Men and snacks

Because it genuinely is only men in my experience who do this.

You have a bowl of some kind of snack food: crisps/nuts etc.

They attack it like it’s the first meal they’ve had in a week. Just eat steadily through them until they’re gone (about 5 minutes or so)

What’s wrong with eating them a bit more casually. So they last through a film for example? It makes me feel like if I want to have anything approaching an equal amount I have to compete and eat fast too.

Yeah we could have separate bowls but it annoys me that there should be a need, I find it uncivilised.

Perhaps it's because I’m French and in the evening we have the crispy things with the apéritif, everyone eats a couple and we close the box and there are still some left for the next time.

My DP has just devoured a big bag of Doritos in the time than it took me to go and get a drink. He is not starving, there was no shortage of dinner. And all my previous partners and male friends have been the same!

When it comes to dinner i usually serve DH up a larger portion than me - although it's not like he's been working down a bloody mine all day - he sits at a desk! But I often then hear him rooting around in the cupboards for snacks after I've gone to bed!

He ate the bloody tortillas for my chilli beef nachos the other day 😡😡

However snacking on chocolates from the Roses/Celebration tin is of course completely acceptable 🤣😉

EssentialHummus · 03/09/2019 21:03

Could have written your op. I want to scream - you’re clearly hungry! Eat your actual dinner -points- then snack if you want to, don’t demolish all of mine! Anyway, I just do separate bowls now. And multiple packs of whatever tasty thing we like at that point.

itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted · 03/09/2019 21:05

As I bloke I have only one counter observation and it involves women and chocolate.

I think I read somewhere that chocolate scientifically does help to regulate a woman's hormones/emotions so actually it's benefiting you chaps to keep a steady supply on hand! 🤣

(Of course I could have completely made that up whilst diving head first into a tin of roses/celebrations!)

MerryBerryCheesecake · 03/09/2019 21:09

I'm a woman.

I don't eat chocolate at all.

MIdgebabe · 03/09/2019 21:10

I always eat everything quickly, hangover from childhood when I was always starving and seconds would only be available on a first come first served basis.

itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted · 03/09/2019 21:14

@MerryBerryCheesecake
Really? Is that because you don't like the taste or because its not exactly healthy?

I can't imagine not liking/not eating chocolate - it would be like removing a whole food group from my diet 🤣🤣

cacklingmags · 03/09/2019 21:21

I am the greedy sod in my house - nom nom.

Mollypolly2610 · 03/09/2019 21:39

Why does my DH leave a few crumbs in everything he eats? I emptied a pack of Bombay Mix into a jar, we ate some then he added peanuts to it, he ate some more and for a few days there has been a few noodles and nuts in the huge jar. He does this with everything! He will leave one biscuit for weeks!

Butchyrestingface · 03/09/2019 21:43

I’m not fussed about chocolate either.

Crisps, cheese, bread, popcorn, nuts. Would kill for those.

RedForShort · 03/09/2019 21:44

Where did you go for your drink?!

TartanCurtains1 · 03/09/2019 21:47

You're completely right. Even if I do separate bowls, DH will scoff his and then refill so he ends up finishing the bag anyway.

itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted · 03/09/2019 21:50

And why do they always leave a few broken bits in the bottom of the bowl - you stuffed 99% of a family size bag of Doritos down there at least finish the job!

YesQueen · 03/09/2019 22:11

My mum makes the best chocolate cake. It's filled with melted mars bars and fresh cream
Except she rarely makes it because every time she gets mars bars, my dad eats them
I swear he can eat 6 mars bars without blinking as a "light snack". Salad is only eaten in summer and I don't think he's every eaten any form of berries in his life. Never gains a pound EnvyEnvyEnvy
He claimed not to like popcorn and then ate most of mine at the cinema

BillieEilish · 03/09/2019 22:21

I dislike chocolate/sweet things too.

MaryPopppins · 03/09/2019 22:25

We split them.

My DH doesn't stop when he starts.

I like a snack to last.

It's much easier us just splitting whatever it is as otherwise I feel I have to rush to not miss out.

I need this recipe in my life! 😋

YesQueen · 03/09/2019 22:32

@itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted I've tried Angry
"You only get it when I'm dead. I had to wait for it to be passed to me"
Thanks mum HmmGrin

Mother87 · 03/09/2019 22:35

Made the mistake once of having a 'sharing' platter on Valentine's Day with DH (was early days before we were married - wouldn't dream of marking the occasion now😆) DH gobbled 80% of the 'shared' platter whilst I sat there with my open empty mouthGrin

Mother87 · 03/09/2019 22:37

Wholethefrogs well you're BU - chocolate is NOT a snack, it's an essential food group all on it's ownGrinand is supposed to be devoured quickly for maximum impactBlush

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 03/09/2019 22:43

My DH is the same, and he's the same way with chocolate. Will eat a massive sharing bag of crisps and a family-size bar of chocolate in one go. Hmm

BlythesEyes · 03/09/2019 22:44

In that person who eats all my treats before the film starts in the cinema Grin

ELM8 · 03/09/2019 22:50

My husband is TERRIBLE at this.. I've been used to "drinks and nibbles" being a thing in my upbringing where it was rude to eat too many..

DH on the other hand had never really been introduced to the concept of drinks and nibbles - if food was there it was there to be eaten as quickly as possible before someone else gets in there first.

It's taken years of training to try and get him to eat shared snacks at a normal pace and 8 years later I'm still not quite there...

Other way round in our house. The things DH will hoover up in double time can be counted on one hand. Me on the other hand, will run out of sweets before a film even starts at the cinema and I eat my own child's treats behind her back.

It isn't a m/f it's just whether or not you're a greedy fucker I reckon.

Ifyousayso2019 · 03/09/2019 23:34

I hear you OP. DH is a hardcore snacker. I get most annoyed when I buy a nice packet of biscuits during the weekly shop, expected to last us a few weeks. 2 days later when I go into the biscuit box, there’s a 90% chance that the packet is already opened and half empty. I am constantly whinging at him “why can you not make snacks last more than 5 days in this house” Angry
