Spotted this in the sun.

Many allow 88kg (13.8 stone) for men, 70kg (11 stone) for women and 35kg (5.5 stone) for children

This bit confused me a little bit, is that their estimate they use for calculating fuel consumption? My partner and children weigh more than that estimate

I wonder what their weight limit will be? 🤔
And I can see shit will hit the fan when/if this does come into force, and passengers are excluded from the flight

Easy. If you're a woman who weighs over 11kg, just self-identify as a man. Problem solved.

OtraCosaMariposa · 05/09/2019 08:44

11 stone. Not 11kg.

IAmALazyArse · 05/09/2019 08:46

YABU yo read the S*n and take anything from there even remotely seriously

WorraLiberty · 05/09/2019 08:48

I can't see them being excluded from the flight.

I imagine they'll just have to pay more, just as they would if their cases weighed more?

I imagine it would be sorted in advance as they'll know how much they weigh before they get to the airport.

Herocomplex · 05/09/2019 08:48

There’s loads of things they could get rid of to reduce weight from aircraft before they started refusing boarding to the people who are literally paying for the plane to be flying in the first place.

tigger001 · 05/09/2019 08:49

I have always said this should happen, as I said it should be a personal allowance including your body.
I could take loads more bags and shoes.
I didn't actually think it would ever be a serious consideration 😂😂

myself2020 · 05/09/2019 08:49

i would love that. i really don’t see why as a healthy weight person i should pay for my 10 suitcase when another person brings waaaay more on board with being (very) overweight.
(medical equipment etc goes for free, so so should be weight for people who have an actual medical condition like Prader–Willi syndrome)

swingofthings · 05/09/2019 08:51

Oh and I are just under 20 stone together maybe that's why we rarely get charged for being over the luggage allowance!

LizziesTwin · 05/09/2019 08:52

It’s an average - my adult daughters and I don’t weigh as much as 70kg, my husband weighs less than 88kg. On average the airline can allow 70kg for women as there are enough short/slim women weighing 45-55kg to cancel out those who weigh 90-100kg. Only one of my friends weighs as much as 70kg, we are all v active and lucky enough not to have health conditions which have caused ill-health leading to weight gain.

But at 5'9", my healthy weight range goes up to 11.5st?

MrsCasares · 05/09/2019 08:54

If they pay extra will they be entitled to bigger seats?

pickme · 05/09/2019 08:54

Clearly the sun has never heard of the Equality Act.

PeevedNiamh · 05/09/2019 09:00

Well I'm short so I think they should take that into account too then, I clearly need less leg room so should pay less 🤣

DoomsdayCult · 05/09/2019 09:04

I am in favour of weighing passengers while holding their carry ons discreetly at check in for one reason only- Safety. I would not do it to charge extra to higher than average weight passengers.
The reason is that when engineers designed the planes, they used an average weight per passenger in calculating the maximum load a plane can take to fly safely. This is the reason our luggage is weighed. Many airlines have over the years, refitted these planes to add more seats by shrinking seat size and leg room so they can get an extra 20-30 people on board. At the same time, people are getting fatter so the average weight per passenger has gone up. In addition, many passengers get cheeky with checking luggage AND hauling carry on items that are heavy. These two trends do have me concerned that some planes may be flying at or over the maximum load.

NearlyGranny · 05/09/2019 09:10

They do this already if you fly to or from the IoS from Newquay or Lands End in the little islander! It's to trim the plane and they tell you where you have to sit. Being on the generously padded side, ahem, I was a bit anxious, but nobody can see the readout except the person checking you in and they make a discreet note and don't yell out things like, "How much?! What a porker!"

chantico · 05/09/2019 09:10

You will be treated according to the sex sited in your DS port

Do you really think people will self identify and change their entire official persona, simply to avoid paying a flight supplement?

I'm more interested in how they will define a child. My skinny, low BMI teenager weighs way more than 35kgs

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 05/09/2019 09:11

Yeah, I thinking that - at my height 11stone is still within the healthy range, so are they taking height into account?

EssentialHummus · 05/09/2019 09:11

I’m broadly in favour of a total allocated weight (including luggage), but really the issue of competing passenger rights/what to do when A is forced to sit next to grossly overweight B who takes up 1.5 seats needs addressing (and not by the red tops).

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 05/09/2019 09:12

Sorry, I meant to quote thecatsthecats there.

Templetonstunafish · 05/09/2019 09:12

Obviously bollocks. It's in the Sun fgs.

Kokeshi123 · 05/09/2019 09:12

For safety reasons, yes, passengers should be weighed. Why not weigh passengers and their luggage together, with a single limit for the whole lot, to save embarrassment?

I actually had to do a weigh-in when boarding a tiny 7-seater plane in Papua New Guinea. I thought it was hilarious, but my friend who was with me was super embarrassed and made me look away when they were weighing her (silly, she wasn't even overweight!).... Weighing us with our luggage together might have been more tactful....!

Herocomplex · 05/09/2019 09:15

The only problem with weight would be at take-off though Doomsday surely? By the time the plane lands its shed its fuel load anyway?

tabulahrasa · 05/09/2019 09:16

“But at 5'9", my healthy weight range goes up to 11.5st?”

12... 5’8” is 11 1/2...

“we are all v active and lucky enough not to have health conditions which have caused ill-health leading to weight gain.“

Or not be tall...

jamoncrumpet · 05/09/2019 09:17

Non

Fatted · 05/09/2019 09:18

My dad told me a story about how once he was flying (I can't remember where now) and after they weighed the luggage, they then weighed the passengers. This was over 40 years ago now so its not anything new.

It is science. In order to have enough fuel for the plane, they have to know how heavy it and its contents are. If not the plane will run out of fuel and crash. Anyone who wants to read more into than that and take offense is projecting their own issues. And I say this as a female over the weight limit posted above.
