To think a bigger tv is a waste of money?

Me and my boyfriend have been saving for a few months and decided after a few months we would have a treat.
This quarter it's his turn to pick what to do with the savings and he's chose a new tv.
We have a 32 inch tv in living room and he says he's embarrassed when he's friends come over and wants to buy a 50 inch.
He's found one for only £499.99 but I can't help think it's a waste.
We've only had this a year..it works perfect
We could have had a nice weekend away with that.
He's set on the tv
Is this a waste ?

Its his turn. End of. And 32 is small these days.

Drogosnextwife · 06/09/2019 15:53

My dps friend has a massive TV, their living room is small and the couch is about 6 feet away from the TV. When you sit infront of it you can't look at the whole screen at one, it just baffles me that anyone would want that. Even when I'm at the cinema I chose to sit further back so I can see the whole screen. TV snobbery these days is wild 😉

Confrontayshunme · 06/09/2019 15:53

I think I am missing the point, but can you at least please sell or charity shop the "old" one? No wonder the earth is awash in plastic. My parents had the same tv for the first 23 years of my life, now everyone gets a newer, bigger one every couple years while bludgeoning each other on Black Friday.

Do yourself a favour and watch Years and Years on iPlayer then tell me how useful a 50" telly is going to be in 10 years.

TheRebelAlliance · 06/09/2019 15:58

My TV is 32 inches and 19 years old. It is in a room that is 25 feet by 16 feet and it is perfect.

HUZZAH212 · 06/09/2019 16:12

@Confrontayshunme OP said they'll put the 'old' TV in the bedroom, so it'll definitely not be going to a landfill. I also don't like the throw away society we seem to live in now, but I also believe electronics have a built in shelf life these days. My old cooker was my mums pre loved Belling and lasted nearly 40yrs till the door fell off and a ring went 😔. I don't think things are manufactored to last now though. The era of buy the best you can afford so no need to replace it are long gone.

Our TV 28 inch TV is about 13 years old and on its last legs. Half the screen is darker than the other half.
We thought we'd go a little bigger this time and to price up a new one in Curry's and the assistant snorted when I asked where the 32 inch TV's were and said they were just bedroom televisions these days. So now DH wants a 40 something inch one.
I don't want a giant tv. We don't watch anything that warrants a huge screen and then there's the whole question of where to put it. Those stands you get are fugly, above the fire naff and too high, wall naff and hidden by the fire place.

I agree with the previous poster who suggested richer sounds for a tv. Don't go somewhere like Currys as they have old stock and cant really advise you. Richer Sounds are full of nerds who know their stuff. Not sure I'd go for the cheapest TV though. We got one and you could see bands down the picture when there was fast movement during a football match for instance. I also seem to recall the contrast between colours wasnt good. We swapped the first tv for a Panasonic which is good. Also be mindful that you want something which has apps that can be updated. When Disney Plus launches in the UK you may want to subscribe to that.

It’s his turn I guess so you can’t say much. Next time buy yourself some balenciaga trainers.

JupiterJane · 06/09/2019 16:20

We’ve got 60” tv. Chosen by DH. I actually think we should have gone for a bigger one.

32” does sound quite small

24hourshomeedderandcarer · 06/09/2019 17:00

we havent had a 32 inch for years, dont think the kids would cope with one tbh

82inch downstairs and 3 65 inches in the bedrooms

PristineCondition · 06/09/2019 17:04

We've got 65” in a tiny front room.
We all love films and boxsets and it was £600 in the sales.

SerenDippitty · 06/09/2019 17:15

We’ve got a 55 inch in roughly 15 ft square living room. Just about the right size though it does look big. We love it though.

Rezie · 06/09/2019 17:18

My bf insisted on getting a 32" tv and I'm still annoyed that we didn't spend more money and got a bigger one. I don't think it's a waste of money. Sure, you could get something cooler but i don't think this is bad. Upgrading a 50" to 55" would be a waste of money in my book

tryingtobebetterallthetime · 06/09/2019 17:51

Our is 48" I think. The room is quite large with high ceilings. We watch TV for about max 2 hours in the evening only, mostly documentary type stuff and Netflix. I really notice the difference if we have been away and had a smaller TV. It makes things look so much clearer if the TV is bigger.

Even if I wanted to watch in the day, our apartment is so bright I can't see the TV display so keep that in mind. Ours is LED and getting on as TVs go, perhaps that is why.
