To ask for your bar shampoo and conditioner recommendations

Doing my bit to cut down on single use plastics. Looking at making the leap into bars of shampoo and conditioner. My issue is I have very fine hair, of which the roots get greasy very easily!

Can anyone hit me with some recommendations please!

Not answering your question, but how do you deal with bars? Do you have to get a soap-dish to stop it turning to slime ?

Yellowpolkadot · 05/09/2019 00:03

You can get cases for them 😊

I use empty Steamcream tins for mine, they're just the right size for most of the round ones and pretty too!

owlalwaysloveyou · 05/09/2019 00:37

I've only tried friendly soap brand shampoo bar you can find on wild earth beauty website. They're great. Bar replaces I'd guess around 3 bottles of shampoo for me, I dont have to use any conditioner anymore despite having quite wild frizzy hair, reduced my psoriasis on my scalp and personally didn't have much of a problem with hair becoming greasy quicker in change over period as is usually warned when switching to these free from type shampoos Grin

ChaoticKate · 05/09/2019 04:41

I use something called beauty kubes on my hair, which is also very fine, and they work brilliantly. They actually make it feel a bit thicker and aren’t difficult to manage like soap.

MyOtherProfile · 05/09/2019 04:45

Several people recommended this one to me and it has worked a treat. I had fine, greasy hair but it feels thicker now and I have to wash it less often because it doesn't get greasy as quickly.

Definitely Lush and I use conditioner bars from Crystal Cole, wouldn’t go back to bottles

I have hair like yours. I’ve tried everything and I can’t find anything that works. The closest I could get to not being a ball of grease all day was the shampoo Kubes. The hunt continues

booktrotter · 05/09/2019 07:06

Hi I have v v v fine hair too and have just started using Lush Flyaway Hair in an effort to reduce plastic. Very impressed

metnums · 05/09/2019 08:02

Ethique is a fantastic brand. They are based in NZ. I particularly like their kiwi shampoo bar.

berlinbabylon · 05/09/2019 08:26

Getting bars from NZ doesn't seem very eco-friendly - I'd say you would be better off using a recyclable plastic bottle of shampoo made in the UK.

But there are plenty of shampoo bars made in the UK too - I have used one called Friendly Soap but it doesn't really work that well, I wonder if they work better in soft water areas. However, our local zero waste shop has just announced they are stocking another brand made fairly locally, so I might have a go with that one (don't know name but you could google it, it's made in Ash Vale in Surrey).

Kokeshi123 · 05/09/2019 08:43

I have fine greasy hair too! The Lush ones work well for me. The conditioner--not so much. I think bar conditioners are a bit tricky, though I am open to recommendations if anyone has any alternatives.

Wish wish wish that the Body Shop had not sold out and lost the plot--if the "old style" Body Shops were still there, we would all have the option of popping in and refilling our bottles of conditioner in the high street branches, and the Body Shop would be making a fortune.....

metnums · 05/09/2019 08:52

@berlinbabylon There is UK stock available. You can purchase in store or order online and they do "zero waste" shipping.

I have fine hair and I find the shampoo bars work really well. My hair is soft, clean and there is no greasy residue.

They also do deodorant bars, solid moisturiser and cleanser bars which I have not tried. The conditioners are nice as are the ginger face scrub cubes.

BoggiesBonnieBelle · 05/09/2019 08:56

I love the Lush honey shampoo bar. It works for me without a conditioner, which is just as well because I haven't found a bar conditioner which I like yet.

thecatsthecats · 05/09/2019 08:56

Ooh, reading with interest.

Especially as someone pointed out that bar shampoo goes through customs no problem.

Mrsducky88 · 05/09/2019 09:00

I use one from bath bubbles and beyond (weirdly they stock it at some garden centres like Dobbies). No need for conditioner either. Adjustment period of around 2 weeks when hair switched between dry and greasy but no problem since.

onlyconnect · 21/09/2019 16:50

Sunnyjack I have bought conditioner bars from Crystal Cole and find they make my hair feel sticky. Do you have any tips for using them please? I find it hard to get the conditioner on and then hard to get off

ahagwearsapointybonnet · 22/09/2019 17:30

Thanks for the Ethique recommendation, I am trying some of their ones out at the moment! Also if anyone else wants to try them (or is already a fan), they are on buy one, get one half-price at Holland & Barrett just now.

If anyone has found a really good 2-in-one shampoo/conditioner bar I would be very grateful for a recommendation though (sadly Ethique don't seem to do one as yet). I used to use a Lush one but have stopped buying Lush, but would like to find another as it did save time and hassle in the morning.

ForTheLoveOfCatFood · 22/09/2019 17:49

Another vote for lush honey fab stuff I don’t use conditioner just the shampoo

Get a tin to store it in, lasts me ages

Yellowpolkadot · 22/09/2019 18:21

I went for a seanik bar with a cork holder 😊 seems to be working well! Might need to look at a conditioner for occasional use though. Will check out the recommendations in Holland and Barrett's in the week!

I use various shampoo bars from lush - have been for about 18 months. Haven’t yet found a conditioner bar that doesn’t leave my hair sticky which seems to be a common theme

Mouikey · 22/09/2019 18:54

Lusgh bars are lovely mainly because they have SLS in many of them (not all) which can be made with palm oil.

I recently bought a bar from the local market and whilst it is lovely my hair was rank - apparently some people must transition to shampoo bars and it can take a while. My hair felt really greasy mainly because (I understand) that my scalp is producing too much sebum for the shampoo bar. Some use an apple cider vinegar rinse after to help and to soften the hair too.

I’ve given up, mainly because the fresh bottle of shampoo called me and I need to use it before I go plastic free for shampoo/conditioner.

Finding a good bar conditioner is apparently like finding the holy grail!!!

RandomMess · 22/09/2019 18:55

I ended up with horrid dandruff so after several months had to go back to anti dandruff shampoo..,

Yellowpolkadot · 22/09/2019 19:54

I'm currently mid bottle of shampoo and conditioner, so have the ability to go back if needed 😂 I did use a bit of conditioner this evening as my hair felt like it needed it! Will search for a bar this week

OP posts:
hidinginthenightgarden · 22/09/2019 20:02

I used a lush bar which was okay. DH has been complaining though as realistically they are a little more than bottles and you have to keep hopping out the shower to put them away so they don't melt away.
We went back to a bottle this week because I am sick of his moaning and my hair is admittedly much better.
I may try again if they have some promo codes around xmas.
