I’ve f***ed up. What now?

My son starts reception tomorrow. I’ve ruined his hair.
He never sits still for barbers and hates going there, so I took myself off to Tesco, handed over £25 (which incidentally would cover 3 professional haircuts in my area) and left with a set of clippers. Can’t be that hard right?
Armed with youtube tutorials and a misjudged confidence I cut his hair.
It’s terrible. There is no time to make it right. He starts school in the morning. AIBU to lie and say I took him to a terrible hairdresser who I’m considering suing? Confused

No don't lie, they'll ask you which hairdresser it was!

Most people are too wrapped up in their own kids to notice, nobody will say anything.

Mouikey · 08/09/2019 19:04

If it makes you feel better, I cut my hubbys hair once - never cut hair in my life but thought that I must have learnt something for all the hours I had sat in the chair. He went to my hairdresser soon after and she was like wtf did this!?!?!

It will grow back, or just buzz cut it all over!

Mouikey · 08/09/2019 19:05

OH and some of our local barbers open at 8am - is that available near you?

Gustavo1 · 08/09/2019 19:07

Oh dear. My DS is terrible with the barber and we have done this before. More than once! A wash and a sleep on it will help a little. Otherwise, don’t worry! It will grow back eventually and this will be a funny story and an even better photo to show off when he’s older 👍🏻

SmellMySmellbow · 08/09/2019 19:09

Sympathy. Ds once compalined his hair was going in his eyes. We were about to leave on holiday. I cut his fringe with my kitchen scissors. He looked like grayson perry. I was mortified. Managed to find a local hairdresser who fixed it last minute. Is it fixable? Did you watch videos on how to do it?

Heartburn888 · 08/09/2019 19:10

A hard lesson learned op haha

Ambidexte · 08/09/2019 19:11

Buzz cut it all over. Been there...

Kanga83 · 08/09/2019 19:11

Can you not just buzz cut all over? It will grow in no time

SmellMySmellbow · 08/09/2019 19:12

I also thought clippers were easy. Bloke I fancied at uni, in freshers week, asked me if I could cut hair. I said yes (never having done it before) He asked for a fade. I was at it for over an hour, jept going shorter and shorter and higher and higher to try and even it out. There were bald patches. He looked like he had mange. I couldn't stop laughing. He did not see the funny side. Went grade 1 all over and wore a beanie for weeks. It was longer before he spoke to me again.

Robstersgirl · 08/09/2019 19:13

Looks like the buzz all over may be my only option. His hair was lovely too! Lesson learned! Should’ve practiced this the first day of the 6 weeks holidays really. Blush

TailsoftheManyPaws · 08/09/2019 19:14

As long as he’s not completely bald, don’t stress about it. If there’s any hair left at the front, use the longest clipper setting or bunch it in your fingers and snip into it to avoid the hard fringe look.

Four year olds are pretty tolerant of crap haircuts.

Robstersgirl · 08/09/2019 19:16

TailsoftheManyPaws

The fringe is the worst part. It’s clippered on top and really not blended well at all. The fringe is really not good.

A short buzz cut isn't a bad idea. Less likely to catch nits! If he's not fussed stuck with all over in the same grade as the shortest bit right now, and then ongoing even if it's a longer 5,6,7 grade. It'll look tidy. Don't attempt fades, they're difficult!

I've only restarted using hairdressers and barbers now they're late into juniors/secondary and they have ideas about what they'd like.

recrudescence · 08/09/2019 19:18

He looked like he had mange

Grin

Is it as bad as this OP? Be honest.

Aafi · 08/09/2019 19:18

It would be good if you can post a picture of him, it'll give some idea or trim his entire head to the smallest setting possible..

That was my son and I did it like twice to him but now I'm a professional house hairdresser 😂at least that's what I consider myself..... Now I'm doing my husband's hair every twenty days, DS's hair every two months, Dad's hair and my hair....trust me this saves us a FORTUNE 💰

GrumpiestCat · 08/09/2019 19:19

We have never had nits in 12 years thanks to me and my inept clipper buzz cuts!

ThatssomebadhatHarry · 08/09/2019 19:19

Take a photo and you will fondly look back on it. One day. Grin

SparklyMagpie · 08/09/2019 19:28

Oh no haha, is it really that bad?

Shodan · 08/09/2019 19:28

Oh lordy Grin

I'm sorry OP but I'm chortling to myself here, because I did the exact same thing to my DS too. Bless him, he didn't really notice but it was so short. And, to make it worse (and might make you thank your lucky stars)- I'd forgotten it was Photo Day. I had to buy a photo just to remind myself never to do that again...

Rosere · 08/09/2019 19:30

Hair cutting is definitely an art. An art I've not mastered either. I empathise.
Buzz cut. He will be gorgeous anyway.

Poing · 08/09/2019 19:30

I have been clipping my husband and son's hair for a few years now and really, you just improve over time and learn what you can and cannot do. I second the PPs who said a buzz cut. Also, starting from a 5 or 6 for the next haircut will give you a little more room for fixing errors.

Keep at it, OP, and it will get easier. Then you can have some fun. DS wanted a simple mini-mohawk at the beginning of the holidays. Not a style I would choose but it went well (2 on the sides and a 6 on top) and now pretty much looks grown out for school.

I’m sure you’ll be fine and more importantly so will he! You see so many kids of reception age with dodgy haircuts lol. Or just messy hair or hair that hasn’t been cut in ages. It really doesn’t make a difference and no one cares at school anyway. Does his hair grow fast? You could always take him with a sun hat or baseball cap tomorrow which will at least hide a multitude of sins when outdoors.

We need a pic op. We may be able to help. My dh once did ds's hair. He basically looked like he had gone through chemotherapy (he's very pale and thin) and people were constantly asking if he was ok. As soon as it started to grow I spiked it up as high as I could
