To ask how Brexit will affect your job?

I work in financial services (investments) and I am wondering how Brexit will affect our company.. I don't know if I have anything to be worried about. I have a basic knowledge of what's going on but not how will it impact my day to day life.

How do you think Brexit will affect your job?

Public sector. Brexit wont affect my job but Boris has already said i'll be culled .

MaximusHeadroom · 04/09/2019 18:46

I am currently working for an international company in another EU country and will have to apply for a work Visa to continue living and working here.

We have offices throughout Europe, including the UK and staff are encouraged to do short term transfers to other offices which will now be more complex as I would need a work Visa for each country since our contract transfer to the local office each time. We had planned to return to the UK but DH is from another EU country and would not be comfortable returning there in the current climate.

I am lucky that my job itself is pretty Brexit proof and my company are very sympathetic to my situation

Dyrne · 04/09/2019 18:51

It’s already causing a massive headache as we’re in a highly regulated industry and we’re having to put together shedloads of contingency plans just in case Brexit causes delays in the supply chain.

If it happens then all our legal documents will need to change to reflect the wording of whatever legislation the UK will bring in to replace the EU legislation we’re bound by. Even if the UK government rubber stamp everything across there’s still processes that will need to be updated and various document amendments to ensure it’s all still legal.

What a ballache.

KatyaK · 04/09/2019 18:53

I'm a property solicitor, so I'm very much hoping the housing market doesn't crash.

familycourtq · 04/09/2019 18:54

Not seeing any firm news yet - but there does seem to be some nervousness over the current shitshow which I suspect may stop people signing off the budget for new work. Private sector - self-employed in business services.

VicSynix · 04/09/2019 19:02

If its no deal and the economy crashes, then I think our business will go bust. We've already seen reduced sales over the last year as customers simply aren't spending their cash, whether it's direct or via shops. In fact from last September onwards our sales have dropped by about 25% which has seriously affected our cash flow and meant that in turn we're not spending money on other local businesses.

AmeliaE · 04/09/2019 19:06

Working for a big European manufactured. One of those that appeared on the news telling everyone about the risks of Brexit.
I had to move abroad. The company already lost a huge EU-funded project by then. The logistic, legal, HR team etc is having a bad nightmare trying to work out what the heck is going to happen and how the supply chain is going to be affected. Investment stopped a few years ago due to uncertainty.
It's pretty f** up really, but difficult to show on the news. And when they tried to warn everyone they said it was "project fear".

ArtichokeAardvark · 04/09/2019 19:08

HR in the city. Brexit won't affect my job but this neverending uncertainty is having a major negative impact. We can and do employ EU nationals, and will continue to do so if we leave the EU. I just need Westminster to make their effing minds up so I don't have to redo all the visa paperwork every time they delay it!

Ylvamoon · 04/09/2019 19:10

Used to work as translator... weak pound due to Brexit cost me my job 18months ago.

postmanwatcher · 04/09/2019 19:10

We live in NI and 85% of our services are sold to ROI. We have seen a down turn in long term contracts as ROI businesses are preparing for Brexit with support of their lEA's.

Our local trade is steady but cautious. Our LEA's are I'll prepared to cope with questions re Brexit. The practicalities of a hard border could be catastrophic for us and many other businesses as we cross the border 3-4 times per week.

postmanwatcher · 04/09/2019 19:11

We have lost 2 local government contracts which we held for 5 years after they lost EU funding.

AlexaShutUp · 04/09/2019 19:11

My job is being made redundant on 1 November. The date is not a coincidence. Brexit is a disaster for my sector.

wishihadagoodone · 04/09/2019 19:15

I manage a community project which is 100% EU funded. We're all out of a job when our funding expires in March 2022. We've been told they'll honour existing funding so at least we have a timeline.

Unless we can find a funder willing to take us on of course. But my project is in an area of massive deprivation so there will be a free-for-all with all the other EU funded projects, all scrambling for alternative funding and the pot just isn't big enough.

And I wouldn't hold my breath at the government stepping in to help either.

It's a shame because (in my very humble opinion!!) its a fantastic project which meets its outcomes and really makes a difference to its service users.

But sure, we'll have our blue passports back again🙄

acquiescence · 04/09/2019 19:17

I’m a nurse. We have already seen the effect. Large amount of EU nationals, fantastic and hand-working nurses, have returned home or moved elsewhere where they will not feel at risk. Over recent years the funding for nurse training has been greatly reduced so we have a national shortage of UK trained nurses as it is.

The potential for issues with critical medication are massive. We could see people becoming severely if they are unable to access regular medication and we are certainly going to see pressure as services as people worry about this. There are significant cost impositions to this.

GraceVanPelt · 04/09/2019 19:17

I'm a translator and am currently doing better than I was, but I have no idea whether my clients will want to continue working with me come Brexit.

@ylvamoon I'm sorry you've lost your job.

MT2017 · 04/09/2019 19:20

I work in education so not anticipating any issue - but DH works for a European company which has sites across Europe including the UK. If they leave we are screwed.

HattieHu · 04/09/2019 19:21

I work in insurance and I'll have to do bloody green cards every time a client goes to EU.

Sunshinelollipops1 · 04/09/2019 19:21

I’m in law and my area won’t be effected. In fact work tends to increase in a depression.

DH in consultancy in financial services so at serious risk. He works for an international firm, which will offer international deployment before if risk of redundancy.

Problem is I can’t work in my area abroad.

So I have a horrible feeling we may end up with DH in Dublin, Amsterdam or Frankfurt for a few years in the week and flying back at weekends.

SewingWarriorQueen76 · 04/09/2019 19:22

I work in the public sector. If Brexit happens, might not have a job. Very scarce skills type of niche so will be stuffed to find anything of same skills or salary.

Rainbowhairdontcare · 04/09/2019 19:26

I work in an online music distribution company. Our users are from around the world (at least 30% are from LatAm). It won't affect us at all.

TheDarkPassenger · 04/09/2019 19:27

I’m not sure Tbh, our Boris talks about wanting to give more money to us and more frontline officers but it could be all talk tbh. Brexit itself I dunno, we’ll always need law enforcement and protection. No one at work bats an eyelid over it tbh 😐

flowerycurtain · 04/09/2019 19:30

Farmer.

In the short term - horrendously and with far reaching effects.

In the long term - people always need to eat.

jesuschristwtf · 04/09/2019 19:36

Won’t affect me in the slightest - my passport is pretty stable and I don’t need a visa for a lot of countries. I’m a permanent resident here anyway and the business I would for will not be affected. No one in my office is worried - there’s about 1500 of us in the UK.

onlymebutdifferent · 04/09/2019 19:38

My job won't be affected at all - in fact we're getting busier every year due to lifestyle.

Hmmmbop · 04/09/2019 19:39

Social Worker with older adults. An industry very reliant on EU migrants for providing care. I'm fully expecting a much higher number of neglect related deaths- older adults not receiving necessary care, missed medication etc.
