To think ‘chips or potatoes’ implies potatoes are an option?!

DP’s turn to make tea tonight. He wants kievs but has realised we have nothing to go with them. I offer to go out to the shop as we need a few other bits anyway.

He says, and this is important: ’Okay, get either chips or potatoes.’

I come home with potatoes.

He sees the potatoes. All hell ensues.

‘WHY DID YOU GET POTATOES? YOU KNOW I CAN’T PEEL THEM!’ (He has a bad arm at the mo).

Ok, says I, I will peel the potatoes.

Nope, not good enough. Apparently I am selfish and ‘never think of him.’

SO WHY ON GOD’S GREEN EARTH DID HE TELL ME ‘EITHER CHIPS OR POTATOES’ ?!

AIBU to have made the assumption that ‘either chips or potatoes’ means that I should get either chips or potatoes, and not just chips?

Man-cooking. Woman buys, woman preps, man does something with heat, possibly plates it up, woman clears away, puts dishwasher on. You are perpetuating this laziness and pseudo incompetence op. How dare he also get cross with you? Fuck him

RosesAndRaindrops · 08/09/2019 15:55

He said chips or potatoes - you got one of them.
If he wanted a specific one he should have bloody said or gone to get them himself!
YANBU, would have driven me batty!

Harriettenightingale · 08/09/2019 15:56

I often just cut up roast potatoes small. No need to peel or par boil. Just as easy as oven chips and much tastier! I would have got a bag of potatoes too OP.

prettybird · 08/09/2019 15:58

Potato wedges: just need cut (unpeeled) into quarters, sixths or eighths, depending on the size, toss in some oil and put into a hot over for c30 minutes (depending on how cooked you like them), turning/tossing once during cooking.

Oldraver · 08/09/2019 16:00

He's being a twat.. but the little tiny new potataoe around at the moment are lovely and easy to prepare

Zaphodsotherhead · 08/09/2019 16:02

He's not really 'making tea' though, is he, OP? He's defrosting and reheating, at best.

Making tea to me implies actual cooking.

stucknoue · 08/09/2019 16:04

He was probably imagining pre prepared potatoes. I tend to buy mash these days because it costs little extra once you factor in gas

ChoporNot · 08/09/2019 16:17

Um, we mash the potatoes with the skins on. Yes they are not 100% smooth (but not bad) and they taste amazing - really potato-ey.

Leflic · 08/09/2019 16:18

Having never had a pre prepped pototo aside from oven chips I’d assume it was a real potato or a bag of chips.
If
however you do have mash or jacket spuds pre done than he is not being unreasonable to assume you would take his arm into account.

Straycatblue · 08/09/2019 16:23

I think puzzling over all the possible types of potato isnt gonna help, you're focusing on the wrong thing, its his attitude when you came home thats the problem.

Even if you had bought the wrong thing (and Im not for one minute saying you did) the way hes treated you and turned it into a massive drama and made himself a poor victim even when you offered to peel them thats the problem.
(unless theres some back story about you repeatedly maliciously purchasing innapropriate potato products)

Is he always like this?

LannieDuck · 08/09/2019 16:26

What was his explanation for having said "chips or potatoes" if he didn't want you to get potatoes?

squeekums · 08/09/2019 16:32

I would have said frozen potatoes, wedges, chips, whatever. That was his mistake
But i get his annoyance, i wouldnt want the extra work of prepping potatoes, if im doing kiev its fast, easy and only prep is heat the oven and air fryer

He's not really 'making tea' though, is he, OP? He's defrosting and reheating, at best.
Making tea to me implies actual cooking.

It goes in the oven, if left too long will burn and be inedible, its cooking.
Reheating is what you do using a microwave for leftover lasagna or whatever

Straycatblue · 08/09/2019 16:34

The immature side of me would be tempted to to respond to how ridiculous hes being by ordering several Mr Potato heads and a scattering them around the house where he might find them, like under his pillow , on his car dashboard.

To think ‘chips or potatoes’ implies potatoes are an option?!
birdlawyer · 08/09/2019 16:38

Straycatblue He’s certainly no stranger to expecting me to read his mind then getting upset because I haven’t done what he wanted me to do but didn’t actually tell me to do! It’s difficult to tackle because if I confront him about it he just gets upset. It’s not a particularly frequent occurrence though, our marriage is usually a very happy one!

LannieDuck No explanation! Just ‘you know I have a bad arm!’ I just left it. Will peel the potatoes later I suppose!

@Terriere RICE?!? With Kiev? Ya weirdo Grin

Yabbers · 08/09/2019 17:23

Apparently I am selfish and ‘never think of him.’

Sounds like this is bigger than the potatoes.

Aprillygirl · 08/09/2019 18:20

Why don't you just take that massive chip off of his shoulder and fry that OP?

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 08/09/2019 18:23

Rice works well with Kiev - soaks up the juices.

BottleCrow · 08/09/2019 18:36

Ready made mash, not packet mash

scittlescatter · 08/09/2019 18:46

Surely no potatoes need peeling? Goodness under the skin and all that.

I regularly have skin on fries and mash. It tastes just as good Wink

InterestingView · 08/09/2019 18:48

Just chop up raw skin on potatoes, dash on olive oil on a baking tray, sprinkle of sea salt and pop in the oven for 30 mins. Chips sorted. Enjoy.

Bluntness100 · 08/09/2019 18:51

Were you unaware he has a bad arm and can't peel potatoes? If so then yes he is unreasonable.

If you were fully aware of this, and had no intention of helping him by peeling them, then yes getting him potatoes to peel for mash was rather shitty. Baked potatoes or something would have worked.

Why make life harder for someone. If he can't peel them, offer to help.

wibbletooth · 08/09/2019 18:51

Best way to make mash is to make jacket potatoes - unpeeled potatoes in the microwave is fine - then scoop the freshly cooked potato flesh out and mash with butter and cream. Delicious - much tastier than normal mash as the potato is not as watery. And really easy too - no pesky peeling!

LucieFurr · 08/09/2019 18:52

I'm finding it difficult to care about this
