To think a bigger tv is a waste of money?

Me and my boyfriend have been saving for a few months and decided after a few months we would have a treat.
This quarter it's his turn to pick what to do with the savings and he's chose a new tv.
We have a 32 inch tv in living room and he says he's embarrassed when he's friends come over and wants to buy a 50 inch.
He's found one for only £499.99 but I can't help think it's a waste.
We've only had this a year..it works perfect
We could have had a nice weekend away with that.
He's set on the tv
Is this a waste ?

Here is your answer. I take it you put no parameters on how the money is spent?

We have a 32 inch tv in living room and he says he's embarrassed when he's friends come over and wants to buy a 50 inch

Has he got a small weiner or something ?

PooWillyBumBum · 06/09/2019 15:02

I think big TVs look naff unless you have a palatial living room that makes it look proportional.

Unfortunately if you've set the precedent for 'taking turns' you'll have to suck it up - and maybe will be thankful for it when you want to buy something he thinks is a waste!

BeyondMyWits · 06/09/2019 15:05

he wants a big TV, it is his turn to decide - does he complain at your choices?

At least you will both get to use it... for years... a weekend away is over in a flash, you are left with memories - which you don't know before you go will be good ones, or bad ones.

wildcherries · 06/09/2019 15:06

Tbh, I think 32" is small too. But what's more important is that you can't say it's his turn to choose and then not let him. Unless he does the same when you choose. In which case you have bigger issues.

PettyContractor · 06/09/2019 15:06

We could have had a nice weekend away with that.

So you think one nice weekend is a better use of money than 10 years (depending on ho long the TV lasts) of better TV?

Has he got a small weiner or something ?

If you really think the size of TV has no impact on the quality of the experience, maybe they could sell the 32-inch on ebay and spend £5 on a stand to hold up a mobile phone.

Mrsthomasshelby1 · 06/09/2019 15:08

I think 32 is too small for living room.

But even if I didn't it's his turn so you shouldn't be interfering.

Squashpocket · 06/09/2019 15:08

Yeah, my DH loves a big tv too (and compares sizes with his matesHmm). Baffles me, but it's important to him, so I just go with it. He lets me have my little foibles too. If you didn't specify any rules on how the money is spent, you might have to let him have this one. And make sure you get what you want next time of course Grin

BarbaraofSeville · 06/09/2019 15:09

Maybe instead of having joint savings that you take turns in choosing what to spend them on, you should split the money 50/50 and then spend it as you choose, then he can waste his share on replacing a perfectly functional one year old electronic appliance and you can spend your share on whatever you want.

Did he have a say in the original TV purchase? It seems odd that something he agreed to a year ago is now 'embarassing'. To be honest, I would find a 50" TV far more embarrassing than a normal sized one, to the extent that I wouldn't even have one if it was free.

PettyContractor · 06/09/2019 15:13

This is a good way to think about it, if what matters to you what the room looks like when the TV is off.

On the other hand, if what matters to you is what the TV picture looks like when you're watching it, then you need the right size for your viewing distance and resolution. For HD TV watched from about 8 feet, 55 inches is about right. Eight feet is likely to be the shortest practical viewing distance, when you have the couch right in front of the TV facing it. If it's further away, the optimum TV will be bigger.

ilovemytumbledryer · 06/09/2019 15:15

A 32 inch is tiny. I watch a lot of films and football so love my 50.

PettyContractor · 06/09/2019 15:18

Maybe the solution is for everyone to buy houses with two living rooms. The woman can have a tastefully decorated room that's used for say an average of an hour or two a month for talking to visitors, and the man can have a TV room that is used for a few hours a day. I know which I think is better use of space.

PettyContractor · 06/09/2019 15:19

Of course NAWAL, some of you appreciate a proper-sized TV.

HUZZAH212 · 06/09/2019 15:23

OH wants a bigger TV 😒 I would like a new sofa. Each to their own I suppose.

popolo · 06/09/2019 15:23

We only got the 32 inch because we were just moving in together so had to buy everything
Sofa,fridge,cooker etc etc
So didn't have enough money to spend on a bigger tv and my logic was it's better than nothing.
Il let him have the tv to keep the peace

The last quarter I managed to get a decent sofa for only £799.
I guess your right it will last for years and we can move the 32 inch into the bedroom as we don't have one in there

Bunglefromrainbow · 06/09/2019 15:26

32" is about as small as you can get for a living room TV these days. It is small if you have a decent sized room. If all his mates are watching on 50" screens then they probably don't wanna come round and watch on that thing.

A good compromise might be 42" if it is the size that worries you but it doesn't sound like it is.

As for £500 though, why not compromise and get an Entry level TV.
I have this TV which is £329 and 50 inch, it's highly rated for the price. The 43" version is £299.

gamerchick · 06/09/2019 15:29

His turn, you can do the weekend away with your turn Grin

I couldn't cope with a 32. The only problem I have with bigger telly's is the crap sound so then it's a sound system to go with it. Sound bar on it's own is rubbish though, it needs a bass speaker to get the best out of it.

Pinga · 06/09/2019 15:30

Our tv is 19". I am rather amused at the idea that a 32" tv is "too small". :)

HUZZAH212 · 06/09/2019 15:31

Have you got a Netflix or now TV OP? You may find it's rather good having a TV in the bedroom if there's box sets you disagree on watching. I always disliked a TV in the bedroom till we got a subscription.

LuckyAmy1986 · 06/09/2019 15:31

I would let him get it and your plan of moving the smaller one into the bedroom is a good idea. 32 would be too small for me as well. I guess you have to be willing to compromise if you pool all your savings like this and take it in turns?

JacquesHammer · 06/09/2019 15:33

This quarter it's his turn to pick what to do with the savings and he's chose a new tv

Then it doesn't really matter what you want or not, unless he has put caveats on how you can spend when its your turn to treat.

Enjoy a nice weekend away next time when its your turn Smile

darkriver19886 · 06/09/2019 15:34

I prefer a bigger TV. I am a gamer and it helps. It's his choice as it's his turn.

zippey · 06/09/2019 15:42

I’d be very disappointed if I went to the cinema and the screen was only 32 inches. Funny though, years ago, a 21 inch telly was a nice big one.

Has he got a small weiner or something ? - Does the size of penis or boobs matter?

There is a formula for working out the maximum size of tv for the size of room you have. The general rule is the bigger the better. A nice large tv is one of those under rated luxuries in life.

Whoseagooddoggiethen · 06/09/2019 15:46

I feel like a right chav with a 65inch tv now... despite my huge sitting room!

I would go for the tv too. Its his turn to chose either way but winter months mean nice evenings on the couch watching movies and i myself prefer a big tv over a 32inch one. None of my neighbours can even see in the windows here so definitely big tv for me not them Wink

PrincessHoneysuckle · 06/09/2019 15:46

We've got a 55inch and its just right for our room. And for anyone who's interested dh hasn't got a small weiner Grin
