To think ‘chips or potatoes’ implies potatoes are an option?!

DP’s turn to make tea tonight. He wants kievs but has realised we have nothing to go with them. I offer to go out to the shop as we need a few other bits anyway.

He says, and this is important: ’Okay, get either chips or potatoes.’

I come home with potatoes.

He sees the potatoes. All hell ensues.

‘WHY DID YOU GET POTATOES? YOU KNOW I CAN’T PEEL THEM!’ (He has a bad arm at the mo).

Ok, says I, I will peel the potatoes.

Nope, not good enough. Apparently I am selfish and ‘never think of him.’

SO WHY ON GOD’S GREEN EARTH DID HE TELL ME ‘EITHER CHIPS OR POTATOES’ ?!

AIBU to have made the assumption that ‘either chips or potatoes’ means that I should get either chips or potatoes, and not just chips?

YANBU. I would have bought potatoes too - he didn’t express a preference for one or the other. I hate oven chips though! A lovely baked potato or even some champ would be great with chicken Kiev

Samosaurus · 08/09/2019 15:14

Maybe he meant frozen ready prepared potatoes which in his mind were linked to chips 🤷🏻‍♀️ But if this is the worst thing that’s happened to him this week, then he can’t really complain!

birdlawyer · 08/09/2019 15:15

Samosaurus Do they exist?! I had no clue they existed!

BottleCrow · 08/09/2019 15:17

I would have thought mashed potatoes

iolaus · 08/09/2019 15:17

Any chance he meant jacket potatoes or even new potatoes? though he should have been more exact

You weren't unreasonable at all, however if you knew he is having dexterity problems at the moment but is wanting to still do his share I would have brought potatoes which didn't need peeling

ShirleyPhallus · 08/09/2019 15:17

Why does he need to peel the potatoes for chips? The skin is the best bit!

birdlawyer · 08/09/2019 15:19

The potatoes were for mash, we generally prefer to do our own mash rather than use a mixture, however upon some deep reflection I admit I should have bought some packet mash on this occasion!

I would have thought maybe he meant chips or some sort of similar frozen potato product like waffles, wedges, croquettes, something you just chuck in the oven like oven chips.

Tojigornot · 08/09/2019 15:20

Frozen mash is the bees knees.

TeamUnicorn · 08/09/2019 15:22

Did he say 'get potatoes' or 'get potato'

The first I would have got a bag of such, the latter ready made stuff.

TheWernethWife · 08/09/2019 15:23

OP - I would have shoved the bloody potatoes up his backside if he had talked to me like that !!!

LaMarschallin · 08/09/2019 15:27

NannyR

That's exactly what I thought.
I hadn't thought of croquettes though; clever Smile

Mlou32 · 08/09/2019 15:28

I'd throw the effing potatoes at him!

birdlawyer · 08/09/2019 15:31

It was definitely potatoes plural!

The thing is the only potato products we generally eat are oven chips, or homemade chips, roasties or mash. I can’t remember the last time I bought any other sort of potato apart from oven chips or a bag of potatoes from the vegetable aisle!

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 08/09/2019 15:36

Well if his got a back arm common sense should of told you not to buy potatoes that needed peeling on his night to cook. I would of got chips for ease given the bad arm

Seriously people on here oh I’d throw the potatoes at him, can’t complain if that’s the worst thing to happen to him this week 🙄 everyone on here is so perfect and never gets pissed off at anything small like the rest of us.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 08/09/2019 15:37

To me, “potatoes” means just that. A bag of
potatoes. It wouldn’t occur to me to get something pre-made unless it was specifically requested. YANBU at all.

KatherineJaneway · 08/09/2019 15:39

Sounds like he is annoyed at you because he was not clear in his instructions. Like he expected you to have ESP.

Or at him.

I want a baked potato now!

When I read the thread opener , in my mind's eye I saw nice little sweet new potatoes (which we had yesterday), but now a baked potato has been mentioned it, and I really, really want one . . .

Rachelover60 · 08/09/2019 15:47

As others have said, you could have jacket potatoes, they would be nice with Kiev. New potatoes would be good too, you don't peel them.

I'm amazed he can make Kiev with a bad arm but can't peel spuds. What other veg will you be having? Salad would be nice. Ooooh I'm feeling hungry now.

Terriere · 08/09/2019 15:47

I'd have rice with kiev anyway.

LillithsFamiliar · 08/09/2019 15:49

With your update, I'd have assumed he meant pre-prepared roast potatoes because I'd expect both options to mean the same amount of work. Oven chips and roast potatoes - pop in the oven.

BritWifeinUSA · 08/09/2019 15:50

YANBU to think potatoes means potatoes, as in whole raw potatoes that you cook and not just chips. You made the better choice - the meal already has one processed “heat and serve” item. Why would you want another?

Those who think shoving a few Kiev’s and frozen chips in the oven is “cooking” ABU. That’s warming up, not cooking.

willowmelangell · 08/09/2019 15:51

@KatherineJaneway omg yes!, not a mind reader! Clearly OP was supposed to translate what he SAID into what he MEANT. Doh. Been there soooo often.Smile
