Worse than Brexit. How can we have fallen so low? ‘Thing’ doesn’t make any sense!

@crazylady7 oh YOU!!! GrinGrin

kjhkj · 05/09/2019 09:40

Also, that is not worse than people who say "draws" instead of "drawers".

Of course its drawers but how do you know when people are saying it incorrectly? In my accent both sound exactly the same.

MyCatsHat · 05/09/2019 09:40

In a few years "mischevious" and "chester draws" will probably be in the dictionary. I hate them but if a lot of people use them that's what happens... 😱

ptumbi · 05/09/2019 09:42

Of course it's think! Why would a thing be coming?

Nobody reads any more, they all adopt phrases that they hear without ever seeing written down. - Totally agree. No one reads. Hence the 'would of' - how do people get through school thinking it's 'would of'? It makes NO sense. I've seen posters saying that they are off to uni - and they still write 'would of'. Angry

I teach English to Chinese kids and after 5 years of English even they know how to use English better than the English speakers do.

It's a race to the bottom.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 05/09/2019 09:44

I'd always thought it was thing. Probably because it used to be hollered at me following a telling off at best or a smack at worst, and the thing was definitely the persons hand.

It's only recently I've ever heard of it being think. Both make sense to me. I suppose it varies depending on delivery.

Carthage · 05/09/2019 09:45

Oh hell, I didn't know 'you've got another thing coming' was now a thing!

I've only just about unclenched my jaw from 'could of' or 'would of'.

And chester draws makes me want to rock backwards and forwards.

steppemum · 05/09/2019 09:45

19NearlyGranny, doggy dog world, comes from Snoop Dog. It sums up life for many black, poor, Americans (and no doubt other nations).

Heaven forbid that we recognise any culture/sayings/language that doesn't spring from white, at least MC men.

The point is that the phrase is:
dog-eat-dog world.

The phrase has been around for a loooong time.
People just hear it and then write it as doggy dog.
Not sure where Snoop Dog comes into it, other than that he uses it!

ptumbi · 05/09/2019 09:46

In the same vein - I've seen a poster write about her 'wrestlers night' Shock and how she'd 'spiro'd into depression'....

Does this happen in other languages? I've never seen it in German, or in the French I have.

It's depressing.

steppemum · 05/09/2019 09:51

part of the problem is that we think Estuary English is the 'best' way to talk.
Anyone who speaks properly is 'too posh'
All celebs downgrade thei voices/accents to sound more accessible.

So we have a situation where it is 'better' to talk badly, than to talk well.

MrKlaw · 05/09/2019 09:51

wait - surely its meant to be 'thing'? Like ' you're wrong - the thing you're thinking about won't come, it'll be something else'.

I've never heard 'another think' coming

Is this opposite day? Are you squidward? Are you squidward now?

noblegiraffe · 05/09/2019 09:52

I am going to head over to Pedent’s Corner, because apparently I belong there

No one has picked me up on this and now I’m worried you’re all just thinking ‘you can head over there all you like but they won’t let you in!’

OP posts:
MyCatsHat · 05/09/2019 09:54

"When the next big thing comes along"
"Something amazing is just around the corner"
"Tomorrow there'll probably be yet another unexpected thing coming my way for me to deal with"

We use "thing" like this all the time - that's why "another thing coming" sounds perfectly natural and normal to me. Whereas "another think coming" sounds awkward and not how we normally use language - it's kind of like how a 2yo might put it.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 05/09/2019 09:56

This is why the electorate can't be trusted 😁. THINK! It's THINK!

My worst one is an old colleague used to like a 'wonder around the shops' at lunchtime. 🤔

PontificatingPsych · 05/09/2019 09:57

I'm astounded by the responses! And even the question! Shock

I have never, ever heard anyone say "Another think coming". As GrimGirl pointed out, it doesn't even make sense - surely it would be "Another thought coming"?

But then again I don't think I've ever heard anyone say "If you think that, you've got another thing coming". Instead it's been more specific, eg.
"If you think that's the worst part, you've got another thing coming".

Or
"If you think preparing the nursery is tiring, you've got another thing coming when baby arrives!"
Both basically meaning: "That is not the most difficult thing, you have another thing coming that will be harder! Brace yourself!"

That was always my understanding of it anyway... Mind blown.

crosspelican · 05/09/2019 10:04

OMG. I genuinely thought it was "thing" and I'm 40 with more than one graduate degree so I have no excuse at all. Just going to slink off in shame now. Blush

ThunderMum · 05/09/2019 10:07

No one reads anymore? Reads what? I read a lot, always thought it was “thing” and have clearly never seen this phrase written down to make me think otherwise. Please could someone point me in the direction of what I should have read?

Also, language evolves. Even if it was originally “think”, it clearly isn’t anymore if most people believed it was “thing”.

MusterMark · 05/09/2019 10:07

"Think is a verb, not a noun." Let me have a think about that.

MashedSpud · 05/09/2019 10:10

It’s another thing coming.

Jesus wept.

Bezalelle · 05/09/2019 10:11

Nothing could ever be worse than the idiotic "I could care less."

If you COULD care less, then you clearly care a bit, don't you, you lobotomised shitlark?

Yutes · 05/09/2019 10:13

It’s an attempt at humour. “You’ve got another think thought coming”

Surely?Hmm

noblegiraffe · 05/09/2019 10:15

Even if it was originally “think”, it clearly isn’t anymore if most people believed it was “thing”.

Does this mean that we actually live in a world where ‘doggy-dog world’ could legitimately become the correct phrase if enough people get it wrong?

OP posts:
MyCatsHat · 05/09/2019 10:17

No one reads anymore?

Team "thing" here and I've spent my whole life reading. I work in the book/media industry and have an Oxbridge 1st in English lit. I've read things most people don't know exist :o However I don't remember ever seeing this phrase written down, except in arguments about it (or if I have seen it, it must have been written as "thing" because I didn't register it as odd).

It's probably because it's mostly only used in spoken English and that allows the hearer to interpret it different ways.

GlasshouseStoneThrower · 05/09/2019 10:19

It's 'another think coming', but 'thing' makes sense and 'think' doesn't.

False.

'If you THINK I am going to accept this outrageous slip in linguistic standards, you've got another THINK coming.'

The phrase means 'if you think X, you will have to reconsider and come up with another thought, because you are wrong'.

And 'think' is a noun. Consider 'I'm having a think about grammar'. In that sentence, the verbs are 'am' and 'have', and the nouns are 'think' and 'grammar'.

It's incredibly simple, and yet people will blindly defend the wrong answer. It's mad.

diddl · 05/09/2019 10:20

If "thing" is now acceptable then surely "of" soon will be?

ThunderMum · 05/09/2019 10:21

Does this mean that we actually live in a world where ‘doggy-dog world’ could legitimately become the correct phrase if enough people get it wrong?

Yes... Evolution of language. The only example I can think of is the word “awful”; it used to mean “full of awe”. Leave it with me, I’m sure I’ll come up with more.
