Worse than Brexit. How can we have fallen so low? ‘Thing’ doesn’t make any sense!

Some rules of grammar are more fluid, which is precisely what I said. I never once said it isn't important to learn those rules but in some cases there are disputes and conflictions, which does (and has) made SATS difficult to grade and notoriously contentious.

We absolutely do NOT live in a doggy dog world.
However:
In summary: Another think coming is the older of the two, dating in use to the mid-19th century, and originated in British English. Another thing coming appears to have come about in American English several decades later, probably as a result of confusion regarding the original phrase. Another thing is the more recent turn of phrase and now is more common, though it is frequently criticized.

Poor old Judas Priest. I blame him.

diddl · 06/09/2019 15:14

From Isocsecles link-

"Both expressions are used to tell a person that they're wrong and should consider changing their mind."

How can you change your mind without thinking again?

So how can "thing" ever make any sense?

Goatinthegarden · 06/09/2019 17:58

I can’t be bothered reading the whole thread, so maybe someone else has said this, but I thought the phrase was;

‘If you think that, you have another thought coming.’

ellzebellze · 06/09/2019 18:06

Pedent's Corner

This brings me joy on what has otherwise been a rather bad day.

IsaMatilda · 06/09/2019 18:10

You're kidding, right? Please say this is sarcasm or I might just give up on our education system entirely.

S1naidSucks · 06/09/2019 18:18

I’m not very academic, OP, but I’m completely with you on this.

‘Another thing coming’ needs to be put in room 101 along with ‘I would of

The joke rested on the presumption of a populace that was literate enough to know it was awkward and therefore to see the humour in it, like many of those kind of jokes from the 20th century

If you think the current day populace is literate enough to see the wordplay and humour in it you've got another think coming.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 06/09/2019 18:32

@BrittleJoys please can you direct me to Pedants Corner as I think it will be home from home...

Butchyrestingface · 06/09/2019 18:47

40 yo Scot here. Voracious reader from childhood. It's always been "another thinG coming" round my neck of the woods. Not a recent thinK/G.

If you think I'm going to change now, you've got another thinG coming. 😈

koshkat · 06/09/2019 18:59

pmsl at 'doggy-dog' world and the preachy poster who thought she was correcting another's racism whilst completely missing the point!

It is 'think' people. I have never even heard anyone say 'thing'. Good grief.

browneyes77 · 06/09/2019 19:06

I’ve always said “you’ve got another thing coming”. It’s what my mom and nan always said, usually when I was being told off Grin

I’ve never heard anyone say ‘think’ instead of ‘thing’. Maybe it’s a regional thing?

LucieFurr · 06/09/2019 19:28

It’s thing, not think

Geschwister4 · 06/09/2019 19:41

If you think it is thing then I would go over this thread with a fine tooth comb if I was you.

Grates teeth.

DontFeedTheCatCake · 06/09/2019 19:43

It’s thing, not think

Aaargh no, it isn't. Look at the links posted up thread. It's think.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 06/09/2019 19:45

It’s think you fuckers! THINK!

Flowerseverywhere · 06/09/2019 19:46

This has blown my mind. I have ALWAYS thought it was thing and that made sense to me, not that I gave it much thought. I need to rethink some things now...

ForalltheSaints · 06/09/2019 19:49

Jacob Rees-Mogg should be dealing with this instead of bad mouthing doctors using parliamentary privilege.

Lozzat85 · 06/09/2019 20:21

Oh god I am so uncouth I always thought it was another thing Confused

LucieFurr · 06/09/2019 20:34

It’s thing you fuckers! THING

winniestone37 · 06/09/2019 20:37

I have never in my life heard this saying Shock Can someone put in context please????

Wehttam · 06/09/2019 20:45

The majority of fools debating and wasting their time with this probably voted Leave. 😒🙄

BoudicasBoudoir · 06/09/2019 20:48

Think. Think. THINK!!!
It’s always been think.
