Worse than Brexit. How can we have fallen so low? ‘Thing’ doesn’t make any sense!

I can't work out if you're being sarcastic or not?

BrittleJoys · 05/09/2019 09:09

Come over to Pedants’ Corner, where we are already wailing and gnashing our teeth.

AlunWynsKnee · 05/09/2019 09:10

noble there's a thread in Pedants' Corner that will make you feel better about the world :)

Mitebiteatnite · 05/09/2019 09:11

It's 'another think coming', but 'thing' makes sense and 'think' doesn't.

Think is a verb, not a noun. So how can you have a 'think' coming to/for/at you? A 'thing' however, is a noun. It's perfectly plausible to have a 'thing' coming to/for/at you.

I hate the phrase because it's so nonsensical, so I just don't say it.

Whatwouldbigfatfannydo · 05/09/2019 09:11

YABU if that's not sarcasm. Also, that is not worse than people who say "draws" instead of "drawers".
I've even seen "chester draws". Makes my blood boil.

crazylady7 · 05/09/2019 09:12

i hope your joking Grin Grin Grin

BertsFriend · 05/09/2019 09:15

The stats for this are the same as his poll. I'm off to pedants corner, how on earth does 'thing' make any kind of sense? It's like 'Well, if you missed that plane there's another apple coming'

Uniformuniformuniform · 05/09/2019 09:16

Surely it depends on what is being spoken about. If the person said I think x,y or z. Then yes you have another think coming.
However if they were talking About something else then it would be thing. It's really a non issue. Everyone knows what you are talking about. It's not even 'english' it's a saying someone once said in America and it stuck. Plus everything mitebite said

steppemum · 05/09/2019 09:17

It's 'another think coming', but 'thing' makes sense and 'think' doesn't.

NO! It is thing that doesn't maske sense.

It is the last half of a longer phrase
If you THINK that at then you've got another THINK coming.

It means - THINK again.

thing makes no sense at all

as to the verb /noun thing, think can be a noun too, as in the phrase. - Have a good think about your behaviour.
in this sentence to make it a verb you would say
Think hard about your behaviour

noblegiraffe · 05/09/2019 09:17

If you think that, then you’ve got another think coming makes sense.

Another thing, what was the first thing? You’ve got a thing coming? You what?

I am going to head over to Pedent’s Corner, because apparently I belong there. Grin

sorry random extra at in there

NearlyGranny · 05/09/2019 09:19

Think makes perfect sense! It can be a noun or a verb, and in the expression, it's a noun. Have you never said, "I'll need to have a think about that," or, "Just have a long, hard think before you decide."?

I blame the proliferation of dodgy US English for this shambles, along with other misheard sayings like, "It's a doggy dog world."

Just don't get me started on people who don't know the difference between infer and imply...

Yet this is how language changes and yes, I am a pedant!

CallmeAngelina · 05/09/2019 09:20

We had a thread a couple of years ago on exactly this and it ended up in Classics.
The final consensus was that it is THINK.

EspressoX10 · 05/09/2019 09:22

Foreign here.

I know it's "think" but the syntax of the phrase "you have another think coming" is so very hideous I refuse to use it.

At least "another thing coming" sounds right to my ears.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 05/09/2019 09:25

Of course it's think! No need for consensus or a vote on it, it's always been think and the use of thing instead is a very recent error getting wide coverage through social media.

Doggy dog world is wonderful, though.

Ponoka7 · 05/09/2019 09:25

If Judas Priest are ok with Another thing comin' then so am I.

But actually as always said, language evolves and now both are acceptable.

AmIThough · 05/09/2019 09:27

I always thought it was thing too...
but think makes sense now it's been explained!

Ponoka7 · 05/09/2019 09:27

@19NearlyGranny, doggy dog world, comes from Snoop Dog. It sums up life for many black, poor, Americans (and no doubt other nations).

Heaven forbid that we recognise any culture/sayings/language that doesn't spring from white, at least MC men.

noblegiraffe · 05/09/2019 09:28

now both are acceptable.

No, it’s still unacceptable, just lots of people apparently don’t know it.

Love doggy-dog world. What on earth are people thinking?

OP posts:
noblegiraffe · 05/09/2019 09:30

How can doggy-dog world sum up life for black Americans in a way that dog-eat-dog world wouldn’t? Confused

OP posts:
Zaphodsotherhead · 05/09/2019 09:31

But that's just it, OP, people aren't thinking at all! Nobody reads any more, they all adopt phrases that they hear without ever seeing written down. That's why we've got an outbreak of 'I want gunna let her get away wiv that!'

Leave the door open at Pedants' Corner. I'll be right behind you...

GrimGirl · 05/09/2019 09:32

You have another think coming?

Wouldn't that be .. You have another thought coming?

Grin
MyCatsHat · 05/09/2019 09:37

Ha ha I'm so glad "thing" is winning! I know it's meant to be "think" (have had this argument on here before, and someone unearthed the history of it) but IMO basically "thing" has takin over because "another think coming" sounds bloody stupid.

I have always said "thing" and I'm middle aged, so it's not new. At this point, it's probably one of those examples where an alternative has taken over, or at least there are two versions and they're both acceptable.

supersop60 · 05/09/2019 09:37

GrimGirl you'd think so.
