Delivery Drivers?!

PennyGold · 03/09/2019 15:22

I'm genuinely asking as I'm not too sure if I'm being unreasonable.

I ordered something online and it was getting delivered today. I live on the first floor of an apartment building (with visitor parking). The delivery man buzzed the intercom and I buzz him in, and say I'm on the first floor. He then replies saying "can you come downstairs to get it".

I was in pyjamas (last day of my holiday) and cooking lunch. Is it expected to go down and get a delivery if you live in an apartment building?

Yes.

It's not going to kill you, is it?

BogglesGoggles · 03/09/2019 15:25

I would expect it to come to my door but British delivery drivers are by and large terrible so I wouldn’t be surprised if they expect you to come down.

pelirocco123 · 03/09/2019 15:25

Deliveries usually are to door step only , the drivers get paid per delivery and can be penalised if they dont do all their deliveries . Its one flight of stairs to you , but could be potentially dozens of flights to them

PennyGold · 03/09/2019 15:25

@Unshriven

No, but it's annoying have to get dressed, turn the stove off and lock up.

I might be unreasonable but I expect it to be delivered to my doorstep when I order "doorstep delivery".

The answer next time will be - yes, but i’ll need to get dressed/put shoes on so it will be much quicker if you bring it up to me..

adaline · 03/09/2019 15:28

Doorstep in delivery terms means the door to the building, not your door within the building.

JamOnTheCarpet · 03/09/2019 15:28

I'd expect delivery to my actual door.
I work doing deliveries and always take it to the person's door unless there's a reception area that takes post/parcels.

CAK111512 · 03/09/2019 15:31

Absolutely you should go down. It’s your parcel.

A lot of delivery drivers may bring it up but why should they?

earlydoors42 · 03/09/2019 15:31

I used to live in a flat and would prefer to run down to the main door myself than let someone into my building and right to the door of my flat. Just feel safer.

SciFiRules · 03/09/2019 15:32

Would you object to paying more for your delivery because you are in a flat?

PennyGold · 03/09/2019 15:37

@SciFiRules I'd happily pay more if it was a large item (washer etc) but this wasn't.. by that statement should people in a house with a long garden pay more for delivery?

It's more the inconvenience of not knowing when it's coming so therefore having the be "up and ready" to run down for a parcel between 8 and 5.

I guess that's the downside to living in an apartment. I usually get them delivered to an "Amazon pickup location" but this wasn't from Amazon and no other option that to deliver it to address.

malmi · 03/09/2019 15:39

Does the regular post come through your door or do your have to collect it from downstairs?

frsttimemama · 03/09/2019 15:39

If they do bring it up, it is as a gesture.

If it were me, I would bring it up but, you will find a lot of delivery drivers hate their job and they have a certain amount of 'drops' to get in so, if it's not in their job description, they won't be doing it.

If a driver is a subcontractor for the delivery company, they might get paid per drop and so, it isn't in their best interest to waste time on a single drop. On the other hand, if the driver is employed and paid an hourly wage, they may be more inclined to stick around and get a bit of overtime in. (They also, may get penalised for being late or not making all of their drops)

Don't get me wrong, some drivers would just do it without being a dick. But, unfortunately, they aren't duty bound to do so.

PennyGold · 03/09/2019 15:40

@underneaththeash I probably should have done that, and will in the future give them the option and let them decide what they'd prefer. Thank you.

To everyone saying she should go downstairs... If the delivery agent phoned you from the end of the street and told you to come and get your parcel, would you? After all, "it's your parcel".

Apples and oranges. The road is not your home. Delivery drivers should deliver "to your door" - when you live in a flat, that means the door to the building. The end of the road isn't comparable in any way!

malmi · 03/09/2019 15:45

The communal area of a block of flats isn't your home.

SciFiRules · 03/09/2019 15:49

I live a long way from the road and have steps. It's not so unusual for me to be called to the road for collection. When we moved here it's one of the things I accepted. From a delivery drivers perspective I can really understand not wanting to go up and down stairs.

HariboLecter · 03/09/2019 15:50

I'd have just gone down in my pyjamas, or chucked a dressing gown on Blush

frsttimemama · 03/09/2019 15:55

There are also insurances and health and safety policies to consider for some companies.

The delivery isn't promised to be made to your home, it is to be made to the address.

If they have delivered to the address and you ask them to take the parcel upstairs to your home, it may be their companies H&S policy that they are not to do so. It may also be that, if they had an accident taking the parcel upstairs, they wouldn't be covered by the insurance because, they were supposed to deliver to the door of the address and therefore, that would be beyond their call of duty.

There are all sorts of reasons why they may have said no. The main one being that they maybe just purely couldn't be arsed. However, I agree that in future, you should see if they would rather wait for you to get sorted and come down or, just come upstairs.

maddy68 · 03/09/2019 15:59

They have to do x amount of drops per day. They can't afford the time to bring things up to you

crazylady7 · 03/09/2019 16:00

Do you get your normal post through your door or do you have to go downstairs to get it? If there is no where to leave your parcel then id say yanbu, as the postman does it, then so should he. But if you have your own boxes downstairs to collect from then i wouldnt expect the delivery man to go up to your door.

zxcvhjkl · 03/09/2019 16:05

I live in a block of flats. My front door is my front door to my individual flat, not the door into the communal area which leads into the flats. Never once has someone not delivered to my actual front door.

YANBU. The driver is just being lazy and cheeky.

Having said that, the exception would be a kerbside delivery for large orders, but that is always clearly stated.

As for the PP who said the driver has alot of deliveries to make, how is that the customers fault?! The customer has paid for a delivery and service and should receive the delivery to their front door.

Lauren83 · 03/09/2019 16:16

I would expect to go and meet him at the door for it
