To not understand the obsession with sweet potato fries?

They are far too sweet and sickly and I just don't get why everyone seems to rave about them. Much prefer ordinary chips.

billy I'd be thrilled to find a parsnip instead of a potato

Sorrysorrysosorry · 03/09/2019 20:00

I love them. I always pay the -rip off-upgrade £1.

But then I would also choose to make a sweet baked potato over a regular jacket more often than not.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 03/09/2019 20:00

Ah! I have ONCE had sweet potato fries worth the name. And they were bloody glorious. Crisp outside soft and gooey inside with a hint of spicing to counteract the sweetness.

Never since, my home made versions have been fairly deplorable too.

So we make do with wedges of sweet potato, rubbed in oil and either slt and pepper or a spice. They are nice, far nicer than most supposed fries, but as nice as that one plateful!

Funko · 03/09/2019 20:02

I made my own for dinner and they were delicious and not too sweet.

The ones in pubs and restaurants are very very sweet as are the frozen ones. Much nicer to make yourself Smile

Chip or wedge them, 8 mins in microwave. Slight coat in coconut oil and bang in the oven to crisp.

😋

CuriousaboutSamphire · 03/09/2019 20:05

Coconut oil? ^Blech! Smile

pigeononthegate · 03/09/2019 20:09

They're never crispy. They're always wet and flaccid. If you try and crisp them up they turn rindy, bendy and wizened instead. They're sweet, grainy and slightly soapy. Bleeeeeeeeeeeee.

BillywigSting · 03/09/2019 20:10

Isn't coconut oil meant for skin/hair rather than food or is it like olive oil and good for everything?

Though the idea of coconut flavoured sweet potato fries really doesn't appeal I have to admit

Watchingthyme · 03/09/2019 20:11

Coconut oil doesn’t taste of sweet coconut!

ChippyMinton · 03/09/2019 20:13

I’d like them. Enter if they weren’t soggy.
Can they be deep fried? I might drag out the deep fat fryer if so...

ChippyMinton · 03/09/2019 20:14

Eh? I’d like them better...

PickAChew · 03/09/2019 20:14

They're always a disappointment and never crispy enough.

TwatCat · 03/09/2019 20:15

They're a bit too mushy for me, the same as sweet potato mash, too watery. I think their water content is too high personally to make good chips or mash.

Ronnie27 · 03/09/2019 20:15

They’re amazing. With cheese. You can keep your triple cooked nonsense though.

orangeshoebox · 03/09/2019 20:16

yanbu
there is nothing NOTHING wrong with ordinary potatoes

Miljah · 03/09/2019 20:17

Well, I think it all depends on whether you buy into newish, modern nutritional thinking that states that sugar is 'the enemy', not fats.

Potato is carbohydrate central. Sweet potato/kumera... not.

Suze1621 · 03/09/2019 20:18

Cooked properly they are fab - and count as one of your 5 a day too.

managedmis · 03/09/2019 20:19

Oh my god they are LUSH

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 03/09/2019 20:20

Don't care for sweet potatoes at all. Just too, well, sweet.
Proper chips only please - and fat ones, not fries. Preferably with pickled onion vinegar.

WhyBirdStop · 03/09/2019 20:21

I prefer roasted sweet potato or sweet potato wedges with something like cumin or chilli or feta (or a combination) to balance the sweetness. No different to a carrot or a parsnip in that sense

HollyGoLoudly1 · 03/09/2019 20:21

First a thread bashing halloumi fries, now this! Both delicious. Normal chips are also delicious. Mmmmm chips... with mayo.... yum....

What were we talking about again?

Drabarni · 03/09/2019 20:22

They are lovely, the only potato my dh can eat.
I object to the bloody stuff they put on them in restaurants though.
Serve them plain with an assortment/ choice of flavourings.
Consider those with several allergies.

motherofgod2 · 03/09/2019 20:23

I like the taste of sweet potato but not in its chip form. They're always soggy and stringy. I only have mashed sweet potato or use it in soup.

ChicCroissant · 03/09/2019 20:23

We have sweet potato fries most of the time now, I like them.

BillywigSting · 03/09/2019 20:25

I will defend halloumi fries to my dying breath.

Chips they most definitely are not but deep fried cheese dipped in chilli sauce is mana from heaven.

Gavel.

Gentleness · 03/09/2019 20:25

Try home made, mixed up in a little oil with smoked paprika, onion salt and sumac. Really hot oven, on a crisper tray. Thin chips are always a bit bendy but the outside is crisp. Sometimes I add a bit of flour to the mix as well, chickpea is good. The flavours balance out the sweetness well.
