I've just got a kitten after not having pets for years, it's gorgeous obviously but I'm very conscious of my house smelling anyway and now it's been here 24 hours I can definitely detect a faint smell when I come into the room it's in 😩

I usually use scented candles but there's no where high up to put them and I'm worried he'll get at them, I use plug ins but really don't like potent ones, but I want the room to actually smell like them if you know what I mean, I'm not really a big fan of sprays, they really get up my nose and I am sensitive to them sometimes get migraines from them

I don't want anything too expensive but am willing to pay a bit more if it's going to work, so what do people recommend? Plug ins, Melts, oils, defusers? I like musky vanillary sort of smells in the interest of being thorough I hate lavender and flowery smells! 💃🏻 thanks :)

God I asked this once on here and the majority of responses were to open windows even though I specifically said that I already did that and it wasn't what I wanted.

Also, cats smell like cats. If you don't have one, then you can smell them. It's not unpleasant but I'm hardly going out looking for eau de cat.

My mam had an enclosed litter box which helped massively with the smell. And a can of febreze to hand.
She used to use a lot of natural cleaning products but she was a little OTT at times.

My top tip is lavender essential oil, on a cotton pad, down the back of the radiator. Works best in winter when the radiator is on obviously.

If it’s the food, you can get a motion sensor feeding bowl.

My little monster uses one on the summer, she is a grazer and it keeps her food fresh. Also cuts down on the smell

I keep a spray bottle of vinegar and spray a fine mist into the air. It smells of vinegar for a few minutes and then the room smells good.

Some people like to add a couple of drops of essential oil, but I have an intense fragrance allergy so I stick to plain vinegar.

Gorgeous Kitten

NemoIsLost · 08/09/2019 21:32

I use Pet Odour Elimination Candles from "Mutneys" The vanilla one is lovely and fills the whole house.
I also use an air purifier. I have 2 cats and a dog and nobody says the house smells. My mother would certainly tell me if it didGrin

MissCherryCakeyBun · 08/09/2019 21:37

Please be aware that essential oils are mostly poisonous to cats. So the air diffusers etc are also a bad move as the particulants in the air can give them breathing problems

With the naughty 2-some we rehomed a month ago we have the same issues with smells but continual poop scooping helps

Also I was reading some very bad things about incense recently- apparently it releases particles which can cause cancer!

I like vanilla-type smells too, but I'm just not keen on filling the air with chemicals - it can't be good for you (or your cat).

Cakeorchocolate · 08/09/2019 21:46

My new favourite is reed diffusers.

I have 2 cats and had no idea they're toxic to them.

I presume only if they ingest something though? Not just in the air right?

Please tell me if I'm wrong those of you in the know.

YesQueen · 08/09/2019 21:48

I use candle wick greens wax melts, and then have feather and down diffuser in the bedroom and savile row company ones in the bathrooms
My cat doesn't climb though so no danger of him reaching anything!

My friend swears by some zoflora on a cotton hankie down the back of her radiator and her house always seems lovely.

I got a kitten a couple of months ago. I find a good quality food really helps with poo not being too smelly and also a good litter to cover it. I can’t smell his poo unless I’m right next to his tray when he goes. My kitten is on applaws dry food and I use Tigerino Canada litter. He did have wet food too but now won’t eat it. He came to me on felix and the first poo he did here smelled absolutely awful!

AlpacaGoodnight · 10/09/2019 20:33

This might sound weird but it just doesn't smell of family yet! It's like someone elses washing smelling different to yours! Give it a few weeks and you will adjust and you will be 'family' then it's just the litter tray to contend with!

RavenLG · 10/09/2019 22:07

I don't know much about cats but would have thought that reed diffusers wouldn't be good if the cat jumps up and tried to rub on it / lick it / chew it. Then all the other crap, wax melts, plug ins, air freshener they're all full of stuff we probably shouldn't be breathing in.

Remove the source of the smell and crack the windows, then open fully when she is allowed out / able to be out.
