My son starts reception tomorrow. I’ve ruined his hair.
He never sits still for barbers and hates going there, so I took myself off to Tesco, handed over £25 (which incidentally would cover 3 professional haircuts in my area) and left with a set of clippers. Can’t be that hard right?
Armed with youtube tutorials and a misjudged confidence I cut his hair.
It’s terrible. There is no time to make it right. He starts school in the morning. AIBU to lie and say I took him to a terrible hairdresser who I’m considering suing? Confused

I used to cut all my DDs' hair - for the next few weeks I would sit opposite them at the table and say:"Sit still, I'm getting the scissors - the fringe is not straight!" Used to drive them nuts.

Dogmcstuffins · 08/09/2019 19:33

Don’t buzz it all over, hair gel is your friend. I’ve covered up an awful home hair cut on my boy with gel.
Gel it and then get him into the hairdressers after school to see if they can fix it.

JollyRocker · 08/09/2019 19:33

Just seen the pics, not bad! apart from the third pic it looks fine, could you blend the bit in the third pic a bit more? ie clippers where it’s longer so that the short bit doesn’t show as much?

MaybeitsMaybelline · 08/09/2019 19:34

Oh yes picture please 😀

We have all been there, DD has an amazing nursery photo where I cut her fringe. It’s horrendous and hilarious in one go. I had no idea it was photo day either which makes me a a really shit parent. The photo has been laughed at many times since, and she goes look adorable.....20 years later.

DS wanted highlights in his hair age about 10 during the six week summer. I did them myself. He looked like a Dalmatian and had a buzz cut two days later.

That was the end of my hairdresssing career.

GrumpiestCat · 08/09/2019 19:34

Yep leave fades and gradiated short back and sides to the experts Grin but you tried OP and I applaud you for that. FlowersWine

Sorryandstressed · 08/09/2019 19:34

That's not bad at all. Loads of gel, sweep it to the side, a bit cool and messy and it's fine.

Robstersgirl · 08/09/2019 19:35

KetoWithIF I totally forgot about that ad! 🤣🤣🤣

It’s much shorter than it seems in the pics so can’t be styled. He has band patches too. His dad is going to kill me. 🤣 He’s meeting us at the gates. 🙈

I think it looks okay to be honest. Just see if you can take him to a local hair dresser after school for a touch up. Knowbody will be paying much attention your your son especially on the first day, they all have their own little ones and their own first day anxieties.

IHaveBrilloHair · 08/09/2019 19:37

Buzz cut, or just style it out tomorrow and get a hairdresser to sort it straight after school?

Robstersgirl · 08/09/2019 19:37

My ds (just 5) is awful at the barbers, i started cutting both his and dh's hair last year, to help combat the fear. I am getting better and better at it but the blending is hit and miss!

Last year i tried to trim a bit of hair that was bothering me just before school, i used a the clippers without the guard and dear god i took a huge chunk out! I then tried to even it all out, he looked awful! For a few weeks before it all grew out and i could cut it again!! I felt sooo bad but i can laugh about it now just

I would sit him facing away from you, pull the fringe up and the cut into it making it all choppy.

Make sure you use good scissors!!

Jenasaurus · 08/09/2019 19:39

My DS’S cut my DDs hair the day before playgroup. I was horrified but my DD was delighted as she looked just like her brothers! The ladies at playgroup were lovely about it although they did have a giggle. My DDs lovely long hair was now just tufts in her head and she looked like a little boy in a dress.

Mrsmadevans · 08/09/2019 19:40

OP it looks alright don't worry, just tell them he wouldn't sit still for the barber , we have all been there Grin

Even it out a little bit, but if he doesn't care it's all good!

Hair grows.

IHaveBrilloHair · 08/09/2019 19:41

Imagine this on a small, blond 3yr old.
It wasn't good, DD did it to herself and I cried and cried.
She's 18 now and I find it hilarious.
You will get over this, it will be ok, and on the first day, the other parents will be so busy with their own children that they won't notice, or care.

I’ve f***ed up. What now?

I’m too scared to go near it again. Confused

The photos don't look too bad and it will likely grow back really quickly. But YANBU to lie! But people will ask which hairdresser and obviously you can't blame a real one. So say you got it done while on holiday or staying with a relative. Grin

I had to start get a rush appointment at a hairdresser after screwing up my kid's hair just before the start of school so I sort of know how you feel and I was hugely lucky to have a spare day when a local hairdresser was available. I was embarrassed to even take her there as it was pretty obvious that I'd screwed up! But they were lovely and sorted it all out. Now my daughter delights in telling the tale of how I messed her hair up and am not allowed near it.

Whattodo20192 · 08/09/2019 19:43

I did the same last week.

I cut it all the same short length then so that it was all even. You might have to do the same. I was devastated and ds said "I don't like it, it's not my style" but everyone else keeps complimenting it and telling him and me that they love it and he's much more grown up Confused

I’m so pleased to see I’m not the only one who’s done this at a crucial time. In other news...any recommendations on how to get a 4 year old to sit still at the barbers? Also, Hair Clippers for sale - used once. Collection only. 😂

The last one I took him to done a bad job. I have grounds to blame him. It’s not lying if it really happened (6 weeks ago) is it?
