To not understand the obsession with sweet potato fries?

They are far too sweet and sickly and I just don't get why everyone seems to rave about them. Much prefer ordinary chips.

OP posts:

Not keen on sweet potato unless in chunks in a curry, mashed it has a revoltingly slimy consistency.

LavaLamp5566 · 03/09/2019 21:19

What the heck are sweet potato fries? I am going to have to try them now

Megan2018 · 03/09/2019 21:23

Gestational diabetes has stopped me having chips, sweet potato fries have saved my sanity- love them now!

ConfusedOpinionsHere · 03/09/2019 21:25

I like crinkle Grin Child of the 70s here

CoolcoolcoolcoolcoolNoDoubt · 03/09/2019 21:26

YANBU!! Finally I have found my people.

Sweet potato fries are revolting.

Mummyoflittledragon · 03/09/2019 21:37

I love them. Much nicer than pub chips.

ToPlanZ · 03/09/2019 21:39

Urghhh sweet potato fries!! Awful. Much prefer a proper spud

LaurieMarlow · 03/09/2019 21:40

The sweetness is disgusting, I agree. If you’re going to have chips have proper chips dammit.

Ariela · 03/09/2019 22:20

Not nice. However parsnip chips are a different matter: love them.

multivac · 03/09/2019 22:22

It's a bit like real ale versus lager. Real ale is so much better than keg lager that it's in a different stratosphere... but only when it is good real ale, created and looked after by geeky experts. Bad real ale is infinitely worse than bad keg lager. Much better to drink indifferent lager than bad real ale - likewise indifferent chips are vastly preferable over rubbish sweet potato fries (which are hard to do well... but so worth it).

Whoseagooddoggiethen · 03/09/2019 22:23

Love them! Crispy sweet and salty yumminess. Around years where i am in Dublin.

Sunshinelollipops1 · 03/09/2019 22:27

OP I agree revolting things trying to pass themselves off as chips. They are like turnips - cattle food.

PinkBuffalo · 03/09/2019 22:30

I don't like sweet potato either OP and also normal potatoes aren't bad for you! As far as I'm aware they don't have fat and are actually slightly lower cals than sweet potato!
But I don't like a lot of popular things. I hate the peanut butter craze (can only have that on toast) and salted caramel is horrible, but for some reason is in everything! What's wrong with just caramel? So much stuff now I can't eat!

Miljah · 03/09/2019 23:45

The reality is, in my opinion, that potato chips are delicious.

However, they are 'carb central'. Modern, new, peer reviewed research tells us that carbs are the enemy, not fat.

It's up to you whether your anger, and ultimate health- in supporting potato fries against 'not nice' veg fries - is justified.

HeronLanyon · 03/09/2019 23:48

I agree op - absolutely loathe sweet potatoes in all forms but think fries and/or wedges are the very worst. Too rich and sweet and sickly. Oh and also sweet p crisps are shocking.

Mummadeeze · 03/09/2019 23:51

I like them so much more than regular chips, probably because I have a sweet tooth :)

Likethebattle · 03/09/2019 23:52

IT’S NOT AN UPGRADE!

busybarbara · 04/09/2019 00:00

Because you basically get to eat something far sweeter and tastier but with as few calories as normal vegetables

Herefortheduration · 04/09/2019 00:01

Just awful. Have you tried the Birds Eye Sweet Potato Waffles abominations?!

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 04/09/2019 04:15

I loathe all root vegetables. They taste nasty to me. So SPFs are definitely out for me. So grim.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 04/09/2019 04:45

Can't even stomach them when I'm blind drunk, and ordinarily there's virtually nothing I won't eat post-session. Revolting. Nothing wrong with a standard Council potato chip/french fry/wedge.

mathanxiety · 04/09/2019 04:54

I don't really get sweet potatoes. I have them at Thanksgiving and Christmas, boiled, mashed with butter, S&P, and a little molasses and they are lovely that way. Also good is sweet potato pie (it's like pumpkin pie). I think they are too insipid to just eat as seasoned fries, but they are nice as curry chips.

Don't get the love for butternut squash either.

However, I love parsnips in all forms, and also halloumi fries.

And YY to normal chips with mayo...
