Ok so today I have been off, had friend around an catching up on a bit of washing. I throw a load on an it's like half full, I don't give a shit on it goes. Friend then tuts an tells me I am being wasteful!

AIBU to not give a shit about saving the planet every second of the day? Yes I do my bit but really I could careless if my washer or dishwasher is not full to breaking point when I put it on.

So this got me thinking and so I'm asking on here do you care? Do you worry everytime you do something about the effect it is having on the planet? Driving? Taking the bus/train? Using anything in your home that will use water or energy? And would you care still if it was all free? If heating your home in winter was free would you still limit it just to save energy or would you think bollocks to energy saving, I'm cold?

Am I a shit person for not caring? I'm not a piss take I do turn the tap off when brushing teeth, turn lights off when leaving a room ect... But yeah.

Oh btw this friend leaves her tap running for her cat! But tells me I am bloody wasteful....

I just think if all energy were free most (not all) people would not care about turning that TV off at the wall. AIBU?

With 5 people in the house including a 5 year old, 4 year old and a baby, we never don’t have a full load or washing!

Hederex · 05/09/2019 20:42

I try. I do a lot more than I did, say, a year ago. I am pretty careful with water although we aren't on a meter, I recycle properly, I don't leave electricity running for things when I don't need to. I have started paying more attention to what I buy.
But...I use a tumble dryer when it's not needed (never iron though Grin), I am not good with putting good waste in my green bin very often, and if heating were free, I would have it on a lot more than I do.
I don't preach about environmental issues to friends and family but I do make an effort to campaign at higher levels.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 05/09/2019 20:45

Tangent

My washer is 12kg

Which one do you have? Do you recommend it? How long and what temp is the quick cycle? Does it have a hot cycle? What is the max spin speed?

Thank you Smile

OtraCosaMariposa · 05/09/2019 20:47

I go for the easy wins. So of course i don't do things like use a half empty washing machine, buy bottled water, do anything horrendously wasteful.

pinkstripeycat · 05/09/2019 20:49

AIBU to not give a shit about saving the planet every second of the day?

Riiiiiiight, so you’ve got better things to think about than saving the planet? Well if people don’t care there won’t be a bloody planet! This has got to be THE most stupid statement ever!

VladmirsPoutine · 05/09/2019 20:57

I agree with your premise unfortunately. If it were free I don't think 'most' people - and I choose that word carefully - would give two hoots.

I don't constantly worry about the impact of ALL my actions on the planet but I'm certainly mindful of it. I do small things iyswim? Like recycling bottles/cans. Using refillable water canisters. Cycle as much as is practical but I always get the tube/train. Not necessarily because of the environment but parking in central London is crazy.

All that said, the real causes of climate disaster aren't Bob and Jane down the road putting on their heating or driving to work. Look at the corporations and indeed their efforts to curtail climate disaster. You not using your washing machine isn't going to save the world.

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 05/09/2019 21:01

I recycle and whatnot but honestly I couldn't give a damn about saving water and using less plastic. It's too late to protect the planet, it's been too late for years. By the time it starts to really deteriorate to the point that we can see, I will be dead and so will everyone I care about.

BackforGood · 05/09/2019 21:05

I suspect we all have things we are careful about, and then do other things which perhaps aren't great, because they make our lives easier.

So, for me, I started off thinking 'Yes, I care. I wouldn't set off a load that hadn't got enough clothes in it, because Ihate waste. Same as I would eat leftovers, etc. but I love my tumble dryer so probably use that more than I actually need to, it just makes my life that much easier, so I justify it to myself.

Heartburn888 · 05/09/2019 21:09

I recycle my waste Into the correct bins but that’s as far as I go.

MaximusHeadroom · 05/09/2019 21:09

I do my best but I also carry guilt around with me about everything. I always feel I am not doing enough, even though I know I do a lot more than a lot of people I know

Onceuponacheesecake · 05/09/2019 21:15

Yes I do consider this every time I put a wash on. I don't "worry" about it, it's just second nature/common sense.

Aprillygirl · 05/09/2019 21:20

Your friend leaves the tap running for the cat? Wtf! I try not to avoid unnecessary wastage of the world's resources where I can, and still would be careful if it was all free for me, but I would be thoroughly pissed off if someone who left the tap running constantly lectured me about my usage Hmm

DrinkTaboo · 05/09/2019 21:21

@pinkstripeycat why is it the most stupid comment ever?

I really don't even think about the planet everyday. Again I do my bit such as recycling and that but that's done without thought tbh. I don't think everytime I turn the dishwasher on "omg am I killing the planet right now" I just turn it on and carry on about my day.

I too also have a tumble Blush ... I do hang stuff out when it's sunny.

sweetkitty · 05/09/2019 21:29

Never have to worry about a full load there’s six of us in this house there’s always washing.
Try to hang washing out wherever possible but we’re in Scotland it rains a lot.
Recycle everything we can
I’m vegan, and have 2 vegetarians.
Walk a lot.
Try not to buy plastic but it’s difficult. For instance ordered school clothes from M&S every single item can individually, then inside every item was wrapped in plastic. There’s was a lot (4 DC in school) there was just a mountain of plastic after unpacking.

Bourbonbiccy · 05/09/2019 22:01

I'm always conscious of the usage of my washing machines and dishwasher. I'm thoughtful with my electricity.

I do tend to use my water, a lot, I hand wash a lot of our clothes, it keeps them looking fresh and new for longer (IME), mopping floors, wiping up spills, washing crayon off my door, cleaning sticky hands off everything .

ComeTheFuck0nBridget · 06/09/2019 06:23

But not putting a half load on is so easy, you just grab a few more bits to shove in.

Also, YABU for saying "you could care less". That means you do actually care. The correct saying is "you couldN'T care less"

fedoff · 06/09/2019 06:28

Our utilities are included in our rent here in Kuwait and they are very cheap here anyway. I'm a lot less energy efficient here as I'm not stressing about the cost. So YANBU

adaline · 06/09/2019 07:47

I'm sorry but what's bigger in your life than the bloody planet you live on?

Comments like this really piss me off - not everyone has the luxury of choosing to save the planet!

People still have to go to work, pay the rent and the bills, feed and clothe their children.

Shoxfordian · 06/09/2019 07:50

Yanbu
I don't think about the environment on a daily basis either

AuntieStella · 06/09/2019 07:53

"AIBU to not give a shit about saving the planet every second of the day?"

I think YABU because the little choices all add up. It's great that you do other things, but that does not give you a free pass to be profligate in others

missmouse101 · 06/09/2019 07:53

Yabvu. Yabvu also, for saying could care less when you actually mean COULDN'T. Half a load is such a waste of everything including time.

Dipi · 06/09/2019 07:58

I'm a shit person, but only wash full washes, wash up a full sink etc

Aannnaa · 06/09/2019 08:08

DrinkTaboo i have a friend who literally screeches at me for putting my washing machine on - when it's a 15 minute cold wool cycle for the babies blanket because 'it's killing turtles' - yet she drives a petrol range rover to take her kids the 100 yards from her house to school - and yes, we've had many cross words

Baguetteaboutit · 06/09/2019 09:19

I'm deeply suspicious of my washing machine's eco mode. All the clothes are in there for nigh on three hours and they come out less clean. It's like a teenage mode akin to tidying its room while in fact it's just dossing around listening to music and complaining about its hard life.

BarbariansMum · 06/09/2019 09:27

You may not think about the planet every day OP but your kids will. And your grandkids may well die because if it. Lucky you, eh?
