essential oils in your hoover bag/drum.

Lots of plants - leaves soak up smells.

If you have pets it'll always smell a bit of 'pet' regardless of what you do. As long as it's not overwhelming it really isn't a problem.

I really stress about plug ins. I'm scared they're going to catch fire. And they give some people headaches.

girlfromspace · 08/09/2019 19:51

It's not allowed out yet we've literally just got it today so while I am alternating opening windows when it's in different rooms that's not too practical at the minute due to it escaping, also, opening a window won't make my room smell of vanilla 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

No it's not the litter and to be honest i could well be imagining it as I'm a bit paranoid about my house smelling even before kitten so in all likely hood it doesn't smell

I'll have a look at reed things, do you find the smell reaches the whole room?

Why is your kitten smelly ? A cat that is well does not smell ( actually if I put my face to mine she smells a little like leather - not unpleasant at all )
I agree that kitten poo is the worse, but that will improve greatly as time goes on .
Remove poo from the litter tray as soon as they do it . Be very wary about plants in case they are poisonous , and if you don't already know lillies are a complete no no .

DontGoIntoTheLongGrass · 08/09/2019 19:59

Satya Assorted Incense, 12 Boxes, 15 g each box

From amazon, incense sticks. So amazing. Get a little holder for them too. I love lighting them every evening and it really gets round the house. We have 5 cats and none if them bother it.

Just don't call them incest like I keep doing! "God I love the smell of incest!" 😱

ZeroFuchsGiven · 08/09/2019 20:01

I really would be more worried about why your kitten smells. My cat has just came home after a 2 day holiday to god knows where and he smells of grass, other than that I've never noticed a smell.

Stormwhale · 08/09/2019 20:02

Reed diffusers are poisonous to cats so I wouldn't do that.

A quick spritz with fabreeze should keep things fresh. Do the curtains and have the windows open to waft it round.

Wavingwhiledrowning · 08/09/2019 20:02

This is a favourite topic of mine! I became completely obsessed by eliminating the cat litter smell from our house. I've beaten it by using an air purifyer (you can get fairly small ones for a reasonable price on amazon) and a 3-volution plug in specifically for pet odours. Job done!

liviadrusilla · 08/09/2019 20:04

Please be careful with reed diffusers in the kitten's room, I think they are harmful to pets if they eat them (and if any oil gets on it it will ingest it when cleaning itself). Plus if the kitten can get at them they will probably claw them out of the bottle and the oils damage surfaces. We used a pet smell eliminating plug in, it worked well - I think it was ambipur. I sometimes put a cotton wool pad with a little scent in the hoover but again do check that won't hurt the cat.

DontCallMeShitley · 08/09/2019 20:09

Don't use reed diffusers, they have been known to damage pets as they are toxic.

You also need to be aware that fake flowery smells and additives can cause breathing issues with pets and people.

Is it the kitten or the litter that you can smell? If it is wood or corn based litter it will have smell, corn tends to be the least pleasant, if it is clay it is best not to use it as it can be licked off paws and swallowed, forming a blockage in the digestive tract which, if not noticed, could kill the kitty.

Thanks for the replies

Just to ease everyone's mind it doesn't really smell, I'm just paranoid of smell, it did a poo and we removed it immediately but obviously the smell lingered a bit but has now gone, other than that it basically doesn't smell except the room has an extremely faint smell of puppies, we used to breed puppies when I was little and that's the closest I can describe it, not unpleasant but just a very very faint smell of animal

I think I will try incense, except all I know of them is going into hippy shops as a kid and them smelling all the same and strong! Do they do different scents etc

I'm now paranoid about all my plug ins so have gone round and removed them all so I don't have a house fire, and I won't use reed diffusers if there's a risk!

Haha, I just started a new thread about wax melts OP. Maybe you should look into them.

funnylittlefloozie · 08/09/2019 20:15

The Aldi reed diffusers and room sprays (the Jo Malone knock-offs in the black and cream packaging) are really nice, and last a long time. Plus, they are cheap enough to replace every other week!

JennyCarrots · 08/09/2019 20:18

I have a huge dog that can get smelly. I use wax melts (Glade ones are good in cheap in Home Bargains). I also use a freshening foam on the rugs which helps a lot.

missbattenburg · 08/09/2019 20:18

Another vote for removing smell rather than trying to mask it.

We've recently discovered Attitude Furry Friends Natural Pet Odour Absorbers which are working a treat against the smell of three dogs...

Dollymixture22 · 08/09/2019 20:19

Kitten picture please😺

Girl or boy? You can’t keep calling it it.

AsTheWorldTurns · 08/09/2019 20:22

Baking soda sprinkled everywhere (you can buy a big bag at Ocado) + open windows.

TroysMammy · 08/09/2019 20:24

I haven't had a cat for 3 years and got my kitten yesterday. It's the food, Whiskas stinks. His food is in the kitchen and the litter tray (wood pellets) is in the shower room, off the utility room and it's not that.

IfIKnewThenWhatIKnowNow · 08/09/2019 20:27

I have a dog and 3 cats, plus a teen makes for not the freshest house 😂
I swear by white vinegar mixed 50/50 with water in a spray bottle - it elimantes all odours. I spray the carpets and furniture daily.
Once a week I sprinkle bicarb over the carpets and leave overnight before hoovering.
I then have my normal air fresheners. My house smells lovely 😊 good luck!

Doobydoo · 08/09/2019 20:27

You can get things you put on lamp bulbs I think..they are fragranced and smell is released. May need to google..

BobTheFishermansWife · 08/09/2019 20:30

Vanilla extract rubbed into the curtains?

EmperorBallpitine · 08/09/2019 20:31

My house always seems to have odd smells. Kids, cats, lazy adults. I open windows, but for extra aroma I have reed diffusers in the toilets. We have some nice high window sills so I can keep them out of everyone s reach.

girlfromspace · 08/09/2019 20:33

Yes I actually think it could be the food!

It's my little boys he's called it gumball 😂 I'll attach a picture if I can but it doesn't do justice to it's cuteness! I think I will try an eliminator as well in the kitchen and something scented in the lounge, I seem to recall something that goes on bulbs too I might look into that

Thanks for all the replies :)
