Ok so today I have been off, had friend around an catching up on a bit of washing. I throw a load on an it's like half full, I don't give a shit on it goes. Friend then tuts an tells me I am being wasteful!

AIBU to not give a shit about saving the planet every second of the day? Yes I do my bit but really I could careless if my washer or dishwasher is not full to breaking point when I put it on.

So this got me thinking and so I'm asking on here do you care? Do you worry everytime you do something about the effect it is having on the planet? Driving? Taking the bus/train? Using anything in your home that will use water or energy? And would you care still if it was all free? If heating your home in winter was free would you still limit it just to save energy or would you think bollocks to energy saving, I'm cold?

Am I a shit person for not caring? I'm not a piss take I do turn the tap off when brushing teeth, turn lights off when leaving a room ect... But yeah.

Oh btw this friend leaves her tap running for her cat! But tells me I am bloody wasteful....

I just think if all energy were free most (not all) people would not care about turning that TV off at the wall. AIBU?

Nah, washing machine and tumble dryer going all day most days.

Fridakahlofan · 06/09/2019 09:32

Yes I care and wouldn’t run a half load.

Sometimes it is hard to know what the right thing to do is though!

imamearcat · 06/09/2019 09:37

I'm really bad for not giving a shit about things like this. I think it comes down to the fact that I feel like I have a lot of things to worry about that definitely are in my circle of influence, and I don't really believe 'saving the planet' is in my circle of influence, so it falls outside my give a shit radar.

I try not to take the piss but wouldn't think twice about putting a half load on (although that never happens because I always have a ton of washing!)

Atlasta · 06/09/2019 09:44

Currently washing one pair of clean ( worn 4 hours last night PJs). My dryer is drying 4 cushion covers. I have the heating on 22°.
It is my day off and I'll be going to the local shop shortly in the car. I will leave the tv on for ddog, and probably the radio in the kitchen.
I have too much stress in my life without worrying about things that might/might not happen when I'm not here any longer.

buckeejit · 06/09/2019 09:47

Very sad that people don't do all they can. Waste is waste.

One shirt? Ffs. Engage your brain & get dh to save some of the washing for when you get home. Or air your shirt & let it do 2 days. People wash stuff too much as it's too easy. If it isn't dirty, give it another wear.

BarbaraofSeville · 06/09/2019 09:49

You forgot to leave the tap running for the cat Alasta. Wink

Morgan12 · 06/09/2019 09:50

Me using my washing machine to wash approx ten items of clothes every now and again means absolutely fuck all in the grand scheme of things really does it?

So I suppose I don't care.

Waspnest · 06/09/2019 09:53

Baguette that made me snigger. I feel the same about my dishwasher, on the eco setting it can't be arsed cleaning my vegetable pans properly.

ElizaDee · 06/09/2019 09:55

You were.

AIBU to not give a shit about saving the planet every second of the day? Yes I do my bit but really I could careless if my washer or dishwasher is not full to breaking point when I put it on.

Yes YABU.

So this got me thinking and so I'm asking on here do you care?

Yes.

Do you worry everytime you do something about the effect it is having on the planet? Driving? Taking the bus/train? Using anything in your home that will use water or energy?

I am conscious of this and try to reduce where I can.

And would you care still if it was all free?

Yes, it's not about money, it's about not polluting the environment and trying to reverse the damage we are doing.

If heating your home in winter was free would you still limit it just to save energy or would you think bollocks to energy saving, I'm cold?

Yes, put a jumper on and use a blanket.

Am I a shit person for not caring?

Yes.

I'm not a piss take I do turn the tap off when brushing teeth, turn lights off when leaving a room ect... But yeah.

Oh btw this friend leaves her tap running for her cat! But tells me I am bloody wasteful....

Your friend is a fucking idiot.

whattodowith · 06/09/2019 09:57

I worry about being unnecessarily wasteful. My DM has her washing machine on every day and sometimes there will be one or two things in the machine, that is wasteful imo. Half a machine isn't so bad, I would do it if I lived alone and didn't have much washing.

I don't use the car for short trips and try to use public transport where possible. I don't worry about the planet constantly, I think that would class as neurosis tbh Grin.

Mammajay · 06/09/2019 09:59

Apologies if dumb question..I never turn off TV or radio at the plug as I thought it would remove the settings?

