To think Sainsbury’s cafe is better than M&S?

Went to a M&S cafe with dd yesterday thinking I could buy something like lasagne or fish and chips, but all they were serving was their overpriced cakes and jacket potatoes and soups. There was nothing nice to eat. So we left and went and bought exactly the same sandwiches in their food hall for half the price.

Sainsbury’s cafes have a massive variety of foods and warm snacks for adults and children.

Really sad I made a thread about it, but M&S disappointed me. They disappoint a lot, except I bought really nice basic black socks for £2.50. 5 pairs.

My local Sainsburys (actually 9 miles away, but it's the nearest one) is very slow but they do a lovely cheese and ham omelette and the women who work there are nice. The coffee's piss weak though, I have to get an extra shot in mine and I don't really go for strong coffee. The tea is undrinkable, I think the tea bags are full of fresh air.

For a full English, I'd always opt for the greasy spoon on the nearby industrial estate. Proper breakfast, toast and a cuppa, £3.75, banter with the father and son who run it is great and I'm not likely to bump into colleagues or clients in there.

Last time I used an M&S cafe, it was fine. Nice toasted sandwich, great coffee and a cake, but not cheap, I agree.

Depends on the branch, Sainsbury's is really bad here, they just microwave their ready meals in front of you! M&S is better

buckleten · 05/09/2019 20:34

I much prefer the M&S cafe to Sainsburys - quality food and drink and a much nicer environment, no comparison!

MileyWiley · 05/09/2019 20:39

I think Sainsbury cafe is extortionate and the service is atrocious. M&S is next door and although slightly more expensive the service and quality of food are much more acceptable.

Sindragosan · 05/09/2019 20:46

M&S have a good cake selection, Morrison's hot food is good, poor cake selection. Waitrose have good range of options but slow service, sainsbury's is ok depending where you go - we have 2 nearby and one is definitely better than the other.

tillytrotter1 · 05/09/2019 20:49

In our nearest Sainsbury;s, Longwater Norwich if they're looking, you could die of starvation they're so slow.

Ohflippineck · 05/09/2019 20:50

Loved Sainsbury’s in Truro, w6 years ago. No idea what it’s like now. used to drop 9 year old at School then take newborn to Sainsbury’s, bury us in one of their big, squashy sofas, feed him, he’d nod off and the lovely ladies would bring me a buttered tea cake and a bucket of tea. I would then nod off 😁
M & S was horrid, with hard, plastic chairs. Had a soft spot for JS ever since.

Ohflippineck · 05/09/2019 20:51

16, not w6!

I really like the cafe in my local Sainsbury's. It's usually quiet, the staff are lovely and it's nice on a Sunday morning to go for a bacon sarnie and a latte Smile

RossPoldarkFan · 05/09/2019 21:11

I think it must vary depending where you live. I find M&S have 2 kinds of café and both have good service with a limited choice of hot food. My local large Sainsbury's café has cooked food and a very limited choice of sandwiches. The service is awful, incredibly slow and the food is not very good,, despite the store having a wide range of good food to buy.

ShadyLady53 · 05/09/2019 21:22

Sainsburys cafe is horrendous in my home town! Disgusting food, poor coffee, boring choices, depressing environment (all that orange and brown).

M&S feels brighter, cleaner, better tasting choices and range of food for those with intolerances, much better coffee. The CAKE Hmm is infinitely superior!

There’s no comparison in my opinion.

Ghostpost · 05/09/2019 21:36

Those aren't nice socks. They will wash very badly and within a few weeks will be as stiff as boards.

Bloody hell..that was a shit afternoon off work then wasn’t it? Thanks for the warning.

Yes. But you could walk down to their food hall and buy the same cake, ALL OF IT, for the price of one slice they’re selling it for in the cafe.
Right now, M&S cakes is the only thing I’m admiring them for.

@ghostpost sorry, cake or no cake (I wouldn’t want a whole one anyway lol) I’ve never been in a Sainsburys cafe that wasn’t a dump. Like I said it’s just so much more depressing than M&S cafes are. Every Sunday Sainsbury’s is the nearest place in town for coffee with family and every Sunday we always drive out of the area to go somewhere else because it’s so disappointing.

PinkBuffalo · 05/09/2019 22:47

Yanbu! We don't have a sainsburys or M&s but they are both at the shopping centre that's closest. Sainsburys cafe wins hands down. Something for everyone and I'm a very fussy eater and would always be happy there. Never saw anything I wanted in the M&s one.
I used to agree with pps about morrisons, but our local one has gone really downhill. All meals served Luke warm (practically raw/frozen in some cases) and dreadful "service". Our local Facebook page is all over it, people are really upset. But it's really bad at the mo, so won't be going there until they sort it out. Shame as they used to be very good.

Wallabyone · 05/09/2019 22:53

I actually think most of the cakes can't be bought in the food hall-they taste completely different and are much bigger. I like our M&S cafe, they do bagels and salmon, decent salads, my kids like the food and it's good for a quick lunch on the go.

YanTanTethera01 · 05/09/2019 23:25

Sainsbury's cafe is gross (once served me raw pasta). M & S is only good for a snack. Tesco is full of special people who bite their nails and drop them into the food. Waitrose has the best coffee. Morrisons is like a truck stop. Asda (if you can find a cafe) is filthy.

neonglow · 05/09/2019 23:27

LIDL bakery is by far the best bakery out of all the supermarkets weirdly

Mymycherrypie · 05/09/2019 23:29

M&S cafe cakes seem to be taller? I really liked the strawberries and cream one they had out for summer.

The Sainsbury’s near us just has so many issues. The fridge stinks of wee because it breaks down all the time, the selection of sandwiches is tiny, the 2 or 3 cakes on offer are just what you can buy on their patisserie and they are just basic pastries like at a work meeting, the coffee is dish water, the newer staff try but the old guard just skulk about moaning about peoples trollies being in the way, but they’ve taken the trolley park away. Can you buy a bacon sandwich after 10.30am? No, but they will sell you two slices of bread and 2 rashers of bacon and you are free to assemble it yourself, for twice the cost. I’ve sent it back more than once for being green. They’ve just taken out all the good sofas and put in hard chairs. I used to really like it, since the Asda business it’s gone swiftly downhill, but the whole store has to be honest. The only plus points are that you get a good portion of proper porridge, and the fruit toast is tasty.

PickAChew · 05/09/2019 23:29

Sainsburys cafes are noisy but the food is reasonable.

M&S cafes are just fucking slow because it takes them 10 minutes to make a bloody coffee. I'd rather pop to the foodhall, grab a sarnie, and eat it on a bench. Or just go to Pret, where it's nicer and cheaper.

Notagainsusan · 05/09/2019 23:33

Sainsbury's katsu curry 🙌🙌🙌🙌

Deadlysinner · 05/09/2019 23:57

M&S is sooo slooowwwww! I actually quite like the Primark cafe - not a huge range but generally pretty empty and quick! John Lewis is definitely the worst - I hate their self-service coffee machines!

Sweetpea55 · 06/09/2019 06:46

The one at my local Sainsbury's is pretty grim. Iv only ever had a toasted tea cake at M&S and had no idea they did chips. I had a sausage bun in Asda which was ok-ish.Lots of folks seem to like Morrisons

BeanBag7 · 06/09/2019 06:55

I wouldn't expect to be able to buy a lasagne in a cafe. Jacket potato or panini perhaps but not full on meals.
