Men and snacks

Because it genuinely is only men in my experience who do this.

You have a bowl of some kind of snack food: crisps/nuts etc.

They attack it like it’s the first meal they’ve had in a week. Just eat steadily through them until they’re gone (about 5 minutes or so)

What’s wrong with eating them a bit more casually. So they last through a film for example? It makes me feel like if I want to have anything approaching an equal amount I have to compete and eat fast too.

Yeah we could have separate bowls but it annoys me that there should be a need, I find it uncivilised.

Perhaps it's because I’m French and in the evening we have the crispy things with the apéritif, everyone eats a couple and we close the box and there are still some left for the next time.

My DP has just devoured a big bag of Doritos in the time than it took me to go and get a drink. He is not starving, there was no shortage of dinner. And all my previous partners and male friends have been the same!

I don’t think you’re BU to wonder why people don’t slow down and enjoy their food without making it scarce in 5 minutes.

In fact, it’s recommended to eat slowly (or at least not like someone is going to steal it and it’s your last food), as well as not in front of the tv to lose weight or avoid unwanted weight gain. It takes a little time for the body to know it’s satisfied and tell the brain.

You are wrong about just men though, as it’s men and women, kids too, that treat their bodies like trash cans. I admit I have my weak moments, like when it’s that time of the month. Salty snacks=🏃🏻‍♀️ to see the bottom of the bowl.

Snacks like Doritos are fine, but you’re right. If you’re truly hungry, something nutritious (especially containing protein) is much more ideal.

I never thought about this before but you're right it annoys me so much and it's only men I know of that do this. I feel like I have to compete but I don't want to scoff everything down I want to relax and enjoy my drink or meal. It's actually quite stressful.

I had a boyfriend that would always hoe into his meal. It was gone way before I could finish and then there was nothing for him to do while I ate. I stopped eating in public with him.

Oh God - I think I’d want to drown you.

I prefer crisps to a sandwich! I also smash a bag of crisps like a "man does" so YABU

Poppins2016 · 04/09/2019 01:50

YANBU.

I find it irritating that I have to spell it out to DH: "you eat faster than I do, so please remember to leave me some, I'd like half, please!". I used to find that I could look away and suddenly there would be nothing left...

I really fancy crisps, now!

WaterOffaDucksCrack · 04/09/2019 03:40

Oh god I hate this. DP will eat all "his" snacks (enough for 2 weeks worth usually) in 2 or 3 days. But then start on "my" snacks! They're different because I don't like what he likes and I have a few food allergies so I can't a lot of it anyway. He wouldn't eat the children's snacks though like a pp said they did!

We do buy things to share as well though. Last night he brought out a 200g bar of galaxy chocolate. I got six rectangles. Not six lines, six rectangles. He demolished the rest in a few seconds!

KatherineJaneway · 04/09/2019 06:06

And why do they always leave a few broken bits in the bottom of the bowl - you stuffed 99% of a family size bag of Doritos down there at least finish the job!

Because then they can say 'I didn't finish the bag!'

LoveGrowsWhere · 04/09/2019 06:23

Yanbu except jaffa cakes. I can ho through a packet alone.

Butchyrestingface chocolate coated sunflower seeds from Lidl are a find!

Nope. If I'm hungry at home I go for it. In fact, I would probably just have my own bowl of snacks and dips rather than share. In public I can be more restrained.

In a big bowl of Doritos.

MIdgebabe · 04/09/2019 07:29

It’s two separate issues.speed of eating and sharing nicely.its possible to eat fast but only eat your share. Eating all the snacks is not sharing nice.

JingsMahBucket · 04/09/2019 07:47

@Oliverlet YANBU and I also find it somewhat gross. My OH does this, especially with crisps or chips from the chip shop. I sometimes have to tell him to physically slow down. I don’t know if his dopamine hits are super powerful or what but he goes rabid sometimes. It genuinely makes me worry about him.