Oldraver · 06/09/2019 10:08

I have a so called 'Eco' washer that weighs the load and adjusts accordingly..Though the specific Eco loads last over three hours (very rarely used)..not managed to figure that out yet.

I'm not wasteful over stuff but if I want the bloody heating on or do half a load I will.

MamaNo you will not loose settings on tv etc

Alsohuman · 06/09/2019 10:09

Our washing machine never goes on until there’s a full load, ditto the dishwasher. Some people are lunatics - one shirt, pyjamas worn for four hours? I’m really hoping these are outright lies.

OwnerofanAngryCat · 06/09/2019 10:09

Anyone else enjoying the competitive not giving a fuck?

misspiggy19 · 06/09/2019 10:10

@Dogsarebetterthancatsok

Yeah of course you do (!)

InsertFunnyUsername · 06/09/2019 10:17

Difficult one really. I do try to avoid plastic, recycle etc.

But I'm not well off enough to afford to be environmentally friendly all the time. And in previous winters when I couldn't afford to heat the place, if it was free I would definitely warm the place as much as I like! I've did the extra jumper and hot water bottle, its bloody miserable when you can see your breath and huddled around a shitty heater.

SallyWD · 06/09/2019 10:27

Yes I do actually think about it a lot. I fill my washing machine, dishwasher etc. I'd feel bad if it was half full! But we can all do better. I fly a lot because I have family abroad so it's not like I'm a Saint.

Ginkypig · 06/09/2019 11:16

Well I was going to come on here and say I feel guilty because I do try and I am conscious in a quiet way (not a shouting eco warrior way) in my day to day living but I don't always get it right and sometimes feel guilty because I (and everyone) should be doing better.

I am not an eco nut, just a normal person living a normal boring life.

Off the top of my head.
Haven't had biological children (all adults now)
Don't drive
Don't eat meat
Recycle as much as I know how (but could be better as it's confusing)
Run full loads
Don't own a bath
Haven't been on a flight for 7-8 years
Carry my own bags with me
Keep food waste to a minimum
Buy mostly 2nd hand clothes
Try not to replace things until they need replaced

Major bad things I think would be
Own a cat (she is very old now though) and fish which uses water and adds to packaging and meat.
Own leather (not bought new for at least 5 year)
Heating is slightly higher than most might have it sometimes (but am disabled and have a circulation issue)
Every so often il do a 60 wash but not lots.
Own quite a bit of tech
Like a takeaway and a glass of wine on a Saturday night. (Adds packaging, fuel to deliver, cost of growth of grapes etc)

Then I read the thread and realised I'm doing well compared to lots of examples on this thread!
I think from now on I'll try to do my bit but not feel like Quite so bad if I get something wrong.

Durgasarrow · 06/09/2019 14:26

I care,, but like your friend and everyone else on the planet, I'm a hypocrite. I focus on the things I care about.

karenbokaren · 06/09/2019 15:44

Yes you are being unreasonable. People like you are why the planet is suffering.

I'm seeing pictures of friends houses smashed to shit and their lives destroyed over the last few days then some #%%#^* posts a thread like this. Angry

Gah. I need to get off the Internet.

Cassilis · 06/09/2019 16:16

Yes I do my bit but really I could careless if my washer or dishwasher is not full to breaking point when I put it on.

Yhis is what you first said, your posts about loading to 12kg usually is just drip feeding.

HeronLanyon · 06/09/2019 16:22

Byw if anyone else runs a tap for a cat - one of mine would only drink moving or running water - we had to keep one door shut cos there was a sink with a tap he could manage to turn on but never off. Anyway we got him a great cat fountain made particularly for cats who have similar obsession (lots apparently). Just ran water in a circuit. We then recycled it to a chattery when he was its. RIP bilbo.

HeronLanyon · 06/09/2019 16:22

Cattery.

karenbokaren · 06/09/2019 16:27

We have a Maine Coon and a Norwegian Forest. Both will only drink running water so we had to buy a fountain. But Dave now washes his paws after he's done a shit so we've had to buy two. One for paw washing and one for drinking. Hmm

Qwerty19 · 06/09/2019 16:30

I do plenty for the environment.
But I often put on a load with little in. I can't stand laundry in the basket. Last night dd got paella on a new top. I scrubbed it and machine washed it on its own as nothing else to go In with it.
